right, though there is the "Her-o-shim-ma" over "Hee-row-shee-ma" issue, but that's relatively minor--and besides, Japanese isn't nearly as close to my heart as Chinese is.

Anyway, last summer between my Freshman and Sophomore year, I spent three months kicking around Beijing doing odd jobs (mostly as an English tutor for nouveau-riche families) and staying in hostels. It was pretty awesome. That's the thing about China. Especially in the less cosmopolitan areas, you make even the remotest stab at Chinese (and I consider myself damn competent, by the way) and half the people act like the Voice of God Himself came out of your mouth.
