Opposition warns govt of ‘strong reaction’ if by-polls rigged

LAHORE: Opposition leaders have warned the Punjab government to refrain from rigging the NA-127 by-elections, or face a strong reaction.

While addressing a joint news conference, leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) and Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI), alleged that Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and Punjab Information Technology minister Abdul Aleem Khan with the help of government agencies were conspiring to change the result of at least 25 polling stations.

They claimed that Naseer Ahmad Bhutta, the opposition’s candidate, would win the polls with a great margin despite government officials attempts to buy votes using the national exchequer.

Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Saad Rafiq of the PML-N and MNA Liaqat Baloch of the MMA, Naveed Chaudhry of the PPP and Usman Malik of the PTI addressed the news conference.

They demanded that the announcement of each polling station’s result be made on the spot and opposition candidate’s polling agents be joined at final counting.
