GOP Consultant Sentenced in Phone Jamming
Tue Feb 8, 2:40 PM ET
By TIM McCAHILL, Associated Press Writer

The former head of a Republican consulting group was sentenced Tuesday to five months in jail for jamming Democratic telephone lines in several New Hampshire cities during the 2002 election.

..snip..

Chuck McGee, former executive director of the New Hampshire Republican Party, also pleaded guilty. He is scheduled to be sentenced next month.

..snip..

James Tobin, 44, regional chairman of Bush's campaign last year, was indicted in December and pleaded innocent. Tobin, of Bangor, Maine, had stepped down from Bush's New England campaign in October after the allegations against him became public. In 2002, he was northeast political director of the party committee working to elect Republican senators.

1. I'm actually
surprised at this. Usually the thieving conniving bullies get away with everything, inlcuding murder on a mass scale.

3. OMG,
that reminds me of those jokes. What d'ya call 1 million Repugs at the bottom of the ocean? A good start. Sorry if it is old and too trite, but I still enjoy it when the occasion calls for it.

5. Ooooo! I hadn't heard that joke before...
but if it were the right million ~ it would be an excellent start...

hmm, if it feels too wrong to wish them "at the bottom of the ocean", substitute "serving a 25 year prison sentence" and enjoy that thought!

4. Bush-Cheney knew about Tobin for months but kept him on...
As the end of the article notes: Tobin, of Bangor, Maine, had stepped down from Bush's New England campaign in October after the allegations against him became public.

Josh Marshall was all over this in October. He reported that the Bush-Cheney campaign had to have known about this criminal for months. Yet they kept him on as the New England regional director. We're so used to this crap we almost forget to be outraged. But I'm here to remind y'all that this is in fact outrageous.

Per Marshall on Oct 21, 2004:

BACK ON JULY 1st a source first told me that Allen Raymond, the man at the heart of the New Hampshire phone-jamming scandal, had fingered Jim Tobin as one of his accomplices. (Tobin's role was reported first on TPM on October 11th.) Tobin, as we've noted earlier, was the New England regional director of the Bush-Cheney campaign until he resigned last Friday.

That's more than three and a half months ago. The Bush campaign has known at least since then. And I suspect much longer. And yet they left him in the post.

That means the campaign kept in place a man implicated in an election tampering scam that took place in the same part of the country over which the campaign had given him oversight.

What does that tell you?

Another point ...

To the best of my knowledge no political reporter covering the Bush campaign has asked a campaign spokesperson 1) when they found out about Tobin's role in the election tampering scheme and 2) why they didn't remove him from the campaign after they learned.
