1. Gee - VERY early tonight! LOL! I haven't even warmed up my son's
pizza so he'll quietly watch TV in the living room whilst I watch KO with the EBs!

I hope Keef is in a cheerier mood than he seems to have been the past couple of days!

This should make him smile - I know it makes me smile!

:loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya: for Keef!

11. Tonight on Countdown, superglue eyedrops for monk
Tonight on Countdown

Pope John Paul II was hospitalized Thursday after suffering a relapse of the flu, the Vatican said, a day after the pontiff made his longest public appearance since being discharged from the clinic two weeks ago. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7022618/

Keith blogs. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6210240/

* Seeking common ground amid sensitive differences on democracy, President Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed Thursday on new efforts to keep nuclear arms away from terrorists as well as sovereign nations like Iran and North Korea. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6992078/

* A man wearing a police uniform drove a car bomb inside the main police compound in Saddam Hussein's hometown north of Baghdad on Thursday, setting off a massive explosion that killed 15 police and wounded 22, officials and witnesses said. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6913272/

* A Fort Worth woman says her new husband is incapable of murder -- even though police say he has confessed to killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend and her son. Trish Barbee says "it's impossible" that Stephen Dale Barbee, 37, could have killed 34-year-old Lisa Underwood and her 7-year-old son, Jayden Underwood. http://www.nbc5i.com/news/4227699/detail.html

* Canseco? We'll see. Jose Canseco scheduled to be Keith's guest, tonight.

* And tigers & turkeys... you'll just have to see for yourself.

That's some of what we're working on for tonight's show.

Finally,
Doctors have partially restored the sight of an 81-year-old Buddhist monk who accidentally glued his eyes shut when he mistook a tube of superglue for eye drops. The doctors at Angthong Hospital, 100 kilometers north of Bangkok, used a chemical solvent, acetone, to dissolve the glue in the monk's right eye, a hospital spokesman said. It took two-hours. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/E/EYES_GLUED?SITE=NWCN&TEMPLATE=STRANGEHEADS.html&SECTION=HOME
Kids, don't try this at home.

OMG - Ouch! Don't laugh, but...
I super glued my mouth shut once. Teeth to teeth, tongue to lips... it was AWFUL! (Okay, maybe you can laugh a little...)

I needed to use the super glue and the tip had a clog on it. Without even thinking (obviously - DOH!) I grabbed the clog with my teeth to yank it off and of course ended up shooting glue into my mouth when the clog came off. (Had to use acetone to get everything unstuck and was sick as a dog for a couple of days afterwards.)

But EYES? Man... hurts to even think about it.

Maybe some evening when we're feeling especially rowdy and she's in the mood for roof-raising we can import a FULL PIPE ORGAN for the party and she can let loose with the foot trills! I would LOVE to hear THAT. If the neighbors complain, we'll give them a Guinness and have them join the party.

169. Actually, I did that once.
We got back from a church trip and had an overnight at the home church. we were all pretty pumped up and partying. So my friend Jeff (NO NOT THAT JEFF!) and I hit the organ.

Well, someone called the police on us. They came to the door, and everyone said "we weren't that loud," and the police said "no, one of the neighbors was complaining about the organ music." (I still think it was Jeff's fault, not mine. I hold back.)

227. Well, Cheese, there's no holding back with US! LET 'ER RIP!!!
(Ordinarily that last phrase would get Sparky's attention, but he's in a smiling semicoma in the armchair, with Bunny's special footrub! )

My aunt, who was marvelous with seemingly almost any instrument, blasted out a Bach piece on a church pipe organ for me once -- the church was empty except for us in the organ balcony at the time. What an experience!!! Absolutely thrilling, hair-on-the-back-of-the-neck spine-tingling, I can't find the right words to describe it with enough passion. I was a child at the time and I have never forgotten that miraculous moment. Time stopped until the last echoes faded.

As for our neighbors HERE, well, the people discussing the scary and depressing and disgusting latest political events would surely appreciate some uplifting organ music. And there's plenty of Guinness for everyone. They can then go back to the depressing stuff with some internal fortification.

In the meantime, Sparky's requested your piano playing, and I'd love to listen too.

Good evening to you!

288. Hi, Bleever.
:hi:

Spent a lot of time at that chapel. In my last year, I was a Duke Chapel "worship and arts" intern. Got to do all the grunt work for special services, and work closely with the chapel staff. It was an amazing experience.

