I think I want to cry---this is such great news. It is going to be one hell of a war with Shrub and the Repugs, but John is absolutely ready. I can't help but think he has something absolute. He fights to win.

He has been fighting this war ever since Vietnam. It truly has been like "Going Up River." It really is ". . . The Long War of John Kerry." First Vietnam, then his activism in the anti-Vietnam war movement and battling Nixon and his henchmen, then working as a successful prosecuting attorney, then as a freshman Senator and his investigation into the CIA-Contra-Cocaine connection battling the Reagan/Bush administration and suffering being called a conspiracy theorist (read Robert Parry's article "Kerry's Contra-Cocaine Chapter" http://www.consortiumnews.com/2004/102904.html ) even though all of it has been proven true since and admitted to by the CIA. Kerry went on to investigate and bring down BCCI, the Terrorists Bank, to the dismay of many in congress, a bank which also has a link to the Bush crime family. Now he faces off with the Bush crime family once again. This time over an election that was stolen from Kerry using all possible immoral manners and computer fraud. I never have doubted he was hard at work behind the scenes. He told us in his video on his website. Good things come to those who wait.

Today, it's going to be a sunny day in San Diego for me no matter what the weather is doing . This roller coaster ride has been taxing, but I'm feeling elevated again. Thanks William for posting this tease, it helps.

By the way, I really enjoyed reading "Tour of Duty," especially the chapter on John Kerry's time here in San Diego training at Coronado Island, and living off base and surfing in Mission Beach. It's a great read if you haven't read it; you'll come to understand his honest character and perseverance. John Kerry is inspiring.

504. Tour of Duty was a great book...

...and right before the DNC last summer, I visited San Diego for two weeks, and had a brilliant time. I took the ferry out to Coronado and rode my bike all over the island, and to the Hotel Del Coronado, which is beautiful. There was a HUGE battleship docked on the San Diego side. Actually, it was an aircraft carrier, I had never seen anything so massive. I was in awe. A few months ago I bought and read Tour of Duty, and yes, could totally envision Kerry on Coronado, since I had just been there...San Diego seems like a great place to live.

I spent a little too much money at those huge malls, though. :-)

It would have been SO much better for him to contest the election immediately, without having ANY proof, and have the right wing media tear him to pieces bit by bit. Although you seem to be doing their job for them.

I have been responsible for leading demonstrations at our state capital in Nashville for the past two weeks. Each time, over 100 people have shown up to protest the election theft and we have received coverage on our CBS TV affiliate (on air and on their web-site), our NPR station, a Tennessee-specific news web-site and (this past Monday) in our newspaper (in print and on their web-site). And yet, everyone keeps saying to us, "Well, if what you say is true, why isn't John Kerry saying anything? And why isn't the media covering this?" You and I know that the two questions are linked -- if you spoke up, the media would have to cover this theft. And yet your silence leaves the rest of us puzzled and vulnerable.

I still have a bumper sticker on my truck that reads "Help is on the way." So I have three questions:

1) Was that just empty rhetoric?
2) If not, do you intend to stand with the rest of us and lead this fight to save our democracy?
3) If so, when?

I keep being told that you were a good prosecutor and will step forward when the time is right. Well, if that time is coming before 2008, you need to let the rest of us in on it. Give me some sign -- any sign -- that we need to keep fighting to expose this coup and rally support here in Tennessee and we'll keep working hard. But if I don't hear anything at all back from you, we'll stop now. We don't want to stop. I have more than a hundred people wanting to meet on January 2 to plan our next steps. But we can't go on risking our own sanity, pocketbooks and necks without someone, and some cause, to fight for.

Give me some sign and we'll keep pushing. But if I hear nothing back from you, then we'll forget about it. And give up the country to the Republican Nazis, forever. The ball's in your court.

I did not watch "Going Upriver" before the election, but have watched it 4 times over the past weeks. It is awesome. The one thing I wish were true is that it contained Kerry's entire speech to the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee. "Upriver" doesn't include the part of the speech in which Kerry mentions war profits. Each time I have watched it I play the final scene over and over again -- the only scene in which we hear John Kerry at his current age. In it he is flying in a copter over Vietnam and saying that we still haven't learnt all of the lessons of Vietnam. Which lessons? International relations? Allowing companies that abuse their power to run our government? Which lessons?

