What got so many counties to shift from blue to red?

By Jill Lawrence and Susan Page, USA TODAY

When President Bush delivers his State of the Union address Wednesday, he'll survey a Capitol Hill landscape that reflects the heartland he won on Election Day. (Chat: USA TODAY's Susan Page, Tuesday, 11 a.m.)

He says his victory vindicates his decision to go to war with Iraq and gives him a mandate for his domestic plans, topped by transforming part of Social Security into private or personal investment accounts.

But that's not what drew voters to Bush in four counties that tipped Republican last year. In dozens of interviews with voters in Florida, Michigan, Missouri and New Jersey, no Bush voter mentioned Social Security. Many who cited Iraq as their reason for supporting him also said they oppose the war or have concerns about his conduct of it.

Still, across the nation, the shift was striking: 153 counties that voted Democratic for president in 1996 and 2000 chose Bush in 2004; only 11 chose Democrat John Kerry after voting Republican in 1996 and 2000. (Map: Trading spaces)

2. Utter bullshit..................
"he'll survey a Capitol Hill landscape that reflects the heartland he won on Election Day".

Heartland my ass! A bunch of dim witted fools who think to this day that their president would never lie to them. America, right or wrong. The government is looking out for them and would never sell them out. Heartland! Simple minded fools who trade belief for thought, who abandon their duty to seek the truth. I BELIEVE! Morons, they're not the Heartland of America, they're the scourge of America, the bane of America.

The neo-cons make them feel so self important, so moral, so fucking smug. And then turn around and shit all over them, but they're too stupid to realize it. They're too busy basking in the warm glow of being the "Heartland of America" to pay attention to what's happening to them, how they're being lied to each and every day.

Heartland my ass.

5. The best cheater won.
Those who had the fewest scruples, who didn't care about upholding democracy, who thought that it was more important to win, by hook and by crook, than to be honest and uphold the integrity of the office they held. That's what made the counties shift. Not a true honest election.

6. I can't wait 'til that fence-sitting "security mom" has to...
send her kiddies to Iraq in a few years... or Iran... or North Korea... or Cuba... or...

However I still think you spell "victory", in Bush's case, F-R-A-U-D.
