Global Post Election Survey Reveals ‘Disenfranchised’ Overseas Voters

The results of a worldwide survey of US citizens living abroad has highlighted an urgent need to overhaul the existing complex mechanism of overseas voter registration and balloting in favor of a simple-to-use online system.

The 2004 Post Election Survey of overseas voters published today, June 1, 2005, by Overseas Vote Foundation (OVF), a non-partisan organization which aims to improve the electoral experience of Americans living and working outside the United States, reveals that:

a combined total of 43% of the respondents received late ballots or none at all
19% received their ballot after the election had taken place or not at all
24% received their ballots in the period of 2 weeks prior to the election
there is a crisis in confidence: 42% of overseas Americans who voted in the 2004 US elections are not confident that their ballot was counted by election officials

The survey, which sought the views and opinions of approximately 65,000 US citizens across the world, received over 11,000 responses (17 percent response rate). 52 percent of the respondents were ‘first time’ overseas voters and 27 percent indicated that this election was the first time they had ever voted. Voters were not asked about party affiliation or which way they cast their ballot.

My friend who voted from Germany used them to register -- interesting experience he told me about was he talked to OVF about his difficulty getting answers to his Florida registration and the OVF suggested he say he was a republican -- low an behold his 3 hours of previous waiting, forwarding, etc. was transformed into 20 minute completion when he used the r-word!

And AFAIK the military overseas votes have never been explored, even though its been over 6 months now...

Lick of transparency leads to exploitation of the shadows. Lack of accountability leads to corruption.

The overseas vote is RIFE with opportunities for cheating.

3. This topic was big on election websites before the election. There
was a lot of talk about overseas votes being suppressed because they'd mostly go for Kerry, since overseas Americans have to live with foreigners who are really pissed off at Bush.
