Blind doctor fights to stay in Australia
"A Kenyan-born academic specialising in disabilities is having trouble staying in Australia - and he says it is due to his blindness.

Dr Siyat Abdi, who has been living and studying in Adelaide for five years, entered Australia on a postgraduate study visa which expires this month."

"The Kenyan was invited to complete disability studies in America five years ago but he chose Australia instead.

"Flinders University professor Brian Matthews says Dr Abdi was an outstanding student.

"He completed his PhD in a quicker time than any other PhD student I've known, and most of those, you know, are not blind," he said."

I feel as if I've gone to sleep for a long time and woken up to find that John Howard has been elected again.

This man is clearly not going to be a drain on the community; far from it, he has a great deal to contribute. That
is what should determine his right to stay, in a just society.

I despair. Bureaucracy never changes, no matter who's in power.
