KOEB Thread (Monday, Feb. 7)
Hi, girls. How is everyone tonight? We're getting more air play on Stephanie's show, as many of you already know. She read today from last Friday's daytime thread where we talked about her talking about us. Someone needs to call her -- this could get interesting.

Tonight's show should be good.

Shades of Super Bowl halftime. ;)

i'm sorry sparky, i didn't mean it like that. i was just repeating crap i overheard and trying to see how long i could tread water pretending i knew what the hell everybody was talking about. i did learn a lot about the patriots. without really trying.
i was just curious about fans and that tipping point they get to when they get sick of a winnning team. Like the Bulls and the Yankees. So it's an innocent question wrapped inside a compliment. I swear.

Normally I am the master of kitchen improv. I've transformed cake batter to a tasty chicken marinade during a little emergency. I'm not sure about this one though.

I have sweet potato fries going in the oven, and maybe I can make some grilled cheese out of my patented bronchitis bread.

I thought the game was a bit slow last night though. Not nearly as exciting as last years, half time show not included.

188. I loved that some of them brought their little children out onto the field
before the game. They DO seem like "regular nice guys," and I'm glad they and the Eagles got through the game without another major injury.

I'm glad it wasn't a blowout or humiliation for either side. I was on the edge of my seat sometimes too, which is the idea in sports.

Their misfortune is to be in a town that loves baseball most of all. After the Red Sox's astounding, miraculous season, everything else has to be a bit anticlimactic. I hope they get MAJOR cheering and support from fans in the homecoming celebration tomorrow. They really deserve it.

247. Yeah, I got mushy too. What a wonderful time to share.
So great for the fathers, too, to be able to share their pride and achievement with their children.

I felt much the same way about the scene after the game where Pats head coach Belllichik was standing so near his father Steve just after the end of the game that BOTH of them were drenched in the traditional Gator Ade bath. You probably know (more than I) about the long history with football shared by the two of them. How lovely that they shared that moment too. His dad is in his 80's now but was spry enough when hit by that tub full of Gator Ade!

Yes, it's very easy to see them as regular, nice guys, and you confirmed that impression in your earlier post.

I'm proud of them and for them, and by no means only for their win.

I'm getting mushy again!

147. I have to agree about the game. But NOTHING can possibly surpass
the thrill of the Red Sox defeating the Darth Yankees, even their subsequent sweep of the Cardinals in the World Series. That was such a miraculous time, I'll treasure it forever.

I really admire the Patriots for their hard work and professionalism. I think it was the difference in coaching that was the single biggest factor in the game last night. For example, the way the Eagles sort of walked around slowly and didn't double-call plays in the final minutes may have kept them from having a chance to even up the score. THAT was poor coaching. They should have been drilled in what to do in that situation.

I did enjoy most of the game, once things finally started settling down from the flurry of mistakes in the beginning. And it was nice to see Paul at halftime. He looked small among all those massive lightboards and fireworks, but he held his own.

171. The Swan Boats and the bronze duckling statues are famous Boston tourist
kitsch. They are little white boats with white wing shapes on the sides, a swan head inthe front, and (I think) foot pedals to make them paddle around. I've lived near Boston for over 20 years and have never been on a swan boat, but you would not believe the numbers of postcards I have seen with them featured. They're iconic.

The bronze statues of the ducklings and their mother are from an old children's book -- very famous in Boston -- called "Make Way For Ducklings." I'm not sure EXACTLY where they are, but since in the story they are supposed to walk among the busy pedestrians to go swimming near the Swan Boats, I'm sure they're around that area.

Bunnies, Swan Boats & Ducks -- sounds like good blackmail material to me! I'm glad WIll is on OUR side--he's mean!

The boats are in the background. They look like giant swans and are paddled around the pond in the Boston Public Garden.

My family had a really ugly tapestry. The goal was to hand it off, or hide it somewhere when you went to visit another family member -- without their knowledge. Someone once tossed it into the window of a moving train!

Have I said, "Hi!" yet? :hi:

108. If it was Rehnquist, I'll bet Poppy Bush was feeding him info
It's a case of "cui bono?" George H W Bush had lots to gain by getting Nixon out and he had intel dirt on everybody in DC. He's still feared because of that.

I suspect GHWB as being the hidden spider in the web, safely at a distance from the dark garages and threat of exposure, but feeding the info that would bring Nixon down.

Why assume Deep Throat acted alone and for solely patriotic reasons? I think it's probably more complex than that.

