The Stalking of Andy Stephenson
Edited on Tue Jul-12-05 08:15 AM by sfexpat2000
This is an account requested by Mark Crispin Miller. And this is a draft, an early one.

But what I hope we can take away from this story is that we are playing for keeps.

* * *

I have lived for the last ten weeks with Andy Stephenson’s cancer. And in the most useless way. I couldn’t take it away, couldn’t relieve him of it, couldn’t mind it for a few hours so he could be freed to do the work he so loved.

Andy was one of the most luminous people I have never met, because we never shared room temperature. I read his posts to a discussion board, then exchanged email with him. Later, when he was casting around for medical care, we had phone contact, increasingly as his situation became more obviously urgent.

And through the unfolding of our friendship, I understood that the being on the other side of the keyboard or the phone line was remarkable, was a gift walking among us. Sometimes a prickly gift or a demanding one but, all gifts have their particular qualities, if only to soften brilliance that laid bare would be blinding for most eyes.

I have heard Andy jubilant and terrified, laughing and sobbing. Playful and petulant. My deepest regret is that I won’t hear him again.

When Andy suspected his ill health was serious, I offered to make calls for him. I have made calls for families unable to find resources for over a decade. The public health care system nearly killed my husband, and when we were given a reprieve, I swore I would work to help anyone to find the care they needed.

I had little real success in finding resources for Andy, except in the sense that we widened the circle of friends who helped us look. One of them struck gold, and was able to get Andy taken on as a patient by a respected doctor at Johns Hopkins. This seems no less than a miracle to us. There are many cancer patients in the world and no matter their net worth, they are not taken on easily by doctors at Johns Hopkins.

That left only the money. Out of state patients must be prepared to pay the full costs of their surgeries in advance. So, a group of Andy’s friends set out to try to raise the funds needed, armed with only love and hope and a very short window to come up with the cash before we were all turned away.

That we did indeed raise $50, 000 in 11 days, in small donations and in many currencies is a measure of how beloved Andy was. None of us had the skill to open wallets, per se. This was for Andy.

And at this point, the story becomes bifurcated. One fork is the progress of love and hope and generosity that he elicited among the progressive community who shook junk drawers and upended sofa cushions and did without one trip to the mall to send in a donation. They made Andy’s surgery possible. And it is true that when I announced to an incredulous employee at Johns Hopkins that we had raised the money, I’m sure she heard me say, we found Monopoly Money and would she accept that? Paypal and Amazon accounts seem not to be used very often by Johns Hopkins clientele.

But the other fork of this story is the profound disturbance it created in the Bush right wing. I didn’t understand this until much later. But, the watchers saw our effort, watched the community response and were inspired with what can only be called hatred. Because only such a reaction could account for the vicious attack that was set into motion.

The first weekend of my fundraiser was without incident, but our jubilation of raising $25K in only one hundred hours must have goaded the Bush right. Before the week was out, the rumors of fraud and malfeasance began. I began to get anonymous email demanding to know Andy’s most personal information. During the second and last weekend of our effort, the contact information I had made available to donors resulted in my email box being spammed with hate mail. I at that point ignored it. It simply never occurred to my that our effort for our friend would become a political death match.

I was in no way prepared for what followed. And, although I have no proof, what followed was a concerted political attack on Andy, on our progressive community, and in specific on our ability to raise funds for our projects as well as, an attack on Andy’s productive work as an elections reform activist and watchdog.

What followed was a coordinated effort to block Andy’s medical care or his benefit from the medical care we could secure for him. In specific, the Bush right had its agents make small donations so they could then call Paypal with allegations of fraud that froze Andy’s account. They also called Paypal, misrepresenting themselves as the hospital to “verify” that this effort was a scam.

And it got more vicious from there. Due to the frozen funds and the confusion it caused us all, Andy’s surgery date was cancelled by Johns Hopkins. It was with great difficulty that we were able to persuade the doctor to be put Andy back into the surgical rotation. That cost him two weeks while he suffered from the most aggressive, invasive form of cancer.

The smears and the rumors were seeded all over the internet, to many sites. Ill, on hold waiting for his surgery, Andy and the rest of us cast about trying to answer questions that were more often simply calculated accusations meant to discredit us all, meant to make Andy’s health care as difficult as possible.

Andy called me one day, happy because he’d been given a new date. Then again, because they’d moved the date up. He was terrified, sobbing and I was caught flatfooted. Torn between trying to mind Andy’s care and trying to stop or answer the horrible accusations being sown all over our community, I had very little to offer his terror, dealing with my own.

After Andy was admitted to the hospital, the rumors turned into threats. A bounty was offered by the Bush right for anyone who could sneak into his hospital room. It was said he was getting a face lift. A telegram was sent just to see if it could be successfully delivered. The harassment was nonstop. And we tried to shield Andy from it, with less success than we would have liked.

A day or so after his surgery, Andy called me from his bed in ICU. I picked up the phone and he began to sing to me, “Come out, come out, wherever you are.” I started crying. And when we hung up, I offered that bit of good news to our on line progressive community at the Democratic Underground. Immediately, the opposition took that as evidence that Andy was not in fact recovering from a surgical marathon. And this was their pattern. Every specific I offered to comfort the community was taken up by Andy’s stalkers and used as evident that we were frauds.

Andy left the hospital and spent two weeks recovering at a friend’s house, learning how to eat again, learning how to move, weaning himself from the morphine that he’d needed post surgery. During this time, one of his supporters in Baltimore had her car vandalized – a message was sent. Shortly after he left to return to Seattle, his second East Coast hostess was stalked to her home and watched as someone tried to open her front door. His supporters everywhere were systematically intimidated and all the while, they tried to keep it from Andy.

Andy then went back home to Seattle, looking forward to a medical course of chemotherapy and radiation. Once he arrived, he found that an anonymous tipster had managed to get his Medicaid shut down. It took us two weeks to get him back in the system. Andy had anaplastic pancreatic cancer and was again forced to wait weeks for follow up care.

By this time, Andy’s stalkers had set up a website. It purported to be concerned that the funds for his surgery were raised fraudulently. Thankfully by this time, Andy spent very time on line. But it wore on his core advocates who were repeatedly attacked, defamed and baited.

We were threatened with everything from the FBI to the Washington State Attorney General. And of course, because our first concern was Andy, his attitude and his care, our response had to be measured or none. On a good day, we didn’t want Andy logging in and reading that he would soon be visited by federal agents to answer for the mythical hundreds of thousands of dollars we’d supposedly raised.

As late as week before Andy died, we couldn’t keep the poisonous campaign from him. He felt well enough to log into to his email and found a multipage denunciation, supposedly being filed with his state’s attorney general. He called me, not so much in a panic. Panic was no longer a speed Andy had. He called me in despair, because he could no longer fight the barrage of hatred being leveled at him. I don’t remember what I said to him but I hope it helped for a moment.

The attack from the Bush right never paused, not even through the agony of Andy’s last days. Not at all. Even the fact of his death is being disputed. Two days after his passing, his advocates are still being harassed, still receiving anonymous hate calls, “It was a scam.” The friend planning his service was visited by two men impersonating sheriffs on the morning after Andy passed. They were there to ask about fraud, they said.

Andy’s physical death has not stopped the attack, has not slowed the hatred, has not stemmed the steady stream of intimidation.

But, we’re not afraid. And we take up Andy’s work to secure our elections in his honor and in your face.

Have you talked to a lawyer? It seems like there could be some ways to verify some of the things that happened.

was scramble to keep Andy cared for. And they made that as hard as possible. They pretty much made sure he couldn't benefit from his care, too.

28. What they did looks like -a civil rights violation.
This was an organized obstruction of a person's rights to life-saving medical care. RICO statutes broken? I don't know, but the results of their malfeasance should result in at the very least a civil lawsuit by the family. An investigation should be done by the appropriate authorities asap.

Thanks for all you and others have done for Andy.

