WATCHDOG GROUP CHALLENGES ELECTION RESULTS:
CITIZENS QUESTION RELIABILITY OF MACHINES

10 News (8/2/05) SAN DIEGO -- An election watchdog group is asking for a recount of last week's mayoral vote, saying there are serious questions about the reliability of the computer system used to count ballots.

Major concerns are coming from Brina-Rae Schuchman and the Citizens Audit Parallel Election project. Last Tuesday, the non-partisan group camped outside polling booths. After voters cast a vote inside, they were asked to vote a second time outside, swearing the votes they cast were the same.

…According to the group's analysis, their count consistently differed from the registrar's tally, between 2 and 4 percent. These are numbers they consider significant.

…The group says it plans on asking and paying for a partial recount.
"If it comes out equal, terrific, but our numbers indicate that's not a high probability," Schuchman said…The group says if the discrepancy is big enough, it may ask to invalidate the election.

4. Yes, the media coverage was the most amazing part.

I think some of our smaller progressive publications have been pushing the envelope here. At least two, the East County Californian and Voice of San Diego, have published pieces critical of the voting machines here in the past week. Perhaps that's emboldening the more mainstream media to do its job.

The same thing happened with the Duke Cunningham scandal; the North County Times and Voice of San Diego broke the story first, and later the conservative Union-Tribune actually turned an investigative reporter loose to dig up more dirt.


I'm encouraging all San Diegans to write to Channel 10 and thank them for this coverage--and also forward this piece to other stations and ask them to run the story.

Naturally the Registrar dismissed the entire notion, making fun of the entire concept of exit polls while he was at it.

5. CM (corporate media) is paying dearly for their stupidity and arrogance.

They're on the ropes in terms of shrinking audience. You really nailed one of the main reasons. They are arrogant and stupid. Exit polls are used all over the world to validate elections. BushCo used them to back a new election in the Ukraine. What a joke this paper is. They'll join the Washington Post (my cat box liner) at the bottom of the charts in about 3 years when it's all internet, all the time.

6. Who cares what he thinks!!!

His work will either check-out or not; put up er shut up. This is the kinduv stuff that should be done nation-wide. Until reasonable verification audits are law (with or without the exit poll) "We the People" should seek to randomly verify OUR elections. GOOD STUFF!!!!

7. Our Beta Test of Citizen Audits may prove machine fraud on its first use

This is significant and gives us a means to block election manipulation in 2006. The fact that discrepancies have appeared in San Diego is a good indicator Citizen-Supervised Independent Election Audits work.

If we can mobilize to conduct similar audits across the country in 2006, we have an effective tool to stop machine fraud in its tracks.

Start organizing now. We need an army of volunteers and some fund raising for publicity and supplies.