And welcome to the KOEB, HeeBGBz! I can tell from your username that you're a natural!

51. Hi BE and KOEB! Re Deep Throat, here's what I emailed to KO today
Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 08:17 PM by Nothing Without Hope
DEEP THROAT - Could he have been fed info by George H W Bush?

(snip)
With all the new noise about Deep Throat and the whispers that he is William Rehnquist, I find myself suspicious. The assumption that DT acted entirely alone and got his own information is an ASSUMPTION that is not questioned often enough. What if DT took the risk of meeting with the Woodward & Berstein but was fed info by someone else with excellent intel sources and his own agenda? I can easily see George H W Bush as the information feeder. As you point out in your blog, he did have his own agenda in wanting Nixon out. Poppy was in a position to know what was going on and would be alert for an opportunity to advance himself. To this day he is feared because he has dirt on so many people in Washington.

If Deep Throat was motivated by concern for the good of the country (another assumption, but let's consider it for a moment), then I can't see Poppy Bush in this bold, dangerous role. He's far too selfish and averse to personal political risk for that. What I CAN more easily imagine is Deep Throat being someone (Rehnquist?) who had his own reasons for stepping forward (possibly even concern about the good of the country, though I doubt it was that simple) but was being fed additional info by someone who was in it for themselves -- and George H W Bush fits in this role so well.

What I am saying is that even if William Rehnquist is named as Deep Throat after he dies, that should not be considered the end of the story. I strongly suspect Poppy Bush was pulling strings and played a major role in the events that finally forced Nixon out of office. Why should we assume that Deep Throat was just a single man, acting entirely without aid and for only his own reasons? It's romantic to think so, especially if we imagine him braving such dangers from pure patriotic motives, but I really think the real story is darker and more complex.

Cui bono? Who would gain from Nixon's removal? I see Poppy Bush as the spider at the center of the Deep Throat web. I imagine he's looking forward to escaping undetected from the flurry of publicity surrounding the outing of that long-held secret identity, laying the suspicions that he might have been involved. I can't see him waiting in garages, but I can see him providing the key info that would get the job done without danger to himself.

I wonder if John Dean thinks Deep Throat acted entirely alone, or whether he also thinks there is more to the story. There might be some clues in the types of info that DT had compared to what whoever is identified as DT would have. Would William Rehnquist really know everything that DT did without being told about it by someone deliberately feeding him the info?

Hello, ladies and gents.

For KO: :loveya::loveya::loveya::loveya::loveya:

inevitable, with love in the air so to speak, for us to turn to poetry.

So we have Botany's and we have yours. Two different poetic styles already--that's enough for an Eng Lit course!

Botany keeps unveiling new facets of himself. Stephanie just has to be fascinated by him & his elusive air of mystery & other charms.

We need to save those poems for the published collection later on!

The last time I went to the ER, my daughter was having an allergic reaction (to a turkish flute that was treated with almond oil 20 years earlier, good freak accident).

We hung out there for hours, with her mouth swelling up, and then finally it started to go down, so we left without ever being seen.

An experience not soon forgotten, no doubt. I'll bet some of them didn't know how the darts got there and were incredibly surprised when the doctor made mention of their existence. KO will be doing a follow-up one night and you'll spill your wine because you've recognized someone. :)

In a poetic sort of way (since that seems to be the theme around here) are there really any places more American then an NYC ER on NYE (and other acronyms as well)?

I wondered, what doofus city would allow that? Then they show Aurora Bay Care Hospital, and I just about shit!

BTW: Keith included a story about a kid who wears his Brett Favre jersey every day to school.

That's 2, count 'em, TWO stories connected to Green Bay.

I listened to part of the show the way home on the XM audio feed again and it occurs to me to remark that I got like 90% of the show content that I heard through the audio -- but the commercials were TOTALLY not understandable without the video. (Which is kind of funny, because when I'm at HOME, I'm totally WATCHING the show and only LISTENING to the commercials.)

224. Did I miss the offensive part of that commercial?
Women aren't allowed to bare their shoulders now?

It reminds me of the old days, when a couple on tv had to have a foot on the floor if they were on a bed. Now a woman has to have a strap on her shoulder so it's not technically bare?

Sparky, would you be a dear and pass me my burqa?

Don't worry, I'm not bitter about women, because I know now my ex isn't a woman, she's a DEMON FROM THE BOWEL'S OF HELL!!!!!!

