Peter Andren was perhaps the most decent, honest and courageous politician that Australia has ever had. His passionate commitment to his principles even at the risk of an electoral backlash is something we need much more of in Australian politics. I remember how he stood up and opposed the Tampa legislation and the persecution of asylum seekers in 2001 even though he knew that the Howard government's policies on the issue would be popular in his electorate.
Rest in peace Mr Andren. You were a good man and my thoughts, prayers, condolences and deepest sympathies go out to your family and friends. We need many, many more like you in politics. It would make the world a better place
