News Advisory:

American University's Center for Democracy and Election Management (CDEM) has organized the Carter-Baker Commission on Federal Election Reform. This special Commission has been made up of 21 leaders of various political, academic and civic non-partisan groups.

On Monday, Sept. 19, former President Jimmy Carter and former Secretary of State James Baker and other members of the Commission will be on Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress and present the Commissions findings.

After Former President Carter and Former Secretary Baker meet with members of Congress to notify them of the Commissions findings, the two leaders will hold a press availability announcing the contents and recommendations of the final report.

blindly, I will be shocked because if anyone knows, Carter knows what needs to be done with our system of voting. :argh:

9. Just saw Carter and Baker with reporters lauding their report.

Carter mentioned specifically the need for a paper record so there could be a 1-2% random audit. This would do much, he said, to deter those who might want to steal an election. At least he stood up for the principle.

Carter also explained why he supported the idea of an ID card for voters. His reasons were pretty reasonable, tho I can't help thinking the idea will be used to control the results of elections. He said that since so many states are coming out with these IDs and since many of those states (including his home state of GA to their great discredit) were coming up with rules and methods that were terribly restrictive and undemocratic, this suggestion was to make the results more uniform and less discriminatory. He also said that they asked for the state officials to actively pursue voters to give them their IDs. He felt this would actually increase the voter rolls rather than decrease.

All in all, I felt Carter at least was on the right track and some good things came out of the Commission. Obviously, it was mostly whitewash, but with so many Repubs on the commission and with their need to protect their own, it was the best that could be expected.

All legitimate domestic and international election observers should be granted unrestricted access to the election process, within the rules of the election.
