Reid Lashes Out Over 'Obstructionist' Label
White House Refuses to Denounce Attack Mailing

WASHINGTON (Feb. 8) -- Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid questioned President Bush's honesty on Tuesday and said he wanted ''the boys at the White House'' to know he wasn't losing any sleep over the Republican Party labeling him an obstructionist. The object of Reid's ire was a lengthy RNC document headlined ''Sen. Minority Leader Determined to Obstruct President Bush's Agenda.''
The White House refused to denounce the attack. ''You can talk to the Republican National Committee about what they did. I'm not familiar with all the aspects of what they're doing,'' said White House spokesman Scott McClellan. The RNC is chaired by Bush's former campaign manager and works closely with White House officials to advance the president's legislative agenda.
On Monday, Reid called the RNC material a ''hit piece'' and urged President Bush to stop the committee from distributing it.
Reid added, ''I want the boys at the White House, the girls at the White House, the men and women at the White House, everyone to understand, I haven't lost one wink of sleep over the attack yesterday.''
''I believe that the president who says at the State of the Union, 'I'm reaching out to my friends in the Democratic Party,' he says to me the day after the election, 'We're going to have a new atmosphere in Washington.' He said, 'I don't have to run for re-election, it's going to be different.'
''We know when he came here, he said he wanted to be a uniter, not a divider. I'm beginning to think that those statements are just absolutely false.''
