Maryland's Republican Governor Ehrlich continues to face the music about the Diebold voting machines that his state bought into hook, line and sinker (emphasis on sinker). He's been had by Diebold's use of the state as a "showcase", but at least he now seems brave enough to admit it, even while the Diebold dead-enders (like State Elections Board Chairman Gilles W. Burger and Democratic Election Administrator Linda H. Lamone who brokered the deal) are trying to hang on to the very last.

Ehrlich has sent a new letter to Burger today, demanding that Maryland's paperless touch-screen Diebold voting machines be sent back to federal authorities for further testing in light of recent discoveries of the vulnerability of the machines to hacking and tampering. Ehrlich writes, "We are spending too much time protecting the status quo instead of evaluating Maryland’s current election system from an objective and unbiased perspective.

1. Well, this does seem good. Sort of.

The letter states:

"Recommendation 1: That the State Board of Elections refer the Diebold AccuVote-TS voting unit and the AccuBasic source code to the Independent Testing Authority and also to an independent qualified security expert to determine whether existing security flaws can be mitigated."

WTF good will that do? Give us another report that says the equipment is hackable so take two aspirins and call me after the election?


Will anyone have the guts to send Diebold (and the others) back to the ITA EXPRESSLY for the purpose of ascertaining if the equipment MEETS the 2002 VVSG.

Is that too much to ask? :shrug:

Hopefully this statement at the end means something good for the cause, only so much Diebold and the media can keep covered up when more and more people keep looking at the facts about these machines.

I was shocked, because generally, Erlich is a prick: pro-gambling, corporatist, etc. Last week I saw a sign way up on a crane in somebody's yard: "Go Flush Yourself, Gov Erlich!"