I am guessing that tomorrow will be a small step -- a team of Kerry lawyers showing up at court in Ohio, instead of just McTigue. If this bums anyone out, I am just thinking this aloud, because if I keep my hopes in check I won't crash tomorrow. There've been lots of ups and downs in the past few days...

Recount is now over in Ohio. Kerry got less than 500 extra votes. Speaking as an attorney, there's really nothing that Kerry can do at this point. Arnebeck's suit will likely be thrown out Friday. But, with the holidays I don't know what the court's hours are. Prosecutors office here is closed Friday and Monday. We'll see.

I have often felt as you do about Kerry but I am a small retailer...
After the 2000 election all sales were paralyzed, restraunts were empty, everyone was glued to their TV"s. Same with the last quarter of 9/11. The other Shrub years were pretty weak and sales are way down again this year.
I both wanted immediate outrage and feared the loss of my business because of it. I have to say that I am grateful that the Kerry kick in is (hopefully) happening now.
With the state of our economy I bet many folks are grateful! This may have been part of the plan if Kerry was looking at a hurting economy as a factor. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt. My personal deadline is January for him to come through.

Here is my letter sent several weeks ago:

Dear Mr. Okrent,

After what happened in Florida in 2000, we all know that this country has a deeply flawed election process.  We desperately need centralized standards and we desperately need non-partisan oversight at the federal level.  This is something that deeply concerns every U.S. citizen, regardless of political affiliation.

Since November 2, evidence is mounting that our deeply flawed election process - which is basically a free-for-all at the precinct level - may (worst case scenario) have delivered us the wrong president for another four years!  

The Democratic side of the House Judiciary Committee, under the leadership of Rep. John Conyers, held hearings last week to investigate what appear to be massive and widespread voting problems in Ohio.

Why does a newspaper like the New York Times completely ignore these hearings?  Would it have been newsworthy if a few Republicans had been involved?  I would appreciate some insight into this, since it is really confusing,

He pretty much predicted the whole thing. So in the months before the election, I had had this sinking feeling the whole time. I was depressed and afraid. And I really had no one to talk to about it. I emailed MoveOn and everyone I knew and tried to get them to contact their congress people about the legislation designed to protect us against exactly what happened with the voting machines and tabulators, legislation that had been sitting in congress for over a year, blocked by Delay in the House from even getting a hearing! H.R. 2239 or S. 1980 And nothing...no one seemed to get it. No one to talk to about it who got it. And I keep finding more sites like verified voting and black box voting...and I was getting more and more paranoid.

I worked my butt off for Kerry anyway, hoping we'd have enough of a margin to compensate, but didn't realize that it didn't matter how much we had because they'd make sure they had more. And the whole time I'm realizing the implications. If they have the elections, they have everything. I found an article that said no way we could win; they already had it fixed and the media wouldn't report it and no one would know because of that.

So there I was on election night with my friends watching, and I'm saying, "They did it again! They stole another one! It's the tabulators. I knew they were going to steal it..." And they're all looking at me like I'm weird...so the next day I am online searching, searching, and within days Thom Hartman and Greg Palast are coming through so I'm not feeling so nuts...
then thank God for DU.

And now I am on the steering committees for two groups who are working on this, and we are connecting with other groups all over the state and even out of state. I am obsessed. I have been obsessed for five months now...I keep having this feeling of what it must have been like in Germany during Hitler's rise to power for those who could see the writing on the wall and those around them couldn't. Thank God for the internet. It is ironic that the very electronic technology that they used to rig the election is what allows us to communicate and form a movement to fight back.

I knew, after reading JK's biography, and his and John Edwards' book, that he would not let this go unchallenged. But if he had played his hand too early, without good evidence, he would have been bulldozed by the Red Machine...
The MSM blackout which has so infuriated us has worked in JK's favor because he has not had to do interviews and press conferences, etc.
And by waiting, he allowed B* and Roveco to get a little complacent, and maybe a little sloppy. I'm willing to cut the man some slack. He was in an extremely dicey and dangerous position on Nov. 3, and has been ever since. If he has read everything we've read, he now knows that he won, possibly by a landslide (and he could well have more evidence than we do--although the publicly available evidence is overwhelming, in my opinion--don't need no "smoking gun" when you have "redshifts" like that in every kind of data you look at, whether Exit Polls vs. "official results," or paper vs. electronic, or top of the ticket vs. lower ticket, or touchscreens changing Kerry votes to Bush votes--jeez, could it be any clearer? Then add in Ohio...)

