The Liberals must purge the reactionaries
Keating nails it.

"ON SATURDAY night, when it was clear the Howard government had been defeated, many Labor supporters around me said: "You must be so happy." But my emotion was not happiness, rather; it was relief.

Relief that the nation had put itself back on course. Relief that the toxicity of the Liberal social agenda, the active disparagement of particular classes and groups, that feeling of alienation in your own country, was over. And over in the only way that could be final: with a resounding electoral instruction of "no more".

In the Sydney Sun Herald last Sunday, John Howard nominated the putting asunder of political correctness and the celebration of our Anglo-Celtic past as the pinnacle of his social, indeed national, achievement.

In making the claim, he was nominating as a virtue political incorrectness of a kind that gave some the right to speak and behave towards others in terms disparaging of their colour, religion, class or social standing.

In a country of immigrants, such a view emanating from the prime minister is social poison."

1. He sounds even worse than Maggie Thatcher!!!
and that's saying plenty.

I'm glad that he has been thrown out, and hope the new government will reverse the nastier policies.

3. He was a nasty little man in every way.
In every election he fought as leader, he appealed only to the worst instincts in people - racism,
fear, greed, and selfishness.

He never had a big vision for the country, and that's where Rudd got him in the end - Rudd outlined
his positive view of where we should be going, and all Howard could do was go back to the past.

2. I'm glad to see Paul go back on the front foot.
The line in that interview that I really liked was when he said that
Costello has just spent the last ten years in a hammock.
Then he articulately (for Paul) explained why.
Buried the bastard.
Remember the "8 billion dollar black hole" bullshit that Costello used to bang on about?
I can sense that Wayne Swan will find an even bigger one and shove it up
Costello's arse. I'm eager for that smackdown.

4. Was a great interview on Radio National
Happened to tune in to Radio National when Keating was interviewed on Monday. Said the same sort of thing. They probably have it archived - worth a listen if you have missed hearing the man (as I have! I became the political junkie I am now by watching parliamentary sessions on my non-uni days and just being fascinated and entertained by Keating as he berated the opposition! He had his flaws, but he really has the gift of the gab - very different from Rudd, who is about as interesting as a bowl of plain oatmeal!)

5. His description of Costello earlier this year turned out to be spot on:
"All tip and no iceberg".