I had chapel keys, so I could get in at any time. Before the recital, I'd go in from 10 pm - 2 am to practice, and had the whole place to myself. There is no closer heaven on earth! O8)

305. Wow, again. How nice. Now, as for me,
I once climbed to the very top of the chapel at Carleton College, and needing to leave some token of my conquest, tied my underwear around a spire.

Later, before graduation, my roommate and I snuck into the chapel and suspended a plastic pink lawn flamingo from the rafters over the speaker's podium.

I share this in confidence, knowing that you won't rat me out to God, right?

Right?

:)

318. I'm quite certain
that God got a kick out of it. How funny! The underwear is clever, but the flamingo is a scream!

Since most graduations occur in May, they are often near the day of Pentecost. You know, when the Spirit descends to the disciples, and red flames appear over their heads. A pink flamingo, IMO, is totally appropriate, and I may borrow that idea for later this year.

347. Bleev, I was looking for a pic of my church, but it's offline.
(I'm gonna have to check into why that's the case. grr.)

We have a contemporary, A-frame church. I'd love to see ya try to climb that one. And if you can, I'll give you MY underwear to put up there! (But you'll have to hurry, because we're getting a new roof later this year - and then I won't even let the gulls go up there!)

304. Wow, that is GORGEOUS, and I bet the sound fills your bones when you play
Now that DVDs are getting so easy to make, maybe you can make a recording of your playing on the Flentrop and let us share it at an especially appropriate KOEB moment! Or at other times, too.

As Sparky pointed out, organ music can directly affect your emotions. It's best when it surrounds you and vibrates you from the inside out, but even in a recording it's glorious.

I'm looking forward to listening to you play some day. I'm pretty sure it will happen. And when it does, I want you to promise in advance you won't hold back!

371. Yes, that DOES sound like soul food
Over the years I have come to believe that just as mental and physical health benefit greatly from disciplines designed to support and enhance them, the same is true of the ability to maintain a state of hope. I suppose it could also be considered a kind of spiritual energy, though the term "spiritual" has become side-tracked in so many directions its meaning is sometimes fuzzy.

In any case, as I grew past the time of life when optimism and energy came spontaneously (which is one of the great gifts of young people and just one of the reasons they need to be included prominently in political movements, by the way), I gradually realized that I had to deliberately pursue ways to keep my hope up. It's a discipline in which I have a very great deal to learn, but then there IS so much to be learned -- a positive point in its own right. The varieties of what can be called "hope food" or perhaps "hope-muscle exercises" appear to be endless. I can well imagine your gorgeous, time-expanding organ music among them. If I can feel it even as a listener; I can only guess what it must be to play and send those delicate trills and mighty chords flying out into the waiting silence.

Contining to fight in the horrible state this country is in takes a LOT of "hope food." It would be easy, and uttlerly fatal to any chance of turning things around to a better path, to give up and join the chorus bleating about how hopeless it all is. Well, I believe that if you allow yourself to lose all hope, you have nothing left -- hence my username.

Painting and drawing feed me, as does walking through natural places and watching all the daily changes as the seasons turn. Reading and indulging my endless curiosity have fed me all my life.

Of course, many especially hope-building events involve other people. You would know all about that. I'll close this post with a favorite quote on this:

In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit. –Albert Schweitzer, philosopher, physician, and musician (1875-1965)

373. Thanks, Hope.
I love your name. It is filled with promise.

I was just reading how it is so important to keep nurturing our spiritual side....and how women in mid-life (pre-menopause) are especially susceptible to despair. This, of course, is the classic time to focus on our inner spirituality.

You'd be amazed at how many pastors do NOT do this. These are the pastors who get in trouble: affairs, alcoholism, abuse in all its forms.... We get so busy focusing on other people's needs, we forget that we have to be especially focused on our own needs, and not just fill them with whatever is available at the time.

Hope, you have inspired me to seriously return to the keyboard. (And in advance, let me say "my Dad thanks you" - because he's been nagging me for years about it (and here I thought he was just ticked that I had wasted 2 decent music degrees).

377. Well, Cheese, you've really made my night.
No, I wouldn't be at all surprised that many pastors fall into the all-too-natural trap of giving too low a priority to feeding their own store of hope. They want to help, there is always so much to do, and there is always a long list of people who are needy. It's their job and their responsibility, so they can't as easily lose themselves in more neutral tasks like, say, a scientist can. (We scientists are in danger from other kinds of burnout, like going too far to the purely mental, "safe" side of life and starving the emotional side. But that's a different story.)