I know his concession has no legal force, but it does have quite huge political and P.R. force. In fact, it convinced most of those who voted for him that he had lost in a fair and square election, and there has been little or nothing in the news media to disabuse them of that notion.

Latest opinion poll says only about 20% think the election was rigged. Although Bush's approval numbers are in the toilet (49%! --that's miserable), and a fat 57% disapprove of his war--quite remarkable numbers--that 20% on the rigged election means an uphill battle on P.R. I do think, though, that the majority that has been deprived of their rightful president WILL rally, once they know. But they are going to have to be hit with lightning, or something. It needs to be a startling announcement--and I think an un-concession would do it.

To get the media attention that is needed, to rally the public and the other Democrats, and to put the Republicans in Congress on notice (that he is not going to take their usual crap on this matter), he needs to SAY that he thinks he won, and that he is going to challenge this election.

If he just continues to say that "every vote should be counted" and that he supports the Ohio efforts--but does so in a more public way (a press conference? joining the Arnebeck lawsuit?)--I don't think that will be enough to rally the support he needs.

He might want to save an unconcession announcement for the last minute (the rattlesnake strategy), but, given the Iron Curtain over election fraud news, the public's almost total ignorance of what is going on, and the apparent glue-brained condition of many in the Democratic leadership, I think he has to strike now, and hard.

And I hope that's what's coming up. But I am content to wait until Jan. 6 to make any judgment of Kerry.

Personally, I think that he MUST fight this. History is calling upon him to do so. This is not just the life or death of the Democratic Party, or one man's career. This the life or death of American democracy. This is it. And, although history--and all of us--are asking a lot of him (he has far more at risk, and will be in a lot more danger, than any of us), it is not often that circumstances give a decent, courageous and intelligent man like Kerry the opportunity to pull his country back from disaster and self-destruction.

History is replete with countries and empires that went over the cliff, and descended into violence, repression, chaos and barbarism. THIS one--probably because of how it started, its revolutionary foundation in ideas, such as freedom of speech, freedom of religion and the consent of the people--has a chance to NOT go that way, to stop, to assess, and even to undo some of the damage that has been done.

Kerry has this rare opportunity, given to few men. In short, the Great Spirit is calling upon him. Will he answer? Can he?

Although we and others will fight the good fight without him, if we have to, he is in a position to considerably improve the odds in our favor. That is the magic of the candidate himself crying foul.

We might even win the fight for our democracy without him. I have a lot of faith in us--in the people who have experienced a political awakening through all this, and all who have maintained their faith in our country and its principles.

I also have a lot of faith in the American people as a whole. In fact, their repudiation of Bush Inc. in this election is THE most beautiful thing I have seen in my country since the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, and it was even more remarkable than that in some ways (folks being able to see through the Bush B.S., despite the putrid state of the U.S. news media--back in the '60s we had a Fourth Estate; we no longer do).

All the more tragic, Bush stealing the election. All those rebellious voters--people coming out of the woodwork to vote, people standing in 10 hour lines to vote, people arriving from their hospital beds to vote, elderly people fainting in the long lines, thousands of volunteers doing GOTV, people so determined (I've never seen anything like it, except in other countries, like South Africa, where they were getting to vote for the first time)--all those wonderful Americans, and they didn't get to experience the joy of victory and the satisfaction of having done their duty.

So, I think we can do it alone--that is, without Kerry leading us. But it will take us longer, much longer, and there will be much grief to bear, more death in Iraq, more economic hardship, and who knows what else?

No one can predict what will happen, even if Kerry takes the lead. But whether we are able to oust Bush soon, or not, the greatest thing will be having all Kerry voters--the majority!--with us. They will be so happy!

They all know something is wrong. The feeling is palpable. Frankly, if Kerry stands up and fights, I think the whole country is going to burst into tears--and the dark cloud will start to lift.
