2. FL: Programmer who alleged plot to steal Florida election runs for Congres

Carlos Miller: Programmer who alleged plot to steal Florida election runs for Congress, The Raw Story, March 24, 2006

"To Republicans, Clint Curtis is a traitor; a back-stabbing liar with an imagination that rivaled Jack Abramoff's influence over Congress. To liberal Democrats, Curtis is a hero; a stand up guy who blew the whistle on computer voting fraud, testifying before a group of U.S. House Committee Judiciary Democrats after the 2004 presidential election. And to the man himself, the Republican-turned-Democrat is nothing but a computer geek who purports to have found himself smack in the middle of a brazen political plot to tamper with elections in Florida, where fact can be stranger than fiction and politics as shady as swampy underbrush. . . . In Texas case, Republican Steve Smith is preparing a challenge after losing in the state's Supreme Court Justice primary election earlier this month. In Winkler County, Texas, where Smith respectively received 74 percent and 65 percent of the votes in the 2002 and 2004 elections, he received zero votes in the recent primary. . . . Smiths' opponent, Don Willet, has close ties to President Bush. Willet served as a special assistant to the president in Bush's quest for faith-based initiatives." (3/28)

3. NH: Phone Jamming in NH 2002 Involves White House and RNC

John Distaso: Calling Ken?, Manchester Union Leader, Marc

"In the days before and after the state Republican Party's 2002 Election Day phone-jamming scheme, the man who now chairs the Republican National Committee was the White House director of political affairs. And a Democratic-affiliated advocacy group says that court records show Ken Mehlman's office received more than 75 telephone calls from now-convicted phone-jam conspirator James Tobin from Sept. 30 to Nov. 22 of that year. The Senate Majority Project, a brainchild of former Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle, wonders why Tobin called the White House so often. ... On election morning, a telemarketer hired by the state GOP jammed the telephones of five state Democratic and one firefighters union get-out-the-vote phone banks. Former state GOP executive director Chuck McGee admitted masterminding the scheme and served seven months in jail last year for it. Tobin was found guilty in December of federal telephone harassment charges for acting as a middle man." ( See also Buzz Flash: Did White House Direct Phone Jamming Scheme?). (3/28)

4. FL: “Arguably … the most electorally dysfunctional state in the union”

Andrew Gumbel: Electoral dysfunction, Los Angeles CityBeat, March 23, 2006

"Ion Sancho is a rare, if not unique, figure in America's blasted electoral landscape, a county election supervisor who actually cares about the reliability, transparency, and public accountability of his voting systems. Since his bailiwick is Leon County, the area in and around Florida's state capital, Tallahassee, he also has a unique vantage point on what arguably remains the most electorally dysfunctional state in the union, and he provides regular, withering commentary on the anti-democratic skullduggery of the other Bush administration, the state government led by George W.'s brother, Jeb. For both these things, he is now being hung out to dry. . . . It's a chilling scenario. A public official takes steps to defend the integrity of elections in his county, and he is promptly identified as a threat who needs to be removed. It would be bad enough if the Sancho affair were limited to Florida, but really it has implications all over the country. The more we find out about the expensive computerized systems being installed in county after county, and state after state, the more it becomes apparent that the processes to inspect and certify them are wholly inadequate and may well be opening the door to election-stealing on a scale this country has never seen before. And yet, with vast quantities of money and bureaucratic pride at stake, the official reaction to the shortcomings remains, overwhelmingly, to pretend that they don't exist. California, sadly, is no exception to this general pattern. . . . As Ion Sancho told me, public authorities are supposed to be "the gatekeepers and protectors of the citizen" but instead they appear interested only in protecting the interests of the voting machine companies. We need to generate the broadest possible outrage about this travesty of our democratic rights. And we need to do it fast." (3/28)

5. MA: The Hon. John Conyers, D, MI Endorses Bonifaz, Secretary of State

This is our stand up guy. He went into Ohio at his own risk to investigate massive election fraud. No wonder he’s endorsing Bonifaz. John was right there with him suing for a recount. What an honor.

Congressman John Conyers Endorses Bonifaz

Submitted by Ethan Kiczek on Tue, 03/28/2006 - 9:00am.
http://www.johnbonifaz.com/
From today's press release (no copyright restrictions apply, extended quotation allowed)

BOSTON, MA - Congressman John Conyers, Jr., the second most senior member in the United States House of Representatives, announced his endorsement today of voting rights leader John Bonifaz for Massachusetts Secretary of State.