I think this comes of being taught that giving must come first, and anything else is selfishness. That's a BIIIIIIG mistake. The fact is, there's only so much spiritual energy within us at a given time, and it varies from day to day and at different times during the day. It can be fed and it can be drained. It's finite. It's such a common and tragic mistake to overlook that finiteness and keep trying to give more and more and more without replenishing ourselves.

You'll have noted that the Schweitzer quote I cited describes him as three things, and one of them is as a musician. There's a lesson there, I think -- I'm betting that music was one of his self-replenishment strategies. Sounds like you're blessed to have that strategy available to you as well. How wonderful to be able to derive (and give) so much intense pleasure while at the same time refilling the well.

Music isn't enough, and I'm sure you have other "hope food" sources, but from the sound of it, it's one really important source for you. Otherwise you wouldn't have been so drawn for it for so long.

Oh, I hope you do allow yourself to put a high priority on returning to this side of yourself. I'm betting your father has been asking you to not only because of all the training, but because he knows you well enough to realize that you need it in a profound kind of way.

If all goes well, he'll have the special bonus reward of being able to tell you that he told you so!

It sounds to me as though there really needs to be a concerted, organized effort invested in developing teaching approaches for ministers who are risking emotional burnout from shortchanging their own replenishment. I can sure see a lot of wonderful things that might be included in a workshop, say, or an online course on this vital subject. It could save lives, maybe even literally in addition to the readmission of life-enhancing spiritual energy. Does this sound like a project that might interest you? I've always found that teaching something deepens my own appreciation and grasp of it, and in this case that could be a wonder in its own right.

Enough preaching. I'm really excited about your allowing yourself to turn to your music and hope to hear more.

380. No, preach on, Hope, preach on!
I know Schweitzer well - I wrote a report on him when I was in 6th grade (we had to do a biography, and I chose an organist!). His life was one of giving and loving.

Your statement "music is not enough" is freaking me out, because that is what I said when I left the church music field to go to seminary. But I've been getting that calling to return, or rather, to blend the two together. That's what my dad's been trying to tell me.

This is a lonely profession, and it demands a high amount of energy. Most of the time it's do-able; but lately, it's been a lot to bear.

I'm probably going to miss most of the KOEB next week. I've got to go take my mom to the Dr on Monday and Friday (they live 3 hours away). And I just found out that my brother is coming from PA. (That put me in tears, because John doesn't just do that. My mom's not well.)

So, again, thanks for the words of Hope and encouragement. It really means a lot to me.

Thank you, my virtual friend.

382. Sounds like your life is in an "interesting" phase
when priorities shift and the pressure level and stakes rise. I'll be thinking about you and sending you "positive vibes" next week.

Re the "freaking out," what I meant is that one of my discoveries for myself is that I can't get what I need by focussing too narrowly on just a few sources of energy or areas of endeavor. I had a feeling that -- as art and/or scientific research is for me -- music by itself wouldn't be enough, but that doesn't mean that it isn't a wonderful source to build into your evolving mix.

Something I had neglected to add earlier is that laughter, especially with friends, is on the list of sources. It's one of the benefits of the KOEB and I hope it will be included in the Mission Statement for the Group. It's serious business, laughter is.

My best wishes -- what else to call it? that sounds so Hallmark -- are coming atcha, Cheese. I hope that when you need it most you'll be able to sense warmth of the interconnected world of caring souls all around you.

Good night!

I'll bet your toes are tingling and your muscles are all relaxed into little puddles. That Bunny sure knows what she's doing with foot rubs, I'm impressed! Who would have thought of feathers!!!

I can personally vouch for the wonderful effects of shiatsu massage -- I just had one this morning. I do recommend it strongly for a variety of mental, emotional and physical complaints. It not only helps in surprising ways, it is pure bliss.

Speaking of bliss, are you there yet? Have another KOEB brew, they don't give you hangovers or send you to the bathroom, nice as it is with its potpourri.

332. This corner of the room has been devoted to intense Sparky TLC
Edited on Fri Feb-25-05 10:28 PM by Nothing Without Hope
and to a highly stimulating discussion of fine music.

