Some States do not know how many ballots were cast!! ... DATA HELP
I have been gathering the total numbers of ballots cast and total number of registered voters in each state. I'm trying to refine the data for an exit polls spreadsheet so that accurate candidate percentages can be used for comparisons with exit poll percentages. Believe it or not, we still do not have accurate candidate percentages! I also want to provide the accurate number of ballots and voters per electoral college vote.

This data search has been quite time-consuming and difficult for many states. More than 15 states do not provide the ballots cast information online. At least 9 do not state the registration statistics online. In those cases, I have e-mailed the SOS or BOE for the info. The responses have been interesting.

Some states respond quickly and provide data sought. For Pensylvania, the response was "don't know." For Delaware, the response is, "will have the actual number of votes cast in mid to late March."

Can anyone provide data for the following states?

Total ballots cast:

Alabama
DC
Georgia
Kansas
Kentucky
Massachusetts
Maine
North Carolina
New Hampshire
Oregon
Pennsylvania
South Carolina
Utah
Virginia
Wisconsin

Total Registration:

Alabama
DC
Kentucky
Maine
North Carolina
New Hampshire
Oregon
Virginia
Wisconsin

One more item for the election reform list: Universal and standardized data reporting in real time.

1. Have you seen this document?
"Total Votes Cast in 2000 and 2004 Last updated 12/8/04
(and % of those eligible to register and vote who did so)
Notes: 1. All 2000 and Voting Age Population data come from the Committee for the Study of the American Electorate.
2. Some 2004 totals are still unofficial, but are expected to be finalized this week.
3. “Eligibles” mean the Voting Age Population, i.e., those legally able to register and vote, a population number that changes each year."

It's a PDF doc, so you might need to get Adobe if you don't have it yet:

2. The numbers in this document do not agree with the states' data.
Perhaps they will come into agreement with their next update. Also, the numbers will not be official for all states until next month. later than this document purports!!

3. Response from South Carolina just in "numbers are not available..."
"The official turnout numbers are not available as of today. Since this
is a manual keying process of voters, we expect this to be finalized by
the end of Feb, first of March. Once completed this information will be
on our web site.

"In the meantime, we get unofffical general overall voter numbers by
just looking at total votes for a particular office - (President for
statewide numbers)...."

4. Massachussetts

Look for a file named stateeleres04.pdf

From the one I have, which may be preliminary since I took it right after the election:

LIB 15,022
REP 1,071,109
GREEN 10,623
DEM 1,803,800
NADER 4,806
UNDERVOTES ("BLANK") 15,067
Write-ins, overvotes, etc. ("ALL OTHER") 7,028

Bottom line:

Total votes for a major candidate: 2,905,360

Total "non-votes" 22,095

So a bit under 1% -- which is low, but not extremely low since we have a lot of precinct-count optical scan.