To me it simple - what they did was murder. They murdered Andy by denying him the care he needed when he needed it the most.

142. what about involuntary manslaughter?
this is from findlaw.com

"Manslaughter: Involuntary
Involuntary manslaughter usually refers to an unintentional killing that results from recklessness or criminal negligence, or from an unlawful act that is a misdemeanor or low-level felony (such as DUI). The usual distinction from voluntary manslaughter is that involuntary manslaughter (sometimes called "criminally negligent homicide") is a crime in which the victim's death is unintended.

For example, Dan comes home to find his wife in bed with Victor. Distraught, Dan heads to a local bar to drown his sorrows. After having five drinks, Dan jumps into his car and drives down the street at twice the posted speed limit, accidentally hitting and killing a pedestrian."

365. May have a good case for wrongful death
wrongful death
n.

A death caused by the negligent, willful, or wrongful act, neglect, omission, or default of another

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrongful_death
wrongful death claim

Wrongful death is a claim in tort against a person who can be held liable for a death. The claim is brought in a civil action, usually by close relatives. Unlike criminal law, private parties may bring the suit. The defendant has fewer due process and Constitutional protections such as immunity or the right to refuse to give testimony. The standard of proof is typically preponderance of the evidence as opposed to clear and convincing or beyond a reasonable doubt. For all the above reasons, it is often easier for a family to seek retribution against someone for wrongful death in tort than a proper criminal law conviction. It should be noted, however, that the two actions are not mutually exclusive; a person may be prosecuted criminally for causing a person's death (whether in the form of murder, manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, or some other theory) and that person can also be sued civilly in a wrongful death action.

As a technical legal matter, a wrongful death claim is not a tort claim. In most, if not all states in the United States, there was no common law right to recover civil damages for the wrongful death of a person. However, now the states have each enacted statutes to correct this deficiency in the law so that there is a right to such recovery. It is true that the issue of liability will be determined by the tort law of a given state, but this is only because the statute incorporates the tort law as the law of liability. For this reason, a wrongful death claim does share much in common with a tort claim, but it is still grounded in statute; not common law tort.

12. Thank you so much...
for all you've done and all you've endured. I told Will on his revenge thread that if the other side had confined their hatred to writing slimy crap on their websites I would leave them be. If the extent of their hatred had simply been confined to hate email and phone calls, maybe they should just be left to stew in their hatred. But they moved their evil into the real world and interfered with someone's life and for that I think they deserve legal sanction. They think they belong to the responsibility party so they should take responsibility for what they've done. I had no idea how bad it was (and still is) but if they are not sanctioned they will do this again. Please let me know if there is anything I can do.

I don't in any way want to claim this as mine.

But, I needed to write this because I owe it to Andy and because it will not be the last time one of us is picked off and hounded -- as they tried to do to Andy.

That we made a circle around him stopped them, infuriated and surprised them.

because they don't understand the concept of a truly loving community. They think we are godless and evil so the support that coalesced around Andy collided with their world view.
I know there were many who were directly involved but I appreciate your clear narrative of the situation. I also appreciated your personal care with each donation.

202. quote
First, Beth, many thanks for being a wonderful friend and advocate for Andy. Second, thank you for writing about, and therefore having to relive, this disgusting saga of being targeted like this.

I am reminded of a quote.

The American Indian tribes were tragically unable to understand the European invaders. Kurt Vonnegut described this acidly in his classic "Breakfast of Champions":

"The chief weapon of the sea pirates was their capacity to astonish. No one could believe, until it was much too late, just how heartless and greedy they were."

Viewed in the context of

8 the outing of Joe Wilson's wife, an undercover operative attempting to contain nuclear proliferation,

8 the highly suspicious crash of Paul Wellstone's plane

8 the STILL unsolved anthrax attacks against two US Senators (top leadership of the Democratic party, fall, 2001)

8 AND, of course, stolen elections,

this is another in a long line of ruthless acts against democracy, against the Constitution, and against the American people.

We need to understand that their only rule is to win.

But, as we fight them, we must be sure not to become them.

216. I'm not sure what I can do personally, but
I think we are all here to help keep that well of patience and strength refreshed.

This post particularly touched me--maybe because I'm not particularly gifted with patience, but am so grateful to know you are.

This quote from your OP struck me too:"When Andy suspected his ill health was serious, I offered to make calls for him. I have made calls for families unable to find resources for over a decade. The public health care system nearly killed my husband, and when we were given a reprieve, I swore I would work to help anyone to find the care they needed."

What a stark contrast to the self righteous, "morally superior" idiots, applauding themselves for their callousness, dressing it in costumes of sensibility and self-sufficiency, who think dressing for church and parading their false face of propriety constitutes proof of religious correctness, while they ignore and twist their so-called savior's teachings of honesty, community and inter-dependence.

27. I swear on my sons heads, this isn't about me. It's about
the reaction we can expect when we get good and effective.

Andy knew this,in a way. But he was so full of love for people, he didn't or wouldn't keep it in mind.

We need to mind what just happened. So it will never happen again.

20. Thanks. I hope it was freeing for you to get this written down
It's been a horrible ordeal.

Another DUer and I were talking about this last night and we wondered if, since the attacks were a coordinated effort, they were being financially backed by someone. How could so much effort be put into destroying someone on a whim? No, too much effort was put into it to be merely a hobby.

We also agreed on the obvious. There is a difference between us and them. We work for peace, justice and accountability and transparency in government. They work to spread hate and keep the liars in power at any cost. Any cost. After all, they were fighting election justice when they focused on Andy.

We now have a clearer picture of what we are up against. But we are stronger than they are. Truth and positive ideals will win. NGU.

35. Nope. Election reform is dangerous business.
I was working for Kathy Dopp (uscountvotes.org) in CO living with my mum. She lives at the end of this long road, a dead end in the middle of nowhere. One day we got followed home by this guy, and then a few minutes later, when my mom came out, there was this other guy photographing our house, and when he saw my mom, he took off running. It was really wierd. I stopped working for Kathy for other reasons, and it seemed to go away. But its still wierd.

21. Thank you Elizabeth
the world needs a whole lot more like you and a whole lot less of "them".

We live in a world full of chronically angry people; where borderline personality disorder and a gradual decay into more profound antisocial (sociopathic) behaviors is considered acceptable, and moreover, a hallmark of the right wing.

Hatred, bigotry, extremism - those are the things we fight against and at the end of the day you sometimes the only reward we have is knowing that we did our very best to do the right thing "in spite of all aridity and disenchantment".

Take some strength from us; don't let the world make you bitter. There will always be assholes who want everyone to be as unhappy with life as they are in their own lives, and when we let them take away our joy, they've won.

Keep up the good fight sister - we've got your back.

I think at this stage a private investigator is needed to get to the bottom of this. If this story is correct, somebody needs to be in jail.

Somebody should set up a fund for the PI, it seems we wouldn't have much problem finding the money.

86. For me, the worst part is, this IS A POLITICAL STORY
Do you think if Andy was a teacher or a dentist, the right wing would have chosen him -- to spend all that enery and all that attention, all that effort on?

No. He was working to make our vote safe. He was a political target.

For us, it is hard to know that; for me, it is hard to know that.

But let's see the big picture: Andy was a political target and he was dealt with in the same way the American right wing deals with their adversaries.

We need to learn this, as terrible a lesson as it is.

Package it as a human tradegy story. Paint the stalker as well political nutcases crossing the line here.
The natural process of course is that Andy quest get highlighted.
Framing the issue as Republicans versus Democrats just wont get anywhere.

More take back if story get highlighted in main papers all over US
Andy and his work becomes known. Politcal nutcases get blacklist.
Call to rein in all this hate creation. Maybe a few show hosts pants get set on fire. People waking up and realizing that maybe this has gone a bit too far. Rove War on Iraq all the corruption lies and THEN THIS. This can get people real angry.

