What's the real story on the letter writing campaign? I've never heard about it before...and somehow it doesn't make sense that it would discourage voters...unless we were calling them names and enclosing spit balls.

And since Ralph Nader received 1,347 votes, we can assume Gore's margin would have been larger without Nader on the ballot. On Tuesday George Bush won Clark County by 1,620 votes.

The most significant stat here is how Clark County compares to the other 15 Ohio counties won by Gore in 2000. Kerry won every Gore county in Ohio except Clark. He even increased Gore's winning margin in 12 of the 16. Nowhere among the Gore counties did more votes move from the blue to the red column than in Clark. The Guardian's Katz was quoted as saying it would be "self-aggrandizing" to claim Operation Clark County affected the election. Don't be so modest, Ian.

As the excellent Peter Roff of UPI tells us, "Turnout in Clark County, according to unofficial data from the office of Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, was almost twice what it was in the 2000 election when Gore defeated Bush by 324 votes out of 35,644 cast. Tuesday, Bush carried Clark County by 1,620 votes, winning almost as many votes — 34,444 — as were cast for both Bush and Gore four years before."

Big problem: in 2000 there were 57,559 votes cast in Clark County, not 35,644. No idea where he got the latter number. Gore did beat Bush by 324 votes, so he got that part right at least. But his whole idea of a doubling of turnout is fantasy.

On Nov. 2, 67,595 votes were cast in the county--an increase yes, but only 17%, in keeping with turnout increases across the state.
There is absolutely nothing extraordinary about the Clark County results.

There is an amazing amount of mythologizing going on among the Bush people and their whores in the media. This guy Peter Roff bears some looking into.