"In the wake of Florida 2000 and Ohio 2004, it is more important than ever that we have a Secretary of State like John Bonifaz who will fight for our democracy," said Conyers (D-MI), the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee and the dean of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Congressman Conyers and Bonifaz have worked closely together in fighting to protect the integrity of the electoral process, and in challenging the Bush administration on its illegal war in Iraq. In December 2004, Bonifaz, the founder of the National Voting Rights Institute, joined Conyers for hearings the congressman held in Columbus, Ohio, and in Washington, D.C., on the irregularities of the 2004 election in Ohio. Bonifaz led the fight in the courts for a full recount of the 2004 presidential vote in Ohio. The recount fight contributed important evidence to the report Conyers issued, "Preserving Democracy: What Went Wrong in Ohio," which led to the historic challenge in the US Congress in January 2005 to the counting of Ohio's Electoral College votes.

In February 2003, Bonifaz served as lead counsel for Conyers and other Members of Congress, along with US soldiers and parents of US soldiers, in a federal lawsuit in Boston challenging President George W. Bush's authority to launch a first-strike invasion of Iraq absent a congressional declaration of war or equivalent action. In June 2005, Bonifaz joined Conyers again as a key witness testifying on the Downing Street Minutes in hearings the congressman held in the basement of the US Capitol. The Downing Street Minutes, first reported by the London Sunday Times, revealed that the Bush Administration had decided, as of July 2002, to invade Iraq and that the "intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy."

"John Bonifaz has been a remarkable asset to me and to the nationwide movement to hold the Bush Administration accountable for its abuses of power," Conyers said in his announcement today. "Massachusetts deserves a strong, proven leader like John Bonifaz. Our country needs to elect more principled progressive candidates like John Bonifaz."

"I am deeply honored to receive this endorsement today from Congressman Conyers," said Bonifaz. "Congressman Conyers is an extraordinary human being with a long history of standing up for what is right. He believes, as I do, that we must fight to return voters to power and to uphold the basic promises of our democracy. I am proud to stand with him."

6. LA: Voting Rights Protest Rally in NOLA – Jackson demands voting rights

Here you have it, they’re not going to do a damn thing to get the evacuees a chance to vote. The current efforts are “the least they can do,” and they are making sure it is the least possible effort thanks to the Louisiana state legislature which has forbidden the Secretary of State from satellite voting, public service announcements, and other measures outside the state of Louisiana. It’s a rigged game.

Voting Rights for the Displaced Is the Rally Cry in New Orleans
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW ORLEANS, April 1 (AP) — Hundreds of protesters led by the Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton rallied Saturday, demanding that all displaced New Orleans residents be allowed to vote in the April 22 municipal election.

Critics of the voting system — proposed for the election for mayor and other city positions — say it makes it difficult for displaced voters to participate.

"We want the Voting Rights Act," Mr. Jackson said at a news conference before the rally. Black leaders have argued that city elections, should they proceed, could violate the act.

<snip>.

Mr. Jackson and others are demanding satellite polling places for displaced voters in cities beyond New Orleans and even outside Louisiana. Fewer than half the city's 460,000 residents have returned since Hurricane Katrina flooded New Orleans on Aug. 29. Demonstrators also urged the release of updated lists of displaced-voter addresses, a request the Federal Emergency Management Agency has denied, saying it would breach privacy.

7. Selma, AL: Selma Citizens Go to NOLA to Support Voting Rights – Remember

REMEMBER WHEN DEMOCRATS WERE DAMN PROUND OF BEING THE PARTY OF VOTING RIGHTS? I do and those were great times. Only the outright bigots opposed that. It was an honorable and popular position. No hesitation. Those were great times. The Selma March in the 60’s was a critical juncture for the civil righs movement. Hundreds took a serious beating to protest the lack of enfranchisement in Alabama.

Shuttle from Selma taking marchers to New Orleans

The Dallas County New South Coalition, the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute, the 21st Century Youth Leadership Movement and the Dallas County Democratic Conference have joined together to shuttle area residents to the Return, Vote and Rebuild March in New Orleans Saturday, April 1.

