My Letter-but I'm Grammatically Confused

here is my letter to the senators, however Ive gotten myself grammatically confused. Is senator always capitalized, I don't think so. And the term president-I thought only cap. when refer directly to the president? No? Oy vay. But I think the letter is good...

Dear United States Senators of the Democratic Party:


My name is ****** and I am a 25 year old Democratic activist in *** and I have written to you in the past weeks over the very troubling events which occurred this past election. Now with the breaking developments that Rep. Conyers, ranking member of the Judiciary Committee, will contest Ohio's vote this Jan 6 I hope you will treat the situation with the great seriousness and gravity that it deserves. Conyers is to be issuing a report of all the episodes of disenfranchisement, fraud and other very disturbing items that occurred in Ohio in very short order.

This president is a man you all have bravely fought. He has been untruthful to the America on the subject of war. He has been untruthful to the Congress on his Medicare bill. I urge you not to trust this president, including on the issue of this past federal election.

Your former Senate Minority Leader, Tom Daschle, was targeted by Bush's friend Senator Bill Frist. Daschle, a good man who served his nation with honor, was ousted in a shocking display of bitter partisan arrogance. In 2002 the GOP took out Georgia Senator Max Cleland. What was the issue they used? His supposed failure to protect this country, despite the fact he lost three limbs in Vietnam. Now this president has breached the boundaries of democracy by outright corrupting it.

Rep. Conyers, after weeks of exhaustive investigations now feels that the electors of the state of Ohio are tainted and thus the election of Bush was not fair, nor honest, nor open. These are high crimes.

Sirs and Madams, the Republicans tried to oust President Bill Clinton over a sexual affair. The treasures of this nation were spent on a multi-year hunting of the President. All of you said senators voted against the removal of President Clinton. You know the GOP for what it is.

One hopes that this current president, who has habitually told great untruths to his people, who has openly embraced naked partisanship in a time of war, who has violated the common decency of the Congress by targeting Democratic leadership members and has now violated our sacred democracy with outright suppression of African-Americans in Ohio will be forced to face the terrible events of this past election. I urge you to stand with Representative Conyers and others on January 6th.

It was Dr. King who stated that “‘Cowardice asks the question: Is it safe? Expediency asks the question: Is it politic? Vanity asks the question: Is it popular? But conscience asks this question: Is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular -- but one must take it simply because it is right.’” That is the question I believe which must be asked now.

One additional note—President George W. Bush, Karl Rove, and other members of the GOP are supposed to give depositions in Ohio as part of the investigation there. Of course they have never done so. It appears there is only one remedy left: the contestation of the vote in the Congress. One hopes that you shall rise with Rep. Conyers and other members of Congress to formally contest the election of 2004. Please see addendum below with much information so one can see, hear, feel, and read about what occurred this past election.

Good letter. A little wordy in some places, but grammatically correct. BTW, you might add a final paragraph that clearly states what you are asking the senators to do.

3. I think your letter is great.

As to whether or not to capitalize "senator" every time? Might as well. I think their vanity would make them enjoy that, whether or not it were necessary. When you address them as "Sirs and Madams", why not say, "Senators" instead?

But regardless of whether you agree with those small changes, your letter is great just as it is.

5. Good letter! A few thoughts--

I believe that Senator is always capitalized, as is President, when you are referring to POTUS. Something like "the president of the company" would not be. That's just my two cents.

Do you really agree that the Senators have *all* "bravely fought" this President? I think that some of them think of themselves as kind of bipartisan. IMO I'd rag less on the Republicans and the pResident and go into more details on the specifics of the voter suppression in Ohio, (because that's why they should stand up -- citizens were disenfranchised, that's the main point, who and how are secondary) .... but that's just my two cents -- YMMV, obviously, it's your letter! :D
