Republicans on Monday laid the groundwork to contest the gubernatorial election, airing a litany of allegations and concerns over the way the election and its three counts were administered, particularly in King County.
They also continued pushing other counties to add more ballots. Though four county canvassing boards will have convened by the end of today – it appears most will refuse to revisit their results.

Democrat Christine Gregoire, who lost the first two vote counts to Republican Dino Rossi, won the third count last week by 130 votes out of more than 2.8 million.

That left Republicans with few options, the most likely of which appears to be a rare election contest, which could invalidate the election and force a new one.

When Gregoire was behind and pushing for a recount, the media hardly noticed.

Now Rossi is behind, and the media is ALL OVER IT, screaming "fraud" and "re-vote".

During Gregoire's drive to have all legal votes counted the media portrayed her efforts as a waste of time for the state and somehow dishonorable. She was the "sore loser".

Now the media is picking up on the right wing talking points.

Yesterday, KOMO reported "lax security" around recount ballots in King County. The evidence? Videotape of an unlocked storage room at election HQ (ballots were being removed for counting). The funny thing is a Sheriff's Deputy was standing two feet away guarding the door.

I had to laugh thinking about all those ballots in Ohio being loaded onto the Bush/Cheney truck for "tabulation".

15. Sorry - Most Media is NOT Conservative

I have to disagree that the media is "conservative". With the exception of Fox, most of the media supports our causes and covers our issues very well. And I do remember reading lots of media stories about the Washington recount throughout the entire process. Even Fox has been more favorable to us the last few months. I don't like everything I see in the media, but honestly I cannot accuse them of being overly conservative.

Also, I think we must be fair about all these recounts, court challenges, etc. If we all think it OK to challenge in OH, then the repukes have the right to challenge on WA or wherever. The court election "genie" got out of the box in 2000, and will be with us for all future elections now. Sometimes the courts will work for us, and sometimes against. Now they are just part of the process.

If the repukes get a revote in WA, then we should get a national one.

It ranges from moderate on the right side to flamin' socialist on the left.

Most of the really big outlets are left-leaning.

Take careful notes of every legal maneuver they are using, every bit of "evidence" they believe bolsters their case, etc.

And then take each item and use it against them in Ohio and elsewhere.

This could be a win-win for us.

A new election for the states of Ohio and Florida, I would prefer the whole country, but this is looking interesting though we must be careful that Repubs do not steal the Governor election as well.

I can hear Rove drafting it now...and if they do not shut up, then it is time to fling the same "sore loserman" stuff right back at them.

Remember...if it is good for the goose...that is why Rove will send the "shudda you mouth" telegram SOON to Rossi and his gang. Watch and see how quick this disappears.

10. Sour Grapes

This should be perceived as sour grapes by the public. I hope that the GOP does make a big deal about it. They will not get the courts to order a new election and the Washington State legislature is controlled

Talmadge Heflin is doing something similar in Houston in asking the Texas legislature to order a new election. Normally a new election at the order of the Texas Legislature backfires because of the sore lose/sour grapes image. One democratic leader who I talked to thinks that a new election would drive a wedge between the Texas GOP and the Vietnamese community

We can use both of these incidents against the GOP.

Right now, the best that Heflin can hope for is a new election. The candidate who loses the first election normally does not win the re-election because of the sour grapes type. In this case, the Vietnamese community is already upset about the recount and contest and a new election would really drive a wedge between the GOP and this growing block of voters. I have heard that the GOP have given Heflin's office away and that the Texas Speaker was working to get Heflin to accept the will of the voters because a new election would hurt the GOP.
