Someone threw this at me today.

Snopes: Not One Damn Dime Day

What do you think? It may not hit the corporations hard but it seems some folks are worried about it. I think it would at least make some entities notice.

1. And here's how to make it a "functional" protest

Do without. Do without on the 20th and the days before and the days after. You may not be able to do it with some things like fuel to get to work (take the bus? hop a ride from a friend?). Food--well, really, we could fast. A day long fast is not that bad.

Other things like stupid plastic garbage from big box retailers you can do without any time.

Just a thought. There is a way to make this a real protest and save some money in the long run too. From the looks of it, we are going to need every dime we save!

5. Daylong fasts are pretty easy to accomplish

It's not like a day without food will kill you. I've even done it by accident a few times in my life, as I'm sure many of us have.

As a variation, shop, but don't buy. Just browse merchandise. With a lot of friends. Go to an expensive electronics store with ten other people and just look around until they throw you out. Rinse. Repeat.

Standard answer to the store clerks: "I'd really love to buy this (expensiveelectronictoyhere) but, in this Bush* economy, I just can't afford it...."

8. I'll be in New Orleans for the Inauguration protest

those of us who will be staying in hotels can't avoid spending, unfortunately...but I will try to limit what I buy, and keep it to food and beverages.

There for Mardi Gras? You could do what kgfnally suggested and browse or hang out in the bars and don't order anything, talk about how you came on vacation, but because of the Shrub economy, you don't have any money to spend.

10. Mardi Gras isnt until Feb 8th this year. Thank God.

I love N.O. but prefer the "real" New Orleans, without the crowds.

There is a huge protest there next Thursday, the Death of Democracy, Jazz funeral and wake. I WILL be ordering breakfast and dinner, and don't see how I can go through this experience without a beer or 2 ;) , but will buy from only small, locally-owned businesses, no chains, and promise not to buy any souvenirs or anything else that day!!

BTW...weather report from the great white north: An inch of RAIN with THUNDER yesterday (in January?!?) and 40 degrees. TOnight, low will be 4 below zero, and high tomorrow of 7 degrees....Oh Baby, am I ready to roll out of here! :)

4. Maybe it won't do a thing... but neither did all those protests before

the Iraq war. The war happened anyway.

But that's not really the point of these kinds of protests. OBVIOUSLY it would be great if they worked, but even if they don't, they rally people together and focus them on opposing the administration.

It's better than nothing!

Anyway, every fricking nickel I can withhold from a Red company is a victory for me.

11. If my apathetic family/friends can email back to me 5 times, then

this is getting around. I've been paying attention to the forwards on these emails. It's getting around and it's easy for those who can't get off their butts to "chain themselves..." to make a statement.

Edit to add: In fact my aunt sent it to me on the original round! Which made me so happy that it wasn't me this time "X-filing"...

12. Snopes may be correct, but that doesn't matter

Is Snopes implying that anyone who participates in the boycott really thinks that it will end the war? Of course not, it's simply an act of protest.

Stick to rumors and urban legends Snopes, leave the political commentary for the paid whores.

In fact, it should be a PERMANENT change in spending behavior.

The problem with the one-day approach is everyone will stock up ahead of time on what they would have bought Jan. 20th. So what's the point?
