Do you think most Americans even know what happened today?

The protest got about a total of 3 minutes tonight on all three major networks. You know it is to be buried deep in tomorrow's newspapers and not on the first page; that means not many people will read it. It's not placed prominent on many news websites, and cable news hasn't played it too much (not counting FOX, where I'm sure it makes us look bad).

Are we living in a bubble that no one knows about? Does this matter if no one ever hears about it?

I made a point of turning the various televisions at work to C-SPAN today, without any announcement, just as the sessions started. One person asked me why I changed it, so I told him, to which he said "Oh."

At the end of the day, I made some comment meant to initiate a conversation if anyone had paid any attention. I eventually just had to blurt out what had gone on today, and everyone, all 11 of them, had no clue whatsoever.

The people at work represent a pretty good cross-section of American society overall, meaning they are actually a bit more diverse than the local society. I figure 1 in 11 is about right.

17. Nightline and Newspapers

I'm waiting to see what Nightline will do tonight. It's one of the few news programs that I regularly watch, and I think they're better than much of the SCLM. If they don't cover it within the next few days, I think things will lie low until the next major development.

I caught the last-minute roundup on PBS' News Hour, and it didn't seem as though they discussed it either. Does anyone know if today's events were discussed?

I'm looking forward to tomorrow's newspaper coverage, but I expect it to be relatively minor aside from the Washington Post, New York Times, and the like. The electoral challenge will probably end up on page A12 of most papers, or in the tiny news tidbits! As you noted, I'm not sure that most Americans seriously read newspapers anymore, for that matter.

We might be in a bubble. I'm currently in Washington, and the people I encountered this afternoon weren't even aware of the possible impending challenge--even though they're often online! When I'm more optimistic, I do think it DOES matter, for both the short and the long term. (For more on this, see my reply to "History Books and Graduate Students.")

If memory serves, I actually got into DU at some point during the televised debates last fall. Your community was a big help in the aftermath of Bush's bizarre "victory" on Nov. 2, and I've been regularly visiting the site as a guest for the last few months. I've also recommended it to friends and acquaintances who wanted to learn more about possible vote fraud.

My emotions are a bit mixed too, and it does sometimes seem as though DUers live in a different sphere than those outside who don't pay much attention to what's occurring. (I don't mean this in a negative way.)

When I walked up Capitol Hill to the Library of Congress today, I thought the weather was an appropriate metaphor for the electoral situation. It was so foggy that you couldn't see the Capitol Dome! When I left after 5 P.M. and the Congressional challenge, the fog had lifted and you could see the brilliantly lit Dome, with flags nearby at half-staff. I'd like to think it was a hopeful sign for a democracy in distress.

In addition to the lively opinions, the various smiley faces (even if they're not smiling!) are one of the most endearing things about DU. I don't know how or where you find them, but they're great!

I saw the death of democracy. I kid you not. Conyers had the goods but