<snip>

The marchers will protest the Crescent City's April 22 mayoral election and Hurricane Katrina response. Black leaders seek to postpone the election, citing too many displaced black residents won't be able to cast their vote. On Monday, a federal judge refused to delay the election.

<snip>

Said Thomas, "The state of Alabama was in harm's way and damage was done, however, what happened in New Orleans is still above comprehension. They need our help today; we may need theirs tomorrow."

"It is my hope that evacuees who have made Selma their home, join this coalition in force and return to New Orleans to have their voices heard," Sanders said. "Selmians and citizens of the Black Belt, let's get on the bus."

What can I say, it was all there on March 1st.

The Disenfranchisement Of Katrina's Survivors

Wednesday, 1 March 2006, 3:02 pm
Article: Michael Collins
http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL0603/S00016.htm#7

Evacuees away from home, out of touch, and eager to get back, find Louisiana officials offering them the very least assistance in casting their vote and influencing their future. Rather than a proactive effort to reach all citizens eligible to vote, the states Act 40 makes clear that the Secretary of State has little authority to work beyond the borders of the state or even Orleans parish. FEMA, responsible for much of their distress and pain, offers little in the way of assistance. The voters are alone, away from their homes. Their only support comes from each other and the community organizations who seek relief in courts and through governmental agencies.

The betrayal of New Orleans has been manifested for years through poor planning, poor execution, sloppy workmanship, and negligent oversight of basic safety requirements.

The Federal government provided Louisiana $24 million to fund voting machine purchases in 2004. In that same year, it withdrew $24 million from levee maintenance support in the Federal budget. The de facto and de jure disenfranchisement of New Orleans evacuees is shaping up to be one of the most disgraceful chapters in the history of American governance. The ballot box, the purported solution, is hidden, swathed in absurdist regulations and out of reach for those most in need of access. The denial of voting rights to Katrina evacuees is a denial of their right to self determination. It is a national disgrace.

Who benefits?

9. CA: 25-33% of Mailed In State Registration Forms Rejected – Voting Rights

You heard it here first, maybe. THE 2006 ELECTIONS WILL BE A DISASTER. PEOPLE WILL TAKE TO THE STREETS IN MASS PROTESTS. Look here, 25% to 33% of registrations are rejectedin California. That’s not a poor state. It’s a wealthy, technically advanced state. AND IT CAN’T HANDLE CENTRALIZED REGISTRATION DATABASES. We’re headed over the cliff folks. 2006 will be an outrage beyond any other we’ve experienced. But, I predict that the people will react forcefully. How about the 500,000 latinos and Latinas who marched in Los Angeles last weekend. You think they’re going to take this crap? Count on them being there to protest the next theft of voting rights for Americans all across the country.

New voters being rejected
Many didn't provide the identification that's now required

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/03/31/MNGC1I1ARQ1.DTL&feed=rss.news

John Wildermuth, Chronicle Political Writer

Friday, March 31, 2006

Problems with a new statewide voter registration system could keep tens of thousands of Californians from showing up on election rolls this June.

More than 25 percent of the new registration forms sent to the state since Jan. 1 have been returned to the counties, most because they lack the driver's license, state identification or Social Security numbers now required by federal law.

"It's part of the new validation requirements that are pretty stringent,'' said David Tom, election manager for San Mateo County. "Any information that doesn't match exactly gets rejected.''

In San Mateo County, more than a third of the registrations turned in to the state since the first of the year have been rejected. The number is even higher in sprawling Los Angeles County, where 43 percent of the registrations this year have been sent back to the county.

10. CA: McPherson to “could ease” county registration requirements- DECEPTION
CA: McPherson to “could ease” county registration requirements – More DECEPTION
Why would anybody even begin to believe McPherson now. He says the new bill will give counties “commonsense flexibility” on registration identification requirements. Bull Shit Bruce, you toad. Voters have a universal right to access to the ballot. You need to make it easier for people to vote, not for counties. The standards MUST BE UNIFORM. McPherson has gone back and forth on various voting rights issues. Ultimately, he has fallen line with Arnie and the Diebolds of the world. Bruce, we have a long memory but we won’t need it. Your role in the larger scheme of right wing election fraud is unraveling. Events are outpacing you. Give up, tell the truth.

SACRAMENTO
Proposal could ease counties' voter-registration concerns
- John Wildermuth, Chronicle Political Writer
Saturday, April 1, 2006

Faced with the possibility that tens of thousands of new California voters could be left off the rolls for the June primary election, Secretary of State Bruce McPherson announced plans on Friday to ease the state's tough new voter-registration requirements.

