For the life of me... (Stats for this forum)
...I can't find the original post to kick it. But I promised to update the chart, so here it is. The below chart shows how much posting during the day and being sensationalistic in your subject line impacts the number of people who will read your article. So now you know.

Not that you didn't before. And if you wake up tomorrow and look at the front page and find it filled with exclamation points, ALL CAPS, etc, I apologize. Though I shouldn't. We each only have our own human nature to blame :-)

(Note "This post" in the graph title is actually another post, the one I can't seem to find. Some may have to refresh images in their browser if only two sets of bars appear.)

1. Mid-day is higher
couldn't that be explained by assuming that people are visiting DU over their lunch break?

I love this statistical analysis by the way.

Got anymore?
:)

2. Yeah, I got one other, but not of DU.
This was actually after lunch. But yes, I'm sure that there are even better times to post. You can see the difference between the late night post (the graph isn't too clear and is missing the narrative from the original post -- the "boring" post was posted in the wee hours of the morning) which stayed on the front page longer, versus the high traffic post which got a brief but amazing surge and was off the front page in about 1 hour.

Anyway, since you love statistical analysis, here's some other colorful graphs (King County, WA absentee breakdown)

4. Skids, I THINK I GOT THE IDEA!! But for clarity
what does "inline" mean or refer to, and who or what is "slashdot +4"? Thanks!

5. Not sure I understand completely either...
The time and number of hits scales are self-explanatory, but what do the different colors represent - I'm guessing that's the measure of sensationalism? I think I had the same problem understanding the original post.;(

6. The bars are just different articles.
Each bar is a different article, and yeah it was easier to understand with the original article.

To answer the post above, Slashdot is a very popular news website for computer/science folks, and the +4 is the rating that the mauve post got on a scale of -1 to +5.

Difference between "must click" and "inline": on Slashdot, in order for me to see your "hit" you had to click on a link I posted in a comment. On DU, I can embed an image so the only thing you have to do to register a "hit" is open the article. Had that been the case o slashdot my webserver probably would have crashed due to the load.
