Man ignores teen's rape in flowerbed

Police are searching for a man who appears to have ignored a teenager's cries for help as she was being raped in a flowerbed near a Parramatta church.

The 15-year-old girl was walking alone through Church Street Mall at Parramatta, in Sydney's west, shortly after 2am (AEST) on Sunday when she was approached by two strangers. Police have described them as being of African appearance.

Detective Superintendent Maria Rustja said the girl had been at a function with friends but had decided to meet up with another group of people. "She was walking back through Church Street Mall on her own, when she was approached by the two men," she told reporters on Tuesday.

"The males then pulled her into a garden bed, adjacent to St John's church, on Church Street Mall, where she was indecently assaulted."

The girl called out for help when a man walked past but he didn't respond, said Det Super Rustja. "While there is no legal obligation to render assistance, certainly there is a moral one," she said.

I can understand it. Two weeks ago in Melbourne, a 40 year old woman was stabbed (and subsequently died) when she confronted a group of youths who had "egged" her house. A stupid prank resulted in this mother of three dying. A 14 year old kid has been charged with manslaughter.

People are just too scared to intervene in these situations lest they become victims themselves.

I'd like to think that I would go to the aid of someone being assaulted, but there's always going to be that "what if..." factor.

Look at the title of the article and the first few lines; to me, it appears as if they are accusing him of something, though further in the article it says he did nothing illegal. This article strikes me as very odd.

If the guy had intervened, most likely he would be in jail and the rapist would be walking around. Look around at videos from some other countries. These guys can go up to you and slap you in the mouth and there is nothing you can do about it without getting arrested yourself. Cultural understanding and all that.

He might have been deaf and not heard her no matter how loud.
He might not have understood her cries for help.
He might have been elderly or infirm and did not want to die at the hands of two obvious animals.