Andy dead is a statement of how far US values has sunken. DRIVE THIS HOME. This is a facts. People need to wake up to all this division whic is creating so many monster.

we knew this from selection 2000 and suspected it in some of the elections in 2002.....an increasting number suspect it in election 2004

some (an increasing group) at least wonder about 9-11......and Paul Wellstone

but a private individual???? sure, he's working for election reform, but seriously, how many in the US have ever even heard of Andy???......but he was fighting against the destruction of the US.......and that is something that simply cannot be allowed to go unpunished

these vermin went to prevent Andy from his treatment. I am sobbing again. Peace and love to all of those who tried to protect Andy from this horror, to their personal peril. I have never seen such blind hatred in my lifetime, by my own countrymen.

Oh Andy-may you rest in peace. We shall forge forward regardless of the craven, evil people who only know bile and hatred. They may try to kill us, but we are too numerous and too strong. We have love on our side, which is more powerful than any self destructive hatred. I am just so sorry that Andy had to pay the ultimate price.

Pride (In The Name Of Love)"

One man come in the name of love
One man come and go
One man come, he to justify
One man to overthrow

In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love

One man caught on a barbed wire fence
One man he resist
One man washed on an empty beach.
One man betrayed with a kiss

In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love

(nobody like you...)

Early morning, April 4
Shot rings out in the Memphis sky
Free at last, they took your life
They could not take your pride

In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love...

These "people" are nothing but a careless bunch of aspiring fascists. I never met Andy and I do not really post here a whole lot, but I was glad to donate $100 for his surgery, even though I do not make much money. Andy could have spent his life just working and making a living, but instead, he decided to warn people about the paperless voting machines that endanger the very thing that our democracy is based on, representation.

Contrast that with his detractors, who spent all their energy trying to destroy a wonderful man. They are right about one thing, though. Andy Stephenson is still alive. He is alive in all of us who have followed his example of trying to save our democracy and our freedoms, and he will be alive to all of those who will ensure that future generations have those freedoms . As far as I am concerned he was a true patriot in every sense of the word.

I wish Will Pitt and others the best of luck in ensuring that these jackasses will get their just desserts. Because, frankly, I am sick and tired of their shit.

272. what Blackwell said.
I did meet Andy. By accident we both arrived about 2 hours too early 4 a DU get-together in DC during the electoral college voting. I feel so lucky 2 have met him and had that time. We had a great extended conversation about all things political. The next day he appeared in LaFayette Park w/ that crazy Peruvian woven cap on upside down; then he was at a DU get together that night. He was not feeling 100% then, citing vague discomfort; he looked exhausted.

I am thoroughly disgusted and horrified at the lengths these kraven kriminals have gone 2 destroy Andy; because let there B no doubt, that WAS their intent from the beginning. I can only imagine how shallow and utterly devoid of meaning their lives must B because they embrace and R proud 2 own this destruction. They would B publically celebrating but I'm certain someone pointed out this would actually alienate the very people they have duped.

Beth, and all of U who protected, comforted and assisted Andy, you R all blessed and protected because of your gracious acts.

Some things are so evil, they just kind of make your brain go blank with incomprehension. Harassing a dying man and trying to deny him medical treatment because you disagree with his politics goes under that heading. Just pure, unadulterated evil.

If they really believed that this was fraud, they would be happy. Yeah! Liberals on the DU being robbed by one of their own! They would be doing the happy dance, not trying to interfere with treatment. These are sick individuals.

66. They have chosen the path to their own
destruction. Because in doing what they did to Andy, to you, and to all of us who came to love HIM- and each other in a deeper way, and binding us together for what is all that really EVER matters-

They (all that worked against the 'goodness and the compassion) exposed how desperately evil, lost, materialistic, and quite sadly ANTI-Life, ANTI-moral, and ANTI-free so many who cry so loudly for 'their cause' really are.

i AM sorry that people chose to make Andy's (and so many other committed, loving, and devoted peoples lives- people who show how GOOD human'kind' actually can be) so extra difficult, and painful.
But (and excuse me if this doesn't come out right) they created and are still creating a Martyr- a 'larger than life' person, (which he was) and diminishing themselves in the process-

Andy's having the 'last laugh'- and still working in and through ALL who he left behind- even the 'bad guys'-

i wish i could have met him in person- i know some day i will.

peace to all-

Elizabeth, that was a beautiful, eye-opening account, and tribute.
thank you for that- and for your gifts.

make no mistake--this is not a strange anomoly among the right wing, this is how they always operate.

Cases in point--

FBI attacks on civil rights workers as early as 1920. Marcus Garvey was imprisoned on trumped up charges of mail fraud for using, in a newspaper ad, a picture of ship he was buying but had not yet closed on. Lead investigator was J. Edgar Hoover.

Joe McCarthy & Roy Cohn, the House UnAmerican Activities Committee, and the John Birch Society sliming and defaming the left with association of communism. The day Kennedy was shot in Dallas, handbills were circulated with JFK's face on them that said "Wanted for Treason."

White Concerned Citizens' Councils (CCC), barely legal versions of the KKK meant to intimidate and harass blacks and civil rights workers.

Lee Atwater and Roger Ailes (now at Fox News) in the Reagan/Bush White House who brought us Michael Dukkais = Willie Horton, black murderer and rapist. They also engineered that release of our embassy hostages in Iran, but only AFTER the election so as to do maximum damage to Carter.

Bush's men in Florida (including John Bolton) who shouted down and physically ran people out of their offices when they tried to do a full recount.

Eight years of Whitewater, Travelgate, Vince Foster, WH "vandalism" slime lies against the Clinton's, none of which was true or even had merit.

Karl Rove's outing of Valerie Plame, putting her and all her contacts in danger.

The Swifties despicable lies and slander against a real war hero, John Kerry, winner of the silver star, bronze star with V for Valor, and three purple hearts.

The horrible attacks on Teri Schiavo's husband, the "adulterate, murdering beast who tried to kill his wife, didn't call 911 in time, and now wants to finish the job."

The new Ed Klein book on Hillary Clinton in which the author claims that Chelsea was conceived only after Bill raped her mother and that Hillary is a lesbian. Various commentators has proven that the book is chock-a-block with errors, distortions and outright lies.

And those are just the examples I can come up with without thinking about it.

111. Conspiracy nut... until it happens to you
Can I say this now with out being sent a tinfoil hat? In 1993 after a Congressional hearing started by Sen Kennedy to allow a veterinarian relative talk about what Lyme Disease was doing to farm animals but what turned into a hearing on Lyme Disease in humans Lyme became a "liberal" disease. Dr Burascano discredited the CDC's "expert" as to the severity and scope of the emerging disease in this country.

The CDC is military. Those working there have US military commissions.
Emerging diseases are now classified as "national security risks" by law. Lyme Disease became one of 34 bioterrirsm agents on a list by the feds. We were no longer public health we were national security.

The Forschners who started LDF because they lost a son to gestational lyme were harassed constantly. Their offices were broken into and their computers stolen. Their well in CT was poisoned.

The first director of the CDC Lyme Disease was put on "desk duty" for improprieties regarding his handling of Lyme Disease but still would attend rallies and events staring, glaring. The lie that patients were stalking Dr Steere who completely denied his work before 1993 with Lyme to perpetuate the lie that Lyme is easily detected and cured and that patients who claim otherwise are mental cases. They were so successful that Mayo Clinic will not even start treatment for the Lyme they find and anyone who suggests it is sent to psychiatric. They had a case of a young woman who had gone east for treatment but who ran out of money or got to sick to continue. When she became confused, often happens in Lyme, her family took her to their doctor who hospitalized her in Iowa and the hospital sent her to Mayo clinic. She STILL had the pic line that was inserted for treatment out east. Mayo had her for two days doing tests but did not remove the line that was not being used which is a severe threat for infection. She fell shattering the tip of the pick line which went into her heart and killed her. Mayo wrote published the incident calling it "a death due to improper treatment for Lyme Disease."

