At his traditional year-end news conference, Putin emphasized Russia's good relations with the United States but questioned U.S. and European support for a Ukrainian Supreme Court decision overturning the results of the recent Ukrainian vote because of what the court deemed to be widespread fraud. The winner of that election was supported by Moscow, while the loser had advocated closer ties with Europe and the United States. A new election is to be held Sunday.

"Do you think that the electoral system in the United States is without flaws?" Putin said. "Need I remind you of how their elections were held in the United States?"

Putin compared the Ukrainian case to charges of voter fraud in Afghanistan (news - web sites) in the presidential election in October, when Hamid Karzai, the U.S.-backed candidate, was elected in that country's first free presidential ballot. But U.S. and European Union monitors said Ukraine ballot fraud was far reaching, while Afghan irregularities were considered relatively minor.

But in the wake of the Bush dictatorship's coup of 2000 and the corruption-ridden "election" of 2004, the chickens have again come home to roost in America. to take articles of Pravda with grain of salt, though aside from theories that were presented, article seemed to be mostly spot on what has been said in this forum many times over.

(I suppose this previous paragraph can be interpreted so that Pravda isn´t wholly in line with Kremlin, which preferred Janukovitsh to win - unlike Fox that is almost comically compliant with the current line of US administration)

unfortunately, I think most people still believe the US press is "free" and would most certainly inform them if actual information pointing to fraud had been found.

at least, that's what I get from a lot of my neighbors.

12. I think it's three things.

People don't know. The media has said virtually nothing. Most people watch the local network 6 or 11 o'clock news, or read the local paper (if they even do that!). Election fraud hasn't been touched, so how would they know?
Also, I think many have so much confidence in the country and its leaders. The "it can't happen here" syndrome. This is America!
Finally, there is a lot of apathy. So many people are so darn busy just trying to make ends meet, they don't have the time, energy or interest to get involved.
It's truly sad, though, that this is happening, and happened in 2000. I guess we just can't give up trying to inform, enlighten, and stir up the interest in the general public. Somebody has to do it. I guess that would be us! I know I've made a difference, even if it is a small one, just by talking to people, sending out information, and encouraging others to be more aware.

14. I will have to agree with you,

while I am foreign right winger and as such don´t hold as much personal interest in this fraud issue as you, concerning mainstream media in US, they have only reported issues that have been solved.

I especially remember the partial recount done by Herald in Florida which showed that "no fraud took place" (later quoted by all major agencies) though multiplied with the states population would have given 30,000 something votes for Kerry (which was not said), or the infamous "Ohio cleared from fraud charges" when there were million other things out of place there.

It seems they have forgotten that free press should be asking questions, not selectively pick up isolated issues to "prove" that there wasn´t any fraud.

As for apathy, it is kind of scary that liberty can be so easily taken away when you have full stomach and are "safe". Maybe it shouldn't be surprise to anyone who is familiar with Maslow though and if he is correct, I would think it is next to impossible to get people there interested or enlightened.
