8. Grannie's rant
Okay, I don't go off much. I'm easy going, pragmatic and try to see the good in every one and every thing.

But the whole voting thing JUST PISSES THE HELL OUT OF ME. I have NO idea whether there were irregularities in Flordia (where I live) or Ohio. I've read both sides ad nauseum. Eventually it tangles my brain.

What pisses me off is that I EVEN HAVE TO WONDER. This is my right. To vote and know that it is counted. Once.

What idiot decided that we could trust voting machines? I mean the ones with no paper.

I can live with politicians I don't like. I can wait and bide my time and look to support another candidate. But if the voting is screwed then SO ARE WE.

Sorry.

Anyway, maybe this will result in some sort of reform. I can always hope.

Or we can just forget the paper results and send our votes in via ESP. Same thing.

Damn I need another Tegretol. My heart is racing.

13. You hit the nail on the head!! The fact that we have to guess if
our vote is being counted correctly shows that our "democracy" is a false one.

I think it would be easier to put up with the many politicians I loathe if I knew that they were voted in legitimately...cough, Bush, cough, Cheney...

19. its up. this is real good. here's what we can do with this.
http://www.bradblog.com/archives/00001838.htm

this proves the Diebold exploit was used and was known by Homeland Security and everyone else.....we can now print out all this information, and fax/mail it to every city council rep we see.

we can now force them to de-certify any of these programs due to violating HAVA

just imagine the leverage one could get with a federal lawsuit!!!!!

here's a good place to contact city officials....

28. More info for you
Date: Tue, 31 Aug 2004 00:38:05 -0400
Subject: http://www.blackboxvoting.org/?q=node/view/78

BlackBoxVoting.org reported a vulnerability in the Diebold GEMS central tabulator.

A local authenticated user can enter a two-digit code in a certain "hidden" location to cause a second set of votes to be created on the system. This second set of votes can be modified by the local user and then read by the voting system as legitimate votes, the report said.

GEMS 1.18.18, GEMS 1.18.19, and GEMS 1.18.23 are affected.

The vendor was reportedly notified on July 8, 2003.

31. Not sure if the 2-digit code thing is the same as the one shown on CNBC.
But Access is Access and it's clear that none of this is new.
As you say, what's new is that a company insider came forward and that's good.

And it's the tip of iceberg as far as what can be done with these machines.

30. 3 North Carolina counties have the GEMS backdoor
Pointing to a little-noticed "Cyber Security Alert" issued by the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT), a division of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the source inside Diebold -- who "for the time being" is requesting anonymity due to a continuing sensitive relationship with the company -- is charging that Diebold's technicians, including at least one of its lead programmers, knew about the security flaw and that the company instructed them to keep quiet about it.

There is an alert for the Diebold GEMS central tabulator, versions 1.17.17 and 1.18
Posted at the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team site, in a Cyber Security
Bulletin. They describe the risk as "medium".

Medium - A medium-risk vulnerability is defined as one that will allow an intruder immediate access to a system with less than privileged access. Such vulnerability will allow the intruder the opportunity to continue the attempt to gain privileged access. An example of medium-risk vulnerability is a server configuration error that allows an intruder to capture the password file.

http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/bulletins/SB04-252.html#diebold

These NC Counties have the GEMS listed as having the back door:
Edgecombe - GEMS 1.17.17
Gaston -GEMS 1.17.17
Rowan - GEMS 1.17.17

We have about 19 Diebold Counties, it is possible that others have GEMS, and it is not listed in my inventory from the NC SBOE.

37. see my new post. you now have the ammunition to force NC...
and all other states to de-certify that machine and so the exploits are illegal by HAVA....the machines can be removed immediately if you force the issue with the cities.