There were treatment trials here before 1993 but at that time a warning was sent through the HMO's that doctors should be finding Chronic Fatigue, not lyme. The Infectious Disease doctor connected with a leading hospital who had a thriving AIDS practice and who was doing clinical research was targeted by the state medical board. All they found was a couple paperwork errors but his punishment was that he had to cease and desist all work with Lyme patients. All 200+ of us and he was afraid to tell us what had happened and so he handled it badly and we did not know the full story until years later. I don't think he thought it could happen here. 17 doctors in NY are on a target list by the NY OPMC. Pataki vetoed an OPMC reform bill last year protecting patients but giving doctors due process. Right now they don't know the nature of the complaint or who is complaining and they were going on fishing expeditions in these doctors records looking for anything to nail them on. Try defending yourself that way.

The most crystallizing case among the hundreds I have have personally heard of was a longtime Support Group member who found herself in a divorce with her Sr PGA hubbie and two girls. She knew she needed to be as healthy as she could and like most of us had been merely staying alive but terribly debilitated. After striking out with regular doctors she found a psychiatrist at the U of MN who agreed to work with Columbia Medical Center's Lyme clinic. She was supposed to get a pic line inserted to deliver IV antibiotics for a time. When she got to the hospital she was ambushed by people at the U's infectious disease clinic and put on an involuntary psychiatric hold. While there a nurse took her aside and asked her what was going on because tests that were being done were not in any way part of standard care for patients on that floor. When she got out her psychiatrist had a rented car waiting for her and she fled to NY where she got intensive treatment over the next year. Legally took $75,000 to take care of getting her record cleared so she could see her girls here. That was not money for the divorce only money to clear her name following the wrongful psychiatric hold.

We held one state meeting in Hinkley. The keynote speaker had a conflict and the day was changed but only those who had signed up were told of the change. The weekend we were there they had a massive outbreak of ecoli from their water tower (a door had somehow been left open to bird droppings was the story) sickened a lot of people there. It would have killed some and weakened the rest of us at the conference. I could not in good conscience set up another such meeting.

I blame the CIA culture and their bottomless funding from the GOV and corporations. Nobody is ever held responsible and the victims are labeled as conspiracy nuts.

I know who it is that are disrupting meaningful progress with Lyme Disease. They kill people. We don't. How do we effectively fight them with their vast anonymous resources?

75. And there is still a lot more to this story that you could have told
such as the wide number of supporters that were harassed, frightened and threatened. And the names that were uncovered that were attached to particular parts of the story. It really all sounds criminal.....and probably could be prosecuted.

It's astonishing the lengths these Republican haters went to. I'm a firm believer that when we leave this earth we will each get to feel all the love and the hate that we have been personally responsible for. **JUDGEMENT DAY** So Andy is feeling much love now. And the detractor bastards will go through much hell when they pass on. Vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord. That's my consolation to this horrendously heinous story of Republican hate.

77. God, Beth
I knew from what I read here that it was bad. But I think many of us didn't recognize HOW bad.

Fact is, it's hard to conceive of people who are so self-justified that they can do virtually any thing and still look at themselves in the mirror. Would that they were capable of shame. But that would presuppose that they had not seared their hearts and their consciences with ever more violent and malevolent scheming, fooling themselves that somehow their God would approve, that He would find them faithful tools of the judgement and the vengeance that He said belonged to Him.

They have convinced themselves that we, over here, we DUers are evil minions of the devil- that they are justified in whatever action they may take against us. They believe this even as they attempt to demean and belittle our efforts to regain the right to be recognized as citizens in our own country, to have our voices heard in OUR democracy. They have lost their souls, and they have lost their way. As angry as I am about what they did to Andy - which I fear is but a reflection of what they would do to all of us given the opportunity - I sincerely hope that their God can find more mercy within Himself for them, than they have had for others.

Now, I'm not a Christian. But I learned a long time ago that there's an order to things...that what "goes 'round, comes 'round". I also learned that when we are met with such adversity as these people love to inflict, there is something to be gleaned - some glimmer of a "lesson" that we can take away and make ourselves lighter, stronger, braver....and maybe more loving, forgiving.

These may not be the words we want to hear today. Today we may want - NEED! - to hear how angry and sad we are to have such light as Andy taken from us by actions as callous and calculating as those you described. But ultimately we will need to revisit this evil and make sense of it. I pray that when the final examination is done, we are found better than those who did these things to our dear one, to you, and whether by extension or by deed - to all of us.

Take a minute to read Jim Lobe's early article exposing the Leo Straussian philosophy.

It totally unmasks the tenets of many of the people in the Bush administration, including purportedly Paul Wolfowitz and Stephen Cambone.

Basically, power and lying are fine, as long as you win. Sort of updated Machiavelli. They have absolutely no belief in democracy.

Lee Atwater was a big fan of Machiavelli, and so is Karl Rove.

Strong Must Rule the Weak, said Neo-Cons' Muse

by Jim Lobe
Inter Press
Thursday 08 May 2003

http://www.truthout.org/docs_03/050903I.shtml

...

In his article, {Seymour} Hersh wrote that {Leo} Strauss believed the world to be a place where ''isolated liberal democracies live in constant danger from hostile elements abroad'', and where policy advisers may have to deceive their own publics and even their rulers in order to protect their countries. Shadia Drury, author of 1999's 'Leo Strauss and the American Right', says Hersh is right on the second count but dead wrong on the first. ''Strauss was neither a liberal nor a democrat,'' she said in a telephone interview from her office at the University of Calgary in Canada. ''Perpetual deception of the citizens by those in power is critical (in Strauss's view) because they need to be led, and they need strong rulers to tell them what's good for them.''

...

Like Plato, Strauss taught that within societies, ''some are fit to lead, and others to be led'', according to Drury. But, unlike Plato, who believed that leaders had to be people with such high moral standards that they could resist the temptations of power, Strauss thought that "those who are fit to rule are those who realize there is no morality and that there is only one natural right, the right of the superior to rule over the inferior." ...''Secular society in their view is the worst possible thing'', because it leads to individualism, liberalism and relativism, precisely those traits that might encourage dissent, which in turn could dangerously weaken society's ability to cope with external threats. ''You want a crowd that you can manipulate like putty,'' according to Drury.

Strauss was also strongly influenced by Thomas Hobbes. Like Hobbes, he thought the fundamental aggressiveness of human nature could be restrained only through a powerful state based on nationalism. "Because mankind is intrinsically wicked, he has to be governed," he once wrote. "Such governance can only be established, however, when men are united - and they can only be united against other people."

"Strauss thinks that a political order can be stable only if it is united by an external threat," Drury wrote in her book. "Following Machiavelli, he maintains that if no external threat exists, then one has to be manufactured. Had he lived to see the collapse of the Soviet Union, he would have been deeply troubled because the collapse of the 'evil empire' poses a threat to America's inner stability." "In Strauss' view, you have to fight all the time (to survive)," said Drury. "In that respect, it's very Spartan. Peace leads to decadence. Perpetual war, not perpetual peace, is what Straussians believe in." Such views naturally lead to an "aggressive, belligerent foreign policy," she added.

You don't know me, I just clicked on the thread you titled to nay-sayers. Thought it was going to be something else. As soon as I realized what the images were I backed out (just cause I don't need to see em and really feel for your privacy in this matter).

But yeah, I never doubted you. Really hope that you beat that tumor and get better ok. Try not to let trolls get to ya, you have alot more folks out there pulling for you.

Joel

I want to do something, I've thought about taking what people have written about Andy and what he had to go through and send it to my Senator (Boxer) and ask what can be done.

Personally, I'd like some alone time with the people who did that to Andy still, but I think thats the soldier in me that mourns the loss of a buddy.

103. sfexpat, thank you for posting.
I'm still in shock that he's gone. And you're right. We will take up Andy's work and honor him in everything we do to fix our elections/health care in this country.

