...

But Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, who hopes to be next year's Republican nominee, is trying to raise money by convincing voters that Springer will get his party's nod.

In a pre-recorded telephone survey, Blackwell says Springer "will likely be the Democratic candidate for governor." He warns that Springer "will likely spend his personal fortune" to get elected, then asks for a contribution "to help me fight Jerry Springer's attack."

Some Democrats find it offensive that Ohio's top elections official would use such tactics.

"For the secretary of state to engage in something that is almost universally regarded as dirty politics is stunning," said Butland, who said Springer "is leaning" against entering the race...

1. I hope Springer doesn't run. Coleman is running for Governor.
But, I'm not surprised by Blackwell's tactics. I never could stand him.

CAPITOL SHOCKER: Blackwell Poll Shows Montgomery In Best Position To Win

July 26, 2005

Montgomery Campaign Sends Candy To Blackwell as a "Thank You"

http://www.bettymontgomery.com/newsDetails.cfm?i=92

(Columbus OH, 7/26/05) - A recent poll paid for by the Blackwell for Governor campaign inadvertently revealed that Blackwell's foremost opponent in that race, Betty Montgomery, is in the best position to win the GOP Primary Election. The poll showed that, among likely Republican voters, Montgomery is the best known and best liked of the three candidates.

Blackwell's poll showed that Montgomery is known by 85% of Ohio Republicans (compared to just 80% for Blackwell and Petro) and that she had a 51% favorable rating, compared to Blackwell at 49% and Petro at 43%.

Campaign experts typically look to how well-known and well-liked a candidate is to predict who is best able to win. Those factors tend to remain constant even while "head to head" polling goes up and down with changes in public opinion. These best-known and best-liked attributes helped Montgomery lead the ticket - ahead of both Blackwell and Petro - in 1998 and 2002.

Earlier today, the Montgomery campaign sent a box of candy to Blackwell for paying for the poll that showed Montgomery in the best position to win. "We're pleased that Ken Blackwell's campaign paid for a poll that helps us and we just wanted to show our appreciation," Montgomery Campaign Manager Shane Ostrowski said. 'The card says 'Thanks for the help!'"...
