Instant Runoff Voting: 3rd Party wins Mayor race in Vermont
Edited on Wed Mar-08-06 05:05 PM by garybeck
IRV is cool. There's no way he would have won without IRV. This proves that people want more choices, but they don't want to waste their vote on someone who can't win. IRV enables people to choose who they really want and not worry about wasting their vote. It also minimizes negative campaigning because the candidates want to be your second choice, even if they're not your first choice.

Voters pucker up for Kiss

March 8, 2006

<snip>

The election marked the first in the city's history in which instant runoff voting was employed, and Kiss was awarded the victory only after the votes of runners-up in the five-way race were redistributed.

2. WOO HOO! Be afraid Dem Reps, BE VERY AFRAID
You can run, but you can't hide! Either you start representing the interests of citizens or you destroy the party. What's it gonna be?

Miller began her campaign in September and outspent Kiss 8-1, but in the end, her support waned. She carried the endorsements of former Govs. Howard Dean and Madeleine Kunin and U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy -- all Democrats -- and Mayor Peter Clavelle. She pointed to her years of corporate experience with the sportswear company Jogbra and promised to make the city a magnet for entrepreneurs and small businesses.

3. yup, and
the Kiss guy who won, while she was making Jogbras and promising Burlington to be a magnet for businesses, he was running a non-profit that supported homeless people.

what does that tell you?

4. LOL! It tells the Dem Reps everything they need to know!
That is IF they're interested in saving the party, as much as their constituents are.

Thanks for posting.
Best news I've had in a long time.

8. This should be a major plank of our ELECTION REFORM package
Including paper ballots counted by hand, and full public financing of elections.

10. Agreed!
IRV is important for voting integrity... i think equally as important as public financing and hand counts. Rock on Vermont!