I noticed a couple typos that you may want to correct before you email it to MCM:

1. By this time, Andy’s stalkers had set up a website. It purported to be concerned that the funds for his surgery were raised fraudulently. Thankfully by this time, Andy spent very time on line. But it wore on his core advocates who were repeatedly attacked, defamed and baited.

Again, thank you for everything you did/are doing for Andy.

<snip>Washington Hate Crimes Law

Sexual orientation protected? Yes

Washington law criminalizes "malicious harassment" and violence against individuals because of their sexual orientation. Rev. Code Wash. (ARCW) § 9A.36.080 (2002). <snip>

The more they are charged with, the more they will have to spend on lawyers to defend themselves. Their activities certainly were malicious harassment.

112. It's people like you-
That make me proud to be associated with the progressive, liberal cause.

It's people like them that show how shallow, pathetic, and un-American their politics are.

I'd really shine a spotlight on them with your letter. Post links to the websites and detail comments/sctreen names of those that thought this was such great cause....stopping a fellow human being from getting the critical care he needed.

The difference between us and them is rather simple. If one of their own came down with a life threatening illness, none of us would post vile screeds wishing them death. We wouldn't set up a website to question the veracity of their medical condition.

We know why they chose Andy. He was an outspoken gay person who was fighting for election transparency. In short, he was everything they hated about him and us.

One thing I really need to know regards the cancellation of the first surgery. Could you get Johns Hopkins to make a statement? Paypal? This is a really central thing. If paypal froze funds, his family may have a very big lawsuit. The lawsuit would raise the profile of this case.

But, the dirty tricks had everyone so upset, no doubt we all dealt with it less effectively than we could have.

And that may be the least of it.

My duty to Ted and the rest of the family right now is to respect the grief we share.

My obligation to those of us still dealing with the attack -- and to those of you who will suffer a similar attack in the future is to try to reveal it, so we can know and plan.

I am so sorry that you and Andy's loved ones are going through this. It is consoling that there are so many more of us than them. For them to have such evil in their hearts is well.........it's more than I can comprehend.

If I can help please let me know.

125. Beth is right to post this. I WAS THERE and IT WAS BAD.
Edited on Tue Jul-12-05 11:45 AM by demodonkey

Good for you Beth, for getting the truth out. It WAS and IS awful, people.

I was in Baltimore with Andy and Ted in Johns Hopkins for the surgery. I stayed with Miss Waverly in the Dust Bunny Palace. I can say first-hand that these attackers caused an unbelievable amount of hurt to Andy, his family, and his friends. It was terrible mental anguish and harassment. To a person facing the huge surgical ordeal and subsequent treatment that Andy did, this was just about as good as sticking a knife in his back and giving it about a half-dozen good twists.

Without going into details that the Freepers and Scumdies who no doubt will read this can use to mock Andy and cause more pain, just everyone please know that there is simply no way that having to deal with this didn't cost Andy physically. He was an incredibly strong person, but there is only so much anyone can take. God bless him, he tried to laugh about it (even some posts on here where he has "fun" with the crazy accusations they were making about him), but he HURT.

And those of us who loved him, and saw the whole thing from the inside, hurt too in a million ways. For example it was damn sickening to see Photoshopped pictures of Andy chained up in a prison uniform (supposedly in jail for scamming money when he had no illness), when you just saw Andy that day in real life chained up to a zillion IV tubes in the Johns Hopkins Cancer Ward ICU. For example it was pretty horrible lay your eyes on the 18" hole in your friend's chest where they ripped cancer out of him the size of a golf ball, and then to go home and read on some website that he's "really" sunning himself on the beach somewhere in Aruba drinking Pina Coladas.

And nowhere to vent, really. That's how we felt. Imagine how ANDY felt.

Andy, we all love you and we will ALWAYS WILL KNOW THE TRUTH.

Marybeth

It's just that, it's been apparent to me for some time that this wasn't some silly grabass with "freeper". Andy was targeted, his advocates were, and so was DU because we were here.

Remember, they attack our strengths?

And it only looks like Curly, Larry and Moe are behind this. But, they have handlers, whether they realize it or not.

It's enough that we do.

I'm criticizing DUers who had normal, legit questions. I've answered plenty of them by PM, in the fund raising threads, on the phone.

Nothing like that. The huge difference between a DUer who has a concern, who might not like me or who might have been ticked off for some reason and the destructive campaign I'm talking about is like night and day. DUers with questions wanted answers.

Those other people wanted to divide, to defame, to destroy. They just keep claiming they wanted answers. They wanted no such thing.

I hope that's very clear to you all.

And I thank you for listening because it's been tough to hold all of this, even as a member of a group of advocates - a tough crowd that nevertheless felt their distance from you all as we tried to juggle what was best, what was kind or useful for everyone, what was respectful to both Andy and to DU.

Thank you, DUers.

168. A burning fury!
I didn't know Andy and I had no idea what was going on at the time. someone was gravely ill, DUers were raising money (I'm cautious by nature having been scammed in the past). Ther ewas joy as money rolled in, then came the doubt and the accusations and the anger. Was this a scam? Was Andy really as sick as he claimed?

Yes, obviously Andy was gravely ill. Until Andy's death I was in the dark about the whole thing.

Now the truth is coming out and it is so disgusting, so sickening that I can barely hold in my rage! Human beings, motivated entirely by a hatred of the left, Andy in specific, would stoop so fuckin' low that they would go to ANY length to deny Andy life-saving medical treatment because of his politics.

This is ugly beyond belief. This needs to be researched, the guilty must be identified, and it all needs to be written up and publicised as widely as possible. We are on the verge of war. The right is about to go down in flames. Americans are catching on to their lies and bullying, and are turning away in disgust. The hard core RWers are not going to take this lying down. We can expect vitriol, possibly violence. I will not back down, nor will any of you, I'm sure. America is going to get a major lesson in what fascist conservatives are really like.

250. You know
it's funny, I got scammed by BBV - sent them a bit of money. Then I watched what came down and I saw very clearly who was the bad guy and who was the good guy in that one. So, when it came to contributing to Andy's cause, I never had any doubt at all. I didn't know the real life person but I knew his mettle, his integrity.

I don't understand why they would do this. Was it just hatred? And if so, why would they hate Andy?

Or, were they afraid of him because they thought he had the potential to destroy them?

175. It's probably not time for this idea --
-- but you have probably had it. Write it all down as a story, too, so someday a film or a play can be based on it. It's so incredibly unbelievable and outrageous. He's a martyr, and people need to know about him. That way, they would. Since the media no longer do their job.

It just needs to be a really, really good one.

It is so astonishing, people who didn't know about it might never believe it....

Gee, I lived in a time when things like this happened. Will my grandchildren believe me? Or will our country be gone?

Election fraud, covert ops, legalized torture. They would like to kill us all. But they can't. Mostly because, though they are cunning, they are also the lesser. It always shows in the end.
On second thought -- I guess we don't know for sure anymore.

Andy was targeted because he was exposing election fraud. His advocates where targeted because they supported him. DU is always targeted because of our strength in numbers and in collaboration.

Let's be very clear so we can be effective.

I had absolutely NO idea that their sickness had permeated so many lives. They are truly pathological.

Obviously, this is a concerted effort. Someone was coordinating the "sheriffs" who showed up, the cutting off of Andy's Medicaid and the harassment incidents that Andy's supporters endured.

I hope to God, that all of you are carrying around video recorders and camera phones. I'd like to see a shot of those "sheriffs".

This truly is unbelievable--the actions of psychopaths.

I'm sorry Elizabeth--for the turmoil you and others have endured.

212. Many years ago
Edited on Tue Jul-12-05 08:47 PM by NoBushSpokenHere
a relative of mine predicted a revolution would happen here in the States. He asked me at the time, "What side would you be on, if it were to happen" I thought for a bit, thinking he was referring to the militia against the government and replied, "I suppose the government because they are the ones with the big guns" explaining that our government would bring down any revolutionary group quickly. I added, "But, I guess until that time comes, no one really knows what they would do." He said, "There will come a day when you will have to make that decision" I asked, "What side would you be on?" He didn't give me an answer.

