Need the power of DU behind this
We need to promote our agenda in a uniform and consistent manner. Part of this is by supporting liberal radio formats across the country.
In Dallas we are writing letters and circulating petitions to have a liberal station started.
But we need liberal radio in all markets across the country so that we can spread our messages, spread the truth and combat Rush and his minions. There are some very good liberal hosts out there to do this, but we have to get them in and it is going to take the power of the people to do this.
If you could take a minute and sign one of these petitions it would be most appreciated.
If you are interested in helping this grassroots effort to get liberal radio in your area, please pm me. We can share letters, petitions, tips on how to target the station and help spread democracy in a constructive way.
The first petition is for North Texas and the 2nd petition is for anyone that supports liberal radio to sign. This particular one is the one we will use in all markets that we target.
Thanks for your help.

North Texas residents sign this one:
http://www.petitiononline.com/rad1357/petition.html

Supporters living outside North Texas please sign this one:

3. Either way as a North Texas resident
I can certainly say that we are in desperate need of liberal talk here. The kool-aid drinking is epidemic in these parts. KLIF radio is probably the worst but not the only offender around here. Let us know when those petitions are back up because I will sign as will many of my friends.

4. I live in Dallas and we already have a liberal radio station.
I live in Dallas and we already have a liberal radio station. I listen to KERA 90.1FM every morning. It is very liberal, and sometimes their bias bothers me... especially when they had Nader on a few weeks before the election and basically just let people call in and scream at him. However, most of the time, KERA 90.1FM is very thoughtful and balanced radio.

7. I missed that
Edited on Thu Feb-24-05 03:03 PM by PunkPop
Just screamed at him huh? One after the other just screaming into the phone.

Please provide more examples of KERA's "bias". The kind that bothers you SO MUCH.

Could it be anything as bad as KLIF putting up a billboard with a giant picture of Osama Bin Laden with the phrase "Some People are Trying to Kill You" right next to it?. WTF is up with that!

So by all means, yes, lets combat the entrenched right-wing freaks that dominate the airwaves around here with bland, non-entertaining public radio :eyes:.

28. Nothing personal
Nothing personal. Don't act so offended. I don't like bias to the left or to the right, in serious news/political talk radio. So while KLIF is bad, it doesn't make NPR's occassional bias justified. Btw, I think I saw that billboard on Dallas North tollway... my wife and I were driving and were like, "what the hell was that"?

I couldn't tell if it was a joke or serious.

Anyway, the best way to combat right-wingers is with stuff like NPR. You can't be completely devoid of bias, but NPR does a pretty good job. It would be hard to do better. Also, if you think that NPR is bland and non-entertaining, then maybe you should give examples as to why you think that way. I personally find informative, mostly unbiased news and critical political analysis very entertaining and informative.

Do you want some guy to just get on the radio and whine about Bush? You think that will help us? Look, if we want to get these neocons out the government, we are going to have to be more professional than that.

5. Even better...
I should add one last point. Why start a liberal radio station? Why not start a radio station that truely is objective, truthful, etc? It seems silly to fight bias with more bias. Instead, fight the kool-aid drinkers with truth, facts, and objective sound reasoning. Sure many of them don't care about silly little things such as facts, but then those same people sure as hell won't care about liberal bias.

Our side should win because we truely are right and the other guys truely are wrong.

8. To Add on to this point....
When the right started the hate radio, they didn't call it "conservative radio", in fact, just the opposite, they acted as if all the other radio was bias and they were the ones being truly objective.

Look at fox news. "Fair and balanced"

When you try to start something and call it "liberal radio", all you do is automatically limit your audience.

Call it "real radio" or something like that... if it happens to have a progressive bias, oh well, those are the breaks, but why be so danged honest about it? Lord knows the right never is!

9. Label it whatever you want
but we need a radio station that is in juxtaposition to all the ultra neocon talk in the D/FW area and one public radio station will not combat all the kool-aid drinking hosts that we have in the area.

16. Well, in a nutshell
Thats what liberal radio is.
We speak the truth unvarnished by lies...we can take it.
"Conservative" radio however, has about 10 coats of paint and lacquer on it to cover the truth.
So when I speak liberal radio--it is for the truth and for the people who want to hear the truth.
Just want to make sure we don't get entrenched with "MSM" or "Conservative".

19. I recently moved to Cincinnati
and we have 1530 (WCKY) from Northen Kentucky and it's great.

I've listened to Rush et al (in the belief that it is good to know thine enemy - and it's scary to hear them say the same things my conservative friends spew...) and I prefer this station.

They play the Jerry Springer show (http://www.springerontheradio.com), Ed Schultz and Air America and frankly it's refreshing to hear the things that get missed on unbiased news/talk formats as well as the more obvious righty formats.

I also like the fact that Schultz and Springer both will take calls from listeners who disagree with them, and can stand up to their arguments quite well. This is something I've noticed that Rush and friends do not do - they cut off a caller with a differing viewpoint almost instantly.

One of my favorite Springerisms recently RE: the war in Iraq - it's like taking a bat to a bee hive.

20. Remember, too, that Dallas is Clear Channel.
In one sense, I would sure hate to lose any of the conservative talk show hosts here in "the reddest county in the reddest state of America". It gives me no end of pleasure to scream "YOU FUCKING IDIOTS!!!" at the top of my lungs either in the house or on the road at any of the offenders, especially to that idiot Davis on WBAP. Hoping against all hope, I suppose. Guess I'll keep listening to Franken on the computer.

Respect is earned, not mandated.

hoping we can leave Clear Channel out of the mix.:)
By the way, in case you aren't familiar with the numbers in Dallas County, 49% voted for Kerry--so you aren't as red as you think.:)

25. We're not in Dallas County...
We're in Allen, in Collin County. It's not as diverse as Dallas... sort of like living in a loaf of 'Wonder Bread'. Clear Channel will air liberal talk in Dallas when the Stars win this year's Stanley Cup. ;-)

24. The first one to do this in any market will make a ton of money
The reason is that nearly half of all Americans would rather listen to a different point of view. If you have 4 conservative formats and one liberal, the right wingers are divided 4 ways while the liberals will all listen to the one liberal station. That could be 50% of the market for the first one to go left.

IMHO, you should make this point in your petition.

Even if liberals are a minority in TX, I'm sure they are a large one. 40% maybe? That's still huge.

This is why Air America is so successful, at least in some markets.

Good luck!

26. Good business sense, Bill
wonder if there is a way Air America can figure out who's streaming their radio casts. I do it here in Houston and when I listen to Randi Rhodes, I hear many callers from Texas. I don't know of any radio stations that broadcast librul radio totally. There is a larger audience than they think using your reasoning-even without hard numbers. Once I figured out how to get it on computer, I haven't listened to anything else (except NPR at drivetime)and I know I am not the only one. Thank God for Air America.....and the internets.

35. That will be harder to get but I am curious
and I wonder if that isn't the direction that MSNBC is trying to go.
Keith is already on board, now they have Ron Reagan (although I have not yet got to watch).
Tweety vascillates hot and cold, although lately he has seemed to lean more toward a Democratic agenda.
Scarborough just needs to quit pretending and go to Faux.
I would sure like to see our side of the spectrum represented fully as in a full time liberal station.
We can always dream and write letters though!
