Beal is up for re-election. Can something be done?
###Tuesday, July 12, 2005 Editorial from The Logan Daily News Commentary by Mark Samuels, Editor & Publisher
"The turmoil surrounding the county board of elections and its effort to replace former deputy director Sherole Eaton is only going to get more interesting."
"Sure to land on the hot seat is Prosecuting Attorney Larry Beal, who by law must represent the board in any litigation."
"The rub is that Beal is a Democrat, as is his assistant, David Sams, whose legal guidance the panel initially relied upon in terminating Eaton."
"And Eaton is a Democrat."
"And both Democrats on the elections board, Gerald Robinette and Susan Hughes, voted to terminate Eaton."
"Beal barely won re-election in November and can't afford to alienate a single voter in this intraparty food fight if he hopes to continue in office past this term."
"Best bet: He'll opt out, saying it presents a conflict of interest -- and the county will have to spend thousands of dollars on an outside hired gun to battle Eaton and the John Kerry forces."
"Of greater interest to me, though, is Eaton's allegation that the office was used as mission control for Republican Party fund-raising efforts. That's serious stuff, but the charge is blunted somewhat by the apparent fact that the Dems watched without complaint."
"Or did Eaton complain, only to see Prosecutor Beal sweep it under the rug?"
"These are questions people on the street are asking -- and they deserve to be answered."