286. Message of Thanks to the KOEB
Guys, just wanted to thank you for the hour of lightheartedness every evening. I haven't slept well since Nov 2 due to inability to fall asleep from thinking about 'everything' and the horrible dreams I've been having - from abu graib prison pictures to our soldiers (I dreamt the other night I was responsible for organizing a soldier's funeral, I had a clipboard in my hand and was standing on a hill in a cemetary when a soldier came running down the hill with an old round charcoal grill, he threw it forwards and ashes flew upwards through the sky. The last thing I heard before I woke up was my voice yelling 'is that my soldier, is that my soldier?'. Fast forward to Tuesday, Tie One on Night, I really enjoyed reading that thread, it was fun to see everyone's excitement and see a connection between freedom fighters and their messenger. That night I dreamt about the beach. I just wanted to say thanks for sharing your hour of drooling and floaty hearts and also for occasionally telling us what he says : ). Until someone writes out a transcript of each show, that's all I have.

288. How funny is this? Now we've been talked about on national radio!!!
Can you believe it? Stephanie Miller actually referred to our group, "The Keith Olbermann Estrogen Brigade" on her radio show, apparently more than once. Seems she was more interested in matters other than serious Olbermann journalism that are discussed in our threads, but still... Here's the KOEB thread -- and it will make you smile -- from the last time this happened (last Friday morning):
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=203x316797
Title: "OH MY GOD - KOEB THREAD ON STEPHANIE MILLER!"

For full appreciation, you would have to read some back threads, but it's pretty funny on its own. I hope it cheers you as it did us.

And then there is the KOEB -- well not to END all KOEB threads -- but it's surely monumental. It's over 650 posts now and one of the best. (And our longest by a wide margin.) If you and your computer linkup can take it, here it is, our thread from last Friday:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=203x317483

I actually believe that finding things to laugh about in these sad, scary times is SERIOUS BUSINESS. Here's the Mark Twain quote I've been citing a lot recently:
"Irreverence is the champion of liberty and its only sure defense."

Snark is good in its own right, but it is also a direct aid in getting the truth out and facing it. We have to help keep each other's spirits up, because to give in to chic cynicism or despair would cost too damn much in every way.

Thank you for your post. Don't be surprised if you see it discussed on tonight's KOEB thread. You are helping US keep OUR spirits up, too. For which I think you on behalf of the KOEB.

You're welcome to join in on our threads at any time, you know, whatever your level of estrogen. Some people do drive-by posts, just to keep their fingers in!

If you've read our threads recently, especially the Tie One On thread, then you're familiar with our official toast:
TO THE TIES THAT BIND!!!
:toast:

And for you, SaveAmerica,

Thanks for the floaties! And also for the message. After I had the beach dream I realized I should take more time out to do things that don't involve political books and webpages since I don't have cable anymore. I watched "Chicago" and after the scene with the reporters I said to myself 'they were just Roved'! And then there's the dummy scene, and the one song the lawyer (R.Gere) sang on the steps that had Bush administration all over it. Hopefully it will be sooner than later that freedom to enjoy things will come back!

291. "Verklempt"!!! Yeah, you're a KOEB reader all right!
"Feh" is another fave, but Patsy is the only one that pronounces it just right!

I think your plans to find some balance and more chances to find things to enjoy are very wise. You can't let your concern and compassion become burdens to you instead of the blessings they are -- you have to keep your spirits up. There is much beauty and goodness in the world and in people. I recommend taking walks in nature and doing some silly things just because you enjoy them. Refresh yourself with laughter and warm peace and good company. Then you can return to the firing lines with new strength.

I firmly believe that hope is something that has to be worked at, like a healthy body and disciplined mind. It is easily damaged, and then your boat may still have its rudder, but where it its sail?

Also, feeling hope is extremely practical as part of what can spread the truth and convince people. Many people in this country are scared and close to despair about the future, not only of this country but of humanity itself. Speaking with someone who still dares to dream, has practical plans to work toward those dreamed-of goals, and can smile from the heart can make an enormous impact. Here's another quote for you:

In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit. –Albert Schweitzer, philosopher, physician, and musician (1875-1965)

So you can see why I chose my username.

In closing, here's one of my favorite quotes from Albert Einstein; it has a distinctively Buddhist flavor, I think:

A human being is a part of the whole, called by us, "Universe," a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security.

Be well, SaveAmerica.

And come join us in the KOEB meetings any time!

292. Humor is a critical element in building communities, and the mixture
of all kinds of humor with some very incisive discussions of serious matters is proof of the power here.

Through this humor and companionship, we've created networks for very serious action that would not have come in to being otherwise.

