NEWSWEEK PERISCOPE: Gannon's Enemies List

Date : Sunday - February 20, 2005

NEW YORK, Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- NEWSWEEK PERISCOPE item:

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20050220/NYSU006 )

Jeff Gannon is considering suing liberal interest groups, bloggers and others for a "political assassination" that drove him from his job as a reporter for a conservative news outfit called Talon News, he told NEWSWEEK. Gannon, whose real name is James Guckert, singled out Media Matters -- a "well-funded" liberal group headed by longtime "attack dog" David Brock. ("Everything we wrote about him came from the public record," Brock replied.)

It remains unclear how Gannon got routine White House press access for nearly two years; he acknowledged he first began getting clearance to White House press briefings in early 2003 as a representative of GOPUSA, a group headed by Texas GOP activist Bobby Eberle-months before Eberle even created Talon News. Gannon said he had no access to White House aides outside the press room, nor did he try to interview any. When President Bush called on him at a press conference last month-during which he asked a question with false info about Sen. Harry Reid-"nobody was more surprised than myself," said Gannon.

4. Suing them?
Even though he had his genitals splashed all over the Internet?

I thought you could sue for slander and libel only if it was not true.

5. ooohh, goody! Can't wait for our team to have subpoena power
over the Gannon gang! Go for it Jeffy! PLEEEEEAAASE!

Everybody must pledge to help out with legal fees for our dear friends at Kos and Americablog.\

Not that this will ever happen. The threat to sue is just step three in the BushCo handbook under "exposed as fraud: what to do." Step 4 is drop out of sight for six months. Step 5 is to reappear "rehabilitated" with a far better job. Watch Armstrong Williams, he'll show us how it's done.

9. no, as a GOP spokesman
Just like Bill Bennett. There will be apologies for his sins, then so long for 6 months, then back on Scarborough and Hannity as a spokesman for the right.

22. Awe shux
I wanted him to be born-again and "saved" from his sins! I wonder, why are they "born-again" and "saved" form their sins only AFTER their private hypocritical lives as "prostitutes, soliciters of prostitutes, adulterers and child molesters" is revealed???

At any rate, there's more to the story and I am waiting for the other shoe to drop on this whole corrupt administration. I can't wait!

7. You Go, JeffyJames!
Get those lawsuits filed right away! Don't let those RW flacks you hang out with tell you otherwise. Those 'liberal-media'-types and infernal bloggers have destroyed your livelihood, so don't take it lying down! We need public exposure of your plight - and lots of it - so make your case and let them make theirs! Get that media spotlight focused on this travesty! You GO!

10. Hey, Jeff, if you're reading this,
you may not wish to sue anybody at all, since lawsuits involve this little period called 'discovery', and uhm.... we've discovered you, pal. See, if you try anything like this, you'll think the bloggers have been playing for fun until now.

Not to mention, you'll probably get laughed out of court. Give it up, Jeff- your only possibility for redemption from our side now is for you to pull a David Brock- and actually, I think you may end up being a hero to us if you know what you've implied you know.

Abandon the people who'll kiss you on the pillow, but cuff you in the square. We won't do that to you. Even though you may have been a fake, you're still human to us... but not to many of the people you're working for. We can feel the good in you even now, Jeff; we can bring you back to the good side...

Apologies for the "Star Wars" reference there at the end.... I just couldn't resist.

11. its only libel or slander if it isn't true! I think he just wants to make
sure he stays in the news to keep him a high profile target. It could be argued that a high profile target is safer than a low profile one.

13. Gannon/Guckert is AN IDIOT!!!
I almost fell off my chair laughing when I read this. This would be a WONDERFUL WONDERFUL time for him to sue because then we could go and get MORE EVIDENCE on him. He lives in PRETEND WORLD!!!!! This bunch is soooooooooooooooooooooo backwards it's not even funny. The bloggers tell the truth and they otherside is absolutely beside themselves because we uncovered the truth.

Waiting for the IMPEACHMENT WHILE THE SCANDALS KEEP UNFOLDING

"Thou shalt cry 'but I'm born again' and sue whenever your hypocrisy is exposed."

Blessed are the born-again litigants, for they shall be given rewards that can then be donated to the GOP.

20. "Gannon" issued the challenge, and it was accepted.
He said he was "hiding in plain sight" and that's where all the dirt was found.

He can't do that and then play the victim. What a coward.

I have a feeling CRC is behind it, and if so, we've got him. Also, does anybody remember if there was some Gannon connection to Go Daddy Software?

23. Truth is an absolute defense, and he is a "public figure"
1. In defamation - "Truth Is An Absolute Defense"

2. He is a "public figure" - and therefore would have to show actual malice - Sullivan v. New York Times.

The wet dreams of a loud mouth GOP bully.

I wonder if CNN would broadcast wall-to-wall coverage of the trial!! Somebody start the popcorn!

Edited on Sun Feb-20-05 03:44 PM by Ojai Person
You can bet your life on it. The "secret" tapes released today are also a big part of the damage control.

Edited to add:

It is that age-old thug strategy of become the victim and start blaming the truth tellers as horrible attackers.

29. Maybe he can submit his spread eagle, nude, fully erect photo
..as one of the exhibits of his "credentials.."

Because he sure as hell had no press credentials. Aw, he lost his job at Talon? A fake "news" site. Gee what a shame. Maybe he can launch more porno sites to make up for it. At least those had some entertainment value.