He died a few years after that conversation. Throughout these past four years, I have often recalled the talk we had that hot, summer day. My parents taught me to always stand up for what I believe in. I was always taught to fight for my rights and the rights of my fellowman. If a revolution were to happen, we would not stand a chance against the big guns. But, I have to do what I know is right, what I was taught from the time I was old enough to remember, I have to stand up for what I believe in.

Our rights to vote and have that vote counted is a right I believe in. Our rights to investigate our government, is a right I believe in. Our rights to have a fair and unbiased media, is a right I believe in. Our rights to have a government FOR AND BY THE PEOPLE is a right I believe in.

I will continue to stand, I will continue to fight for those rights I believe in. Our democracy may fold but a new and brighter form of government will emerge from the ashes.

I ask you all this, "If we do not stand, if we do not fight, if corporations continue to control our country, would you want to live in this country?" Not I. Our fight is worth fighting. Let's let what happened to Andy give us more strength, more vigor, more determination.

Edited for spelling.

you and the people who were on the front lines through this.

I feel like vomiting after reading this. Seriously, I feel literally sick to my stomach.

Minions, that's what they truly are.

I for one am grateful that somehow, I have the good karma to be able to tell light from dark, to fairly consistently do the right thing. Its a choice we are all confronted with daily, and every positive action is a training towards further positive action. But that choice is always there, and the shallow, the dark, the lie is easy sometimes.

I wonder if any more of them will see this horrible story clearly and take the opportunity to open their eyes, and step away from the ugliness? I pray every day for people to wake up.

means to be a progressive! The ideology of these people stops at nothing. John Gibson on Fox today stated that Rove should be given a "medal" for outing Plame! This kind of behavior is being sanctified and I fear Andy and those who helped him are only a few of the victims of this hate. May God forgive them for I do not believe I can. hello, i am new to DU, and unfortunately didn't know Andy (it sounds like he was a big personality with an even bigger heart). i'm sorry for the way he passed and that his last days weren't as optimum as they could have been (which i realize is putting it mildly).

it is a sickening shame when adult people behave like sheer barbarians, such as his enemies did. i believe in karma, and/or reaping what you sow, so i'll hold fast to the knowledge that their efforts will be returned to them somehow, some way, blow for blow.

however, having said that, have you looked into legal action? i haven't read through all the replies (there are so many), therefore i'm not sure if this has been broached, but i'm wondering if something can't be done. i'm not sure how many attorneys frequent these boards, but perhaps someone would know. some sort of civil action seems justifiable to me; knowing that a good man's necessary surgery was delayed, as was his ability to be comfortable in his last days---this is egregious and sinister, and the people responsible should be held accountable with, at the very least, their checkbooks.

i hate to get into name-calling because i think it demeans both sides of any given argument---but i'm making an exception here, and only because IT'S TRUE. if what you say is factual, these people are not only unenlightened and black-hearted, they are sick inside. just sick.

shame shame SHAME on them.

much the evil ones in the GOP are dependant upon 'untransparency' in elections to divide Democrats amongst themselves. Why else would Andy & his name be such a threat.

I hope somebody writes a book.

So sorry for all of you. I'm sure it was terrifying. Perhaps a question should be put to the President (Helen Thomas?) on how Bush wants his supporters to act.

It's so hard to read this without having an emotional response. That there could be so much unwarranted hate from people who knew nothing about Andy is unbelievable. That this hate continues is unconscionable. The hatemongers are hiding behind their own failings, as citizens and as humans, and time will judge them accordingly. Thanks for sharing.

265. Remember when that Senator died with his family in the plane crash?
Remember how totally freaked out the GOP became after the funeral and how they attacked it for being a 'partisan' affair?

How awful was that. It seems the Repukes are terrified of icons and profound emotional attachment we may have with our leaders. They are terrified of "turning points" and emotional events in our personal narratives as progressives.

Like JFK or MLK or Robert Kennedy. They are terrified of those life altering progressive icons.

Poor, dear Andy. Poor you. Thank God for you, for your strength, and beauty, and courage. I am so horrified at what has become of my country, that all those qualities were required of you, that ANYone had to go through this, that we have somehow created these monsters among us, with no conscincece, no shame, no soul.

I knew there were problems, but this makes me ill. I hope someone can get to the bottom of this. I would like to see justice done. I would like to know the truth of all that happened.

Still, I am trying not to condemn all Republicans. Some of them still don't know what they're supporting. I couldn't finish David Brock's book, where he describes what he was hired to do for the right wing and why. It was too distressing. I suppose it's possible that some folks were actually hired to stalk Andy.

I would like to know the truth.

It is vitally important that this story be told as well as the actions to hold the thugs responsible for their criminal actions in this regard.

Please keep us updated on the story and let us know how we can help. Feel free to pm me any time. I pm'ed Andy several times during the bad times just to let him know that I was cheering for him. I know how difficult dealing with cancer is. For the last 2 years, I have supported my brother in his ongoing fight. In the early days, just doing all the paper work to get the health care he needed as someone with no income or health insurance seemed overwhelming. Never mind, trying to keep a positive frame of mind that is so essential in the fight.

WE have reached the end of what traditional medicine can/will do for him & have stepped up alternative/nutritional support hoping that will provide his body the strength to fight the disease. But watching his mood and emotional strength seesaw from positive to negative is wearing on me let alone what it does to him and we have no criminals hounding us to impair his fight.

I am sending good thoughts for all of you dealing with not only Andy's passing but with the ongoing fight.

288. Well this post is probably just for myself
As Andy is gone..and nothing can change that. I still can't believe it because as you said here, he was so alive even if all you ever had were e-mails or message boards.

The fantacism of these people speaks to the very level of hatred and cruelty that this one man has given to our country in such a short time, George W. Bush. Because probably Andy was targeted specifically with such unbelievable venom because he dared to question (as the basis of his current life's work) the very legitmacy of this president's claim to hold his office by honorable means.

That's right, lurkers..we on this forum and many in the world will never believe Bush was elected fairly or honestly.

My four year old asked me just the other day who that man was on TV. I didn't want to lie... which is all we have ever gotten from him and his supporters. So I told her..that man is the president but he was not elected honorably.

Honor. Truth. Shame.

Such words.. so relevant with today's events, with the Plame affair..what shame one man has given us in this country in such a short time! Or maybe just as in a horrible another era in another country..such kind of leadership based on lies, innuendo, and falsehoods where bullies are honored is what sets up the playing field for some of the worst and most powerless to feel that it's okay to be as rotten as your black heart allows along as long as you protect your leader.

That's all it's ever about. Protecting Bush..the Republicans..the ideology of ...hate and lies.

Oh and the fact that Andy was gay must have been icing on the cake.

These people are the kind of people that in Nazi Germany were oh so helpful in turning over the queer, the Jew, the political dissedent. Anything that guarantees them another crumb at the table. Or maybe just for fun.

It's hard to not be wounded and feel utter dispair at this level of cruelty. But I know, still, no matter what George W. Bush does to this country or how many loyal follwers he has biding for his lies and power, that love is not false..that the love of the people here for Andy and his work were the real deal.

Thanks for putting this together, though it is one of the saddest things I've ever read, in terms of what those people did (and continue to do) to Andy and to those most closely connected to him who tried to help him. It truly is beyond my comprehension that people could do this. My brain and my heart just cannot comprehend the hatred and visciousness that some people have. No matter how much I might not like someone, I could NEVER even conceive of pulling this kind of crap. On the other hand, the story is a good one in that it shows what people are capable of doing on the GOOD side, of reaching out and helping someone they have never met, of giving for the sake of human life. And they say WE don't value human life???? Actions speak louder than words, do they not?

and continue to be in awe of this beautiful community.

