Need Swift Boat liar /historychronology...
I need it to write dialog for a character I am calling "Shallow Throat" for a parody site in the manner of Behind The Music called Behind The Election.

Didn't Roy Hoffman get pissed off because he was portrayed as being like the Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore (Robert Duvall) in Apocalyse Now in the book about Kerry?

1. He got pissed because he was shown to be a promotion hungry
politico that didn't care how many men he got killed in pointless military actions as long as it made him into an Admiral.

Brinkley's Tour of Duty was what set him off and their was a great Washington Post article about it.

3. Here is the Washington Post article I was looking for - it starts off
looking like a nice, puff piece on Hoffman but it gets much better and to the truth in the later parts of the article.

4. Fascinating article
I never saw this before the election. It seems that Hoffman may have cleaned up his own memories rather accepting what he really did. Also, I guess like anyone with any vanity, the real problem is that he is a bit player (and a villian at that) in what is likely to be the most definitive history (or at least the most well read)of his Vietnam service.

What's ironic is that the comments that appear to have really triggered his defensiveness and anger were not from Kerry (either as a young man or an adult.) It's also strange that he think that Kerry success is based only on those 4 months.

5. This article explained a lot to me about the Swift Liars and their denial
problem. It pisses me off so much what they did to Kerry instead of dealing with what the hell really happened.

The brain will perform magnificent flips and twists to deny facts it can't or won't accept.

8. I think a lot of their anger is feigned...
If the suggestion that attrocities were committed made them mad, why were they not mad at film makers Stone, Coppola, Kubrick and De Palma?

I am going to do a photo parody of Swift Boat liars heads in front of a photo from Mai Lai.

I have already put Roy Hoffman's head on Duvall's body from Apocalyse Now.

Preliminary design on staging server:

I still need a photo of someone ripping up voter registration forms for Nathan Sproul.

6. Yes, in 1996 he was among the people who were praising Kerry
then he got a look at his portrayal in the book "Tour of Duty" as being a classing body count guy, like the character in Apocalypse. Hoffman was Bob Kerrey's commanding officer when Kerrey and his squad committed a Mai Lai style attrocity, mostly because Hoffman would send them out saying he expected them to kill some gooks.

Truth hurts baby.

Supposedly he got in touch with O'Neill who was recovering from giving a kidney to his wife. That was supposed to have been in February, I think. What I don't get is how O'Neill, who says he'd pretty much forgotten about his past history with Kerry until the 2004 primaries is supposed to have gotten the idea for the book and written it and gotten it published all between Feb. and when the book came out in August. The publisher said they turned in a very well-researched book in record time. I have two thoughts about that. If it was in record time, something tells me it wasn't so well researched. If it was well-researched, it wasn't done in record time. I think O'Neill and Co. were planning this attack for much longer than they let on, maybe from the time he announced onward.

7. Yes! O'Neil couldn't wait to renew his smear campaign
against Kerry. Kerry made him look like such an idiot back in '71...