Sparky is approaching a happily comatose state in the Armchair Of Honor in front of the fire, with Bunny giving him the footrub of his life and the rest of us serving him KOEB brews and answering his every expressed whim. You really must take in the smile on his face -- it's a classic. He was overdue for a smile like that - we need to see that he gets more of them.

Now, if Keef ever came out of lurking mode long enough to make himself known, HE could take HIS turn in the KOEB Armchair Of Honor. I'm sure he would benefit from the footrubs, brew, and good company too! He must get mighty upset with what he has to deal with, trying to tell the truth when he is the last one on TV to do so. It's an awesome responsibility and he needs some TLC from the people who appreciate the importance of what he is doing. We can update his wardrobe advice and sharpen his snark relfexes while we're at it!

You're right, the brew has been flowing copiously over here and the music is GREAT!!! It's a nice balance to the political talk elsewhere in the room. I can only take so much of that before I have to refuel my spirits with good company and laughter.

Good to see you tonight, Clarkie! :hi:

Always good to celebrate with friends!

And I see Botany is over 900 posts now and our Sparky has already hit 1000! That must have happened recently, but I didn't see it. A little belatedly: for Sparky's 1000th post:

277. The blivet**'s approval numbers have been down for a long time
so it's interesting that they are allowing the fudged published polls to inch down a bit.

Maybe they thought it might be a bit suspicious to keep the "approval ratings" as high as they've been for so long, given the uniformly bad news about his administration. After all, once they lose all credibility, the polls -- run by those outfits that like to stress how SCIENTIFIC they are -- sink to the level of the propaganda-mongering corporate media....

...except for our wonderful, brave, fighting, funny Keith!

337. Alas, the 70's were not kind to many of us.
I just don't understand the return to the 70's thing. Mostly because when I was in school, the craze was "return to the 50's." I remember snarking "so I guess that in the 90's, they'll have a return to the 70's? Disco sucks."

I was so relieved when the 90's came and went. And then: AAARRRGH! They're back!

note: people who lived in the 70's seldom romanicize it. And nobody would love it if they had to wear 100% polyester of the 70's. Nobody.

147. Hey! I've been to White Rock Lake!
I used to work for a company that specialized in interior hotel renovation. We did lots of them in Big D. (The Hilton at LBJ and the Tollway, The Crowne Plaza in Farmer's Branch, a TravelLodge conversion that was by that Safari thing off of I-30, and a couple more I can't remember exactly... getting senile, I guess.)

My favorite places were on lower Greenville. We used to go to Caulfield's and "get potted" all the time... and the Mexican place! What was it... The Blue Goose, I think?

I *love* Dallas!

Lower Greenville is nice. Dallas really does have a lot to recommend it. What other city has a lake smack in the middle of it?

Did ya'll do the "Hiltop" hotel by any chance? That's my fave hotel just because it's owned by some Maharishi or something. We call it the cult hotel. When they bought it they changed on letter in the name, from the Hilton to the Hiltop. So I guess they probably didn't pay for any hotel renovations, heh heh.

260. Was it the Hilton at the top of the Tollway?
We did that one in (I think) late 1988/early '89. It was still a Hilton at the time, but they did close it down while we were remodeling. There was a HUGE ice storm while we were there, and they brought in the kitchen staff to cook meals for us because we couldn't go anywhere to eat because of the ice.

Yeah, those ice storms are something. We get one every few years. Just stay inside; the traffic is NOTHING to mess with!

Need help with the KOEB "shoot your mug" game please
From: Sydnie
Date: Feb 24th 2005

Patsy,

I am never here on Friday nights and I thought that would be the best night to start the post about the game. I was hoping that you would post about it this Friday for me.

I had a few ideas that may or may not be included in the game, depending on what every one wants to do.

For those that don't have a mug, I would be happy to mail one of mine out to them, with the idea that they either mail it to the next person or back to me to mail out again when needed.

I think it would be a good idea if they took a pic somewhere in their town/city that represents where they live, if possible.

I would like it very much if they would send some "token" that represents their city or their feelings about KO and the work he does as a gift for KO when we send him the finished product.

I would volunteer to print out all the pics and place them in an album with a personal note from the person in the picture placed with their picture, if anyone wants to include one.

These are just ideas, nothing is written in stone for sure. What ever everyone wants to do, will be fine with me. I just can't seem to get my schedule to work so that I am here early enough on Fridays lately to begin to arrange to do this.