And the effect on morale has been a critical element to the burgeoning of this community, IMO.

298. I agree with all my heart, Bleever!
We will need to figure out how to make the KOEB accessible to more people without slowing the thread so much.

And of course, there also need to be lots more of these communities. I do most seriously feel that we are witnessing the beginnings of true internet-based progressive activist communities, and these are our best hope against the fascist blivet** administration and the co-opted corporate media (except Keef!). I see these DU communities as a prototype of a vital new socio-political development, something radically new on multiple levels.

We need to keep alert to threats to this internet freedom from the forces that are beginning to see it as a threat to their dominance. I have no doubt that they will try to suppress it.

301. Here are Skinner's suggestions on how to speed up thread loading
Here is what he told me when I asked about it:

A couple suggestions.

You should go into your preferences and change a few things. Two functions that are particularly helpful are the following:
- Set "Display signatures?" to "no"
- Set "Hide avatars and other images?" to "yes"
That will get rid of a lot of the graphical embellishments.
You can also view forums in collapsed threads mode. There is a link in the top left corner of any forum that says Expand Threads or Collapse Threads.
High numbers of posts are the thing that slows down a thread the most. You can get around this a little by viewing in single-post mode, but it is not a perfect solution. Unfortunately, we haven't come up with a good solution to this problem.

I can tell you that the number of posts is the biggest slow-down agent, though doing as Skinner suggests with the Preferences settings does help significantly. We can cut the threads into two parts and we can also consider reducing the number of posts with just 2 or 3 words in them. We'll work out something together that will maintain spontaneaity and openness to people dropping by to post with us or join us.

317. Wow -- now THAT's a COMPLIMENT! Thanks, Bleev!
I'll have to save that one - "exemplify the power of mixing EDV and IQ." That's something to try to live up to! I note that one of the smilies in the "hug" emoticon is blushing; that would be me:

I do believe that the DU community is a prototype of what HAS to happen if we are to turn this country around. With the corporate media carrying Big Brother's propaganda -- and the blivet** really IS somebody's Big Brother, oddly enough -- we have no option but to end-run them and get the information and organizing news out IN SPITE OF them. This is an issue that URGENTLY NEEDS BRAINSTORMING to come up with practical ways to reach out to the people of this country, including those that don't get their news from the internet.

Internet-based political activism is a totally new thing, something that Germany didn't have as it slid into fascism under Hitler, and is one of our greatest sources of hope. That's why it has to be protected from the inevitable attacks aimed at suppressing dissent and all sources of non-propaganda news. And also why we at DU as a community need to come up with more ways to take advantage of this vital communication network.

Sorry, I start getting preachy sometimes this time of night. I do feel strongly about this and I think you do too.

The "having a good time" part is important too!
:toast:

Be well & good night
:hi:

319. SaveAmerica, it looks like you've not only been officially welcomed...
... but ABSORBED into the KOEB Community!
I could so relate to the things you said, by the way: Ever since the U.S. invaded Iraq, it seemed as though the ground hadn't stopped moving. Many people said "everything changed on 9/11," but it didn't for me until the invasion, which totally changed our relationship to the rest of the world.
Since then, I'd hardly slept and couldn't get organized, things didn't seem quite real. Then I discovered KO's Countdown, which was not only funny but felt real and true. And I found there were others who had grabbed onto that lifeline also -- the most joyous being the
KOEB! :-) I've read whole threads to my husband, or sometimes he reads over my shoulder and we laugh ourselves silly!
TIE NIGHT was absolutely the BEST; I was up all night reading and laughing and was so happy that all the care these people had put into choosing the tie had paid off when KO actually wore it on the air! It was a memorable moment, so much so that even those who weren't in on the project couldn't help getting caught up in the celebration. (That was the first night I ever posted on a DU board, and was welcomed by Sparky -- who'd stayed after the party to sweep up the floaty hearts! Thanks, Sparky, and everyone in the KOEB for making me feel at home.)
You've landed in a good place here, SaveAmerica!

Here are some links to dzika's Countdown videos. There are more in the archives. I think I posted the earliest one first, although there are others. I just picked one at random.

And, if no one else has posted this yet: KO and the Talking Ann Coulter doll. A classic in TV.

351. I love the "extended hour" I get to spend here, too. I don't post much
but feel like I have a kinship with KOEB. It really started out with the common goal of finding out more about election fraud. It has really evolved into something quite unique.

... it's the only chance somebody on dial-up has to read the whole thread -- after it's taken around 10 minutes to load! :-)