The Right Wing never had any soul. They have no belief in any higher power, as much as they claim to "be on the same page with Gawd." They are wicked, self-serving, and seem to thrive on the pain of others.

The only good thing here is that Andy never has to face this sort of human hatred again. They murdered him, the same as if they'd kidnapped him and denied him vital treatment for a month. But they can't hurt him anymore.

I hope Will Pitt and you and others are successful in making their lives even a fraction of the hell they made Andy's last days.

The interesting thing about the story is that it contains both the best and the absolute worst elements of human nature. The angels and the devils of our nature.

304. Many times in my life I've been required
to look into the face of evil and stand against it - but this is overwhelming. The energy expended to harrass a sick man and see to it that he was denied urgent medical care is mind boggling - particularly when you think of what it could have accomplished had it been turned, instead, toward doing good.

Beth, this had to have been an absolutely harrowing experience, and I'm afraid it probably will continue to be so. Thank you so much for doing what you did for Andy - and what you're continuing to do.

those sickos will get theirs, if not in life than in the hereafter.

Odds are, many of them were so-called Christians, Jesusland people.

What would Jesus do? send hate mail to a dying man? I think not.

You were a good friend to Andy, God bless and peace to you.

314. words still fail, but for "thank you" to Beth & to each of Andy's friends.
and these coldest thoughts, for the perpetrators:

some people curse themselves: so let the cursed be named

in the court of souls: where all must stand; and none escape;

and in the court of human laws: here, may mercy bear less patience

than justice unbound will grant the raw vengeance of unblinded angels.

some people bless us, in their singleheartedness;

in truth, the way of life itself is written on our hearts

within their dear image: their works become

our courage: our works, their spirits' homage.

the difference of quality: simple, stark, and plain -

beyond grief's bitter cleansing, or reason's fiery gall -

life's gift: abundance shared for the good of all;

or "lust in action": "The expense of spirit in a waste of shame"...

William Shakespeare Sonnet 129

The expense of spirit in a waste of shame
Is lust in action; and till action, lust
Is perjured, murderous, bloody, full of blame,
Savage, extreme, rude, cruel, not to trust,
Enjoy'd no sooner but despised straight,
Past reason hunted, and no sooner had
Past reason hated, as a swallow'd bait
On purpose laid to make the taker mad;
Mad in pursuit and in possession so;
Had, having, and in quest to have, extreme;
A bliss in proof, and proved, a very woe;
Before, a joy proposed; behind, a dream.
All this the world well knows; yet none knows well
To shun the heaven that leads men to this hell.

http://www.william-shakespeare.info/william-shakespeare-sonnet-129.htm

i couldn't think what other voice has said more eloquently just how
some people curse themselves: so may we each become wise to the great
truth expressed here; and in the final couplet, made stingingly clear.

Not "lust", nor "waste of spirit".
No deference to shamelessness; for
It is not we who are shamed.
No joy; no dream; but coldest
Accountability: now and hereafter:
Justice. Justice. Justice.
The only "heaven" worthy of the name.

"What a Ballot Is" ~ Andy Stephenson

TIW's preface:
The following was written by Andy April 29, 2005. It is a draft, about which he said, "Just putting thoughts on paper right now. So in case something happens to me, god forbid...I have it down for others in the future."

"What a ballot is. It is not merely a piece of paper it is me...it is my voice. Each of us should guard it more than we would our most prized or precious possession. That ballot protects our other possessions. Without it you have no say. Over the last couple of years I have been adamant about the need for a voter verified paper ballot. It has been the driving force behind what I have done and will continue to do. To me, my ballot is the most sacred sacrament of the secular religion we call Democracy."

322. Mother of God, I knew it was bad, but not this bad.
This was not just harassment, but absolutely criminal. And a very important life was lost in the process. You are doing a very important thing here, by documenting all this. I have long been an admirer of Mark Crispin Miller. I've seen his work and it's well-researched and meticulous. We all have to stand with you on this, and send you our strength and support. You've stood alone too often throughout all this, though I know that Andy's supporters have been legion. Thank you for stepping up to the plate, once again. I cannot imagine what it was like for you to have gone through all this and the pain that you're having to face by reliving it.

Andy was one of my first friends on DU, and remained a friend, always generous and very kind. I mourn the loss of the light-hearted guy that I once knew. And I damn those who perpetrated this criminal conspiracy, which may well have taken his life, to the lowest ring of hell.:grr:

If it's looked that way, there were reasons for that. But believe me, there were plenty of hands and hearts at work. There still are.

But that isn't to say that it wouldn't be helpful if more DUers had a "lightbulb" experience about what has happened here.

Thank you for your thoughts and for your support.

373. I know that you haven't been alone, Beth, but you've been on the front
line. I just wish that I'd known all this, at the time, since I could have been more helpful, and offered more in the way of support. I'm learning more and more, after the fact, and it truly appalls me, unlike anything I've ever encountered in my life. I always believed that evil existed, but this is the first time I've seen it this up close and personal.

Andy was one of my first friends on DU, back in the beginning of 2003. I met him on a heart wrenching thread, when he was in agony because a young guy who he'd mentored committed suicide. We kept in touch, more or less, after that. I recently went back to DU.1 and reread the thread, which was heartbreakingly prescient, and looked at a few PMs that he sent me after this first meeting. The first ones I'd actually forgotten about, but they sure took me back. I'd never been on a message board before and I remember feeling a little alarmed. Who was this weird guy who was sending me these strange messages?! LOL! I know, now, that he was just sharing things that he thought were funny. But there was one which really got to me. It was after he'd come to terms with his friend's death and he felt that he understood what had happened and that the guy was trying to let him know that he was alright. That one absolutely ripped my heart out, considering present circumstances. I'll share it with you, sometime, if you'd like.

Anyway, I always considered Andy my friend, and he was always kind and generous to a fault, to me. I didn't always keep up with him, after he was no longer running his Subway and managing his apt. bldg. He went on to bigger things. And I regret that now. But I'm so glad that he had you, and others who have given me various parts of the story that I'd missed. As I said, I knew that it was bad, but I never could have imagined how cruel and evil that some people could be, especially to someone who had dedicated himself to such an important and worthy cause and was working so hard to do good in this world. When I think of Andy, I see light and unrelenting good humor. It seems inconceivable to me that such a force for good could have ever confronted such darkness.

As for the "light bulb" moment, since I've had mine, I've shared what I've learned with those who I'm closest to on DU. Everyone here needs to know exactly what happened, and what we, as DUers and liberals, are up against. And they need to understand what really happened with Andy, and with all of you who were working so hard to help him.

Thanks for all that you're still doing. It's really pretty amazing and I'll try to keep up with what's going on. And, of course, you have my support. It's the least I can do for my first real friend on DU.

Rhiannon:hug:

327. I just spoke with a personal injury attorney about Andy...
He said that it's case of intentional infliction of emotional distress. Wrongful death would be difficult to prove, given how sick Andy was. However, intentional infliction of emotional distress has the potential for a huge award.

The tort can be brought in Washington, Maryland or both.

The judgement would be a non-dischargable debt, meaning it cannot be erased by bankruptcy. They can be hounded the rest of their lives, just like people without health care coverage can be hounded for medical bills the rest of their lives.

328. Beth, I just read your account here, and every one of the posts below it.
I am just...mind-boggled, and overwhelmed, at your courage, at Andy's, and at that of everyone involved, and I am so grateful for your extraordinary account of what happened.

I have to laugh--I came across a post of Will's yesterday, I think--and he was in a blithering rage at the Freepers. I didn't know exactly what he was talking about. I knew it was about Andy, and he was saying things like, "You know who you are. And we know who you are" --and basically saying he was going to ruin their lives (paraphrase). I wrote a little comment to him about "peace." I figured whoever he was talking about, they were going to get what they deserved. (Nothing like Will in a blithering rage! It was awesome.) But I wanted Will to calm down just a bit, and purify that fire.

Well, I now know what he was talking about, and fully understand his anger. My God!