What do you think? Can we pull this off?

Syd

375. And to think I almost bought a digital camera today!
I'd take a picture of the KOEB mug with my cat drinking out of it just to tease KO since I don't think he likes cats.

A picture of myself? Well, first I need to get my hair cut, buy some makeup, have a facial, lose 20 pounds, have my teeth whitened and get new clothes as well as the aforementioned mug and camera. That should take, oh, 6 months at least.

Oh, she is a naughty person and she must pay the penalty, and here in Castle Anthrax, we have but one punishment for setting alight the grail-shaped beacon: you must tie her down on a bed and spank her.

I really wish they'd have left that whole thing alone. It's nobody's business, and the fact that that fat slob, Jebbie, had to stick his nose into the whole thing blows. I still say legalize euthanasia.

Also, how MUCH do you hate those Florida "Choose Life" license plates? I always think of Frankie Goes to Hollywood when I see them, then I remember who our Governor is and I just get mad.

I hate the fish. I had the Darwin fish on my last car. I plan to start taking those stupid Wal-Mart "Support the Troops" magnets off the cars in parking lots very soon. Why don't they just send the $9.99 to the frickin' soldiers instead of to the Chinese manufacturers?

151. I'm very mixed on this Shivo story.
On the one hand, if she really didn't want to live as a vegetable, her parents should let her go; however, since she didn't leave specific word (just through the husband, who's motives are dubious, at best), then I don't see what the big deal is about letting her parents care for her if they can both want and afford to.

I dunno - this one perplexes me.

177. i am with ya on that crispini..except
scientology now has total control of downtown clearwater where teri is at and thats who is behind her family...and i have reservations about it all..here the scientology has all these kids under their control..and two have died here on their premisses because they would not take them to a doctor or hospital that is right down the street from where these kids died...they don't believe in doctors..or hospitals..so thats where my reservations lie...they are the ones promoting the parents..and the pics they are showing of teri are from a long time ago..think about it..you always see the same pics..never different ones of her...

i dont know..from here i heard the other day it wouldnt matter if her husbvand gave up custody..whoever had custody would have to follow the letter of the law..and law here is ..if someone says they dont want life support ..they must be taken off it...

this is all being pushed by scientology.

during conversations, so he'd look down a little, which was unfortunate when he spoke to women, because he really wasn't really looking THERE, he was just looking away.

And for your VP: :loveya:

Was this guy you, by any chance? You know, in that "My friend has this problem..." kinda way? Or, perhaps, in the "Dear Penthouse, I never thought this would happen to me..." kinda way? Okay, sorry... ;)

222. The Hunter Thompson story about his wife being on the phone w/ him...
... when he shot himself reminded me of being a new operator w/ the phone co., straight out of college, when a call from an elderly lady came in on my board.

She asked me to summon the police, she was being STABBED by an intruder. And she was. Very audibly. It shook me up for a couple of days.

383. I thought his piece on "Jeff Gannon" was very well done.
He hasn't let up on this, unlike all the other media organizations. I particularly appreciated his posting of the pronunciation of the real name of this freak. His excuse for using a pseudonym is that no one can pronounce his actual name. And Keith had the perfect retort. "Olbermann?!"

384. "Gookert" is turning out to be the gift that keeps on giving...
... because everything scandalworthy seems to lead back to that unappetizing fellow.

The softball press confrences before the election, designed to take the heat off Bush on important issues and put Dems on the defensive.

The Valerie Plame case.

Dan Rather's forged TX Guard document.

And most recently, comparisons with "Gannon's" role in the White House daily briefings raised during Dubya's stay in Russia, following charges that Russian reporters friendly to Putin had been "planted" among the press corps in order to protect Putin and challenge Dubya.

I hope this guy sticks to Dubya like a tick.

385. Me, too. As said to my friend, I hope that this is what finally brings
Bush* down, after so many false hopes. There is so much that is "unappetizing" about this guy! How can the MSM ignore him?! Yes, Keith has taken the lead, but there is so much there! The breach of security, at the very least! Not to mention his links to porn sites and hiring out as a prostitute, which has been played way down. This guy is the lowest of the low, yet he has some kind of ties to the Bush* people. That's what has to come out, and I am sure that Keith will report it when he has it, unlike the rest of the MSM who are totally backing away from this story. Why?! It's front page news!