But I am thinking about the fire now. The light. When the light of truth is very, very strong, and hot and dazzling, it can attract the most dreadful demons and powers of darkness. The darkness is a measure of the light. That's what has happened here, I think. Andy had hold of this flaming light of truth about our dying democracy, and became a spokesperson for that truth, and allowed it to shine through him. Those who attacked him were attracted to that flame, like the demons of the dark. They sought to put out the light. But in his death, the light did not diminish; it grew stronger and spread out. Our democracy is being reborn out of that struggle, your struggle, his struggle, our struggle to be the light-carriers and to pass the beautiful flame of democracy along to the future.

Yes, so true. Once my grandmother wrote an editorial, come to think of it, about a young Nicaraguan activist that was being smeared the old fashioned way. She called it, "El entierro del Sol", or "Burying the Sun". I haven't thought of that for twenty years or more.

329. I've known a long time
That the Republican Party, the Religious Right, and the members of Free Republic in particular are small-minded vindictive scum who claim to love America and their neighbor, yet actually despise both. Every day I read in magazines, papers and online of more atrocities that make me wonder how far these people will go to advance their causes, and if there are any depths to which they won't sink.

After reading the saga of Andy Stephenson I now realize the truth. There is no limit to their depravity. These people are the epitome of cruelty and evil. They have utterly no compassion or respect for humanity, and that both saddens and frightens me. It also makes me vehemently angry.

This sort of injustice should not be taking place.

330. Dear God, dear God,
a man DIED and they just keep up the hate. It's almost unbelievable it's so incredibly horrid.

I never thought I'd say this about an entire group of people, but there is not a shred of humanity in people like that. They are not decent, they are not one bit good, they are not one bit honest or kind or compassionate. All is lacking inside them.

What was the motivation? If I saw a right wing website raising a lot of money for a sick member of theirs and I thought for a second they were being duped, I'd just think "oh well." That would be the end of it. And certainly when I heard of the member's death, I'd think "wow, that was cool that they were at least able to raise that money and try to help them."

But I've got a heart beating in my chest.

I have to wonder about people like that, I really do. Criminals and thugs.

Well, Andy, whereever you are, you are free of them now. Free of all the hate. But we're still here to carry on.

338. I was also thinking of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman & Michael Schwerner
last night, after reading all of this--the three civil rights workers who were murdered by the Ku Klux Klan in Mississippi in 1964. It was the most important event of my young life. I was a young white girl raised in a white enclave of rural California. The black civil rights struggle, and, indeed, black people, were entirely outside of my experience. A year later, I found myself in Alabama as a volunteer for Martin Luther King's voting rights campaign, having consciously made the decision to help flood the south with northern students to broaden the target. I remember thinking, "I'm not going to let this crap happen in MY country. They can't kill us all!" The light carried by those three civil rights workers had attracted the dark demons of bigotry and hatred out of their murky swamp, and exposed them for all to see.

The year they were killed, 1964, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act. And the following year, 1965--the year I was in Alabama--Congress passed the Voting Rights Act. And within ten years, we began to see black sheriffs and black mayors elected in the south, something that was inconceivable to me in 1965. I thought it would take a century for anything like that to happen, if it ever did.

Out of pain and tragedy and fear and darkness and suffering, something beautiful was born that touched my clueless young heart all the way out there in white rural California. A passion for justice and fairness. The burning flame of democracy. I really had no idea what democracy was, until black people, in their pain and suffering, taught me what it was. I had no idea what courage was, until I saw what I saw of the black struggle for citizenship in rural Alabama. It was only then that I began to understand the American Revolution. For all its whiteness and eliteness, and even with the crime of slavery on its conscience, the American Revolution conveyed a flaming passion for equality and fairness into the future. It was a fire that would grow.

And this is what this horror that was visited upon Andy and his friends is all about. It will not be for nothing that he and you suffered these things. The dark demons have guaranteed that. The flame that he carried will grow and spread. It will touch people in faraway places whom you will never know. It will flood this country with light and transform it. And we WILL have transparent, verifiable elections in this country once again, and we WILL restore democracy here, because that's what he lived and died for, and that's why they hounded him to his death, these ignorant thugs, who think that they can kill the flame and passion of the Enlightenment, and the light of Reason, and the desire for justice and freedom, by killing individuals. It has never worked. They will find that out.

339. There were things I didn't know in there. I teared up again.
I didn't post here when your fundraising campaign started. I read about it on DailyKos and donated from that. After attending the voting workshop in Columbus, I started posting here and was quite impressed with the generosity of DUer's in helping Andy. Since I'd met him and some of the others involved, helping him became more of a personal interest so I followed the threads and sent in a second donation.

Then there began to be questions and someone mentioned threads at that other place. I looked. At that point I was just surprised that people did that - spent their days reading posts on one site to make fun of on another. I kept reading as it got worse - sort of like watching a train wreck. It was hard to comprehend that people would go to such effort, go so low and hate so much. They bragged of calling neighbors of Andy and his friends trying to find dirt, calling Johns Hopkins (I wonder how the hospital handled all those idiots), etc., etc.

I didn't know they messed with his Washington Medicaid. That's what made me cry again. I usually cry once every 2-3 years and now it's been twice in a few weeks. Ruining my record here.

:grouphug: For everyone involved. Hang in there and do whatever you have to do. We'll be here for support.

341. I don't think there are words to adequately describe my feelings.
Only knew Andy via DU but was well aware of his energy, work, and will regarding Election Fraud and Voter Verified Paper Ballots.

As a cancer survivor, I was happy to contribute funds and prayers for his surgery and never doubted the effort for even a millisecond.

However, while aware of the problems and some of the details I had no idea whatsoever about the depth of pure evil to which these antagonists sank in order to create problems.

When I first read Will Pitt's post of rage I questioned it's usefulness. Now I'm ready to assist him in any way I can.

Many blessings are yours for your good works. Please let us know if there's anything else we can do to help.

PEACE
-PJ

It's good to see your name in here! I kind of miss the obsessive high-paced good old days in here!

I wish it was under better circumstances though. This really has been an unbelievable story...

Elizabeth...thank you.

My dad was diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer on June 10th.

I was so praying that Andy would beat the odds. I can not even begin to comprehend the kind of evil that wished Andy ill. These are people who have no souls. I pity them.

358. I didn't know this. This goes beyond politics!
Is this an example of their fristian compassionate conservativeness?

These piles of shit who masquerade as people are responsible for his death. Twisted hatred consumes their useless lives entirely. That's the only thing they've ever known, because they are too stupid to know anything else.

These cowardly shit-people who did this will never have the love and respect that someone like Andy had in life!

The memory of Andy and his work will live on!!

Schiavo: religious wrong fight to 'save' someone who died 15 years ago

And I am so very, very, very sorry for all you've been put through.

DO NOT be afraid of these jerks. They are good-for-nothings who are as evil as the Administration they support.

God bless you, Andy. Your good spirits and good work will long live on.

Andy at the very end, and even after his death. How can these people live with themselves. This is pure evil to have done this. I am speechless.

And Andy, thank you for everything you tried to do for all of us.
I am so sorry your last days couldn't have been the peaceful ones you deserved.

A woman named Julie Anne Kempf arrested on July 19. She was at Andy's funeral, ex-elections official in Seattle (King County), now an election reform activist. Sounds like trumped up charges and smear. This woman may need help.

369. Seattle Weekly has picked up parts of this story in a series of 3 articles
In this thread, the article excerpted in the opening post is the third of these on Andy, the attacks on him, and his memorial service. The first paragraph of the excerpt gives links to the first two papers in the series. Here is the thread:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4150261

I am also thinking on how the death of the great election reformist/HONEST electronic voting machine proponent Athan Gibbs has always looked suspiciously like murder.

These people are not playing.

Anyone think this would be a fitting tribute to Andy's memory?

or so? Some of us are still dealing with this loss and can't be much help right now.

Andy would love it, I think.