A story in Friday's Chronicle reported that more than 25 percent of the registrations turned in this year have been rejected by the state's brand-new voter-registration database, forcing county election officials to track down each individual and verify the information on the rejected voter card.

Most of the problems involved voters who had not included either their driver's license, state identification or Social Security number. Under current state rules, at least one of those numbers is needed so that the state can verify the identity of a would-be voter.

McPherson wants to change the law so that the driver's license or other numbers would not be needed if the name and birth date on the voter-registration card was an exact match to the name and birth date already in the Department of Motor Vehicle computers. The proposed new law would provide commonsense flexibility for county election officials, McPherson said in a news release.

11. FL: Sancho Supporters Hold Support Rally

Sancho gets support! We would expect that. He’s competent, honest, and does his job. He needs support in today’s upside down world of election fraud. Jeb is attacking him and he’s fighting back. In addition, the Attorney General, a Republican is looking into collusion charges against the vendors for conspiring to screw Sancho. The AG is running in the Republican Governors primary and is not supported by Jeb. He could be serious or the AG just might be putting the arm on Jeb to lighten up on the endorsement of his primary opponent. With Florida, you never know.

Ion Sancho supporters hold press conference

http://www.tallahassee.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060402/NEWS01/604020324/1010/NEWS01
April 2, 2006

INSIDE POLITICS Supporters of Supervisor of Elections Ion Sancho held a press conference Friday to show him some community encouragement.

Sancho came under fire earlier this year when he couldn't meet a Jan. 1 deadline to get election equipment for the disabled. But that was because none of the three vendors certified to sell the machines in Florida would do business with Sancho.

We need to give him some encouragement," former Leon County Commissioner Anita Davis said. "I know it's going to work out because he did the right thing. He opened up something that nobody had the nerve to do."

Sancho is hoping to buy equipment from a company called IVS, but he's also open to the possibility of buying Diebold equipment, provided the company addresses his concerns. Diebold, at the behest of Secretary of State Sue Cobb and county leaders, recently agreed to consider selling its touch screens to Sancho.

Meanwhile, Attorney General Charlie Crist issued subpoenas last week to Diebold and the other two vendors as part of a probe into the equipment problems.

24. There is a group here in CA which does independent polling, run by a,prof
fessor form UCLA. We are looking for volunteers to help in san Diego in the election on April 11th. It is exciting work, and we need all the volunteers we can get. I worked during the "special election". We follow strict procedures, ballot boxes are signed, sealed, and counted in front of several tv cameras. Let me know if you would like to get involved. Anyone else interested in volunteering for april 11th, or future elections, let me know.

16. What Really Happened...
Some good reading material on the subject:

From "What Really Happened," a link from the Crisis Papers web site: http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/2004votefraud_review.html

Alex Pelosi's new film "Diary of a Political Tourist" catches a tipsy Congressman Peter King making a comment at a White House function before the election had been finished that, "It's already over. The Election's over. We Won."

When Pelosi asks, "How do you know that?" King replies, "It's all over but the counting. And we'll take care of the counting."

22. Sarbanes-Oxley Disclosure Law Targeted by Starr in Factor Suit
Edited on Mon Apr-03-06 04:54 AM by livvy
edit: Not exactly "pure" election reform, except for Factor's involvement with fund-raising for Republican candidates.

Sarbanes-Oxley Disclosure Law Targeted by Starr in Factor Suit

April 3 (Bloomberg) -- Mallory Factor, who is suing to abolish the U.S.'s auditing-oversight board, doesn't hide his real target: the 2002 law aimed at preventing accounting frauds like the ones that brought down Enron Corp. and WorldCom Inc.

The law, called Sarbanes-Oxley for its co-sponsors, ``is purely and simply government at its worst,'' says Factor, the founder of New York merchant-banking firm Mallory Factor Inc.

Factor has assembled a Republican dream team of lawyers including Kenneth Starr, the former independent counsel who investigated President Bill Clinton, to press his case. Their goal is to prompt Congress to scale back the law and reduce compliance costs for companies.

>snip

The suit is being financed by the Free Enterprise Fund, a Washington-based policy group led by Factor, 55, that advocates small government and free markets. Besides chairing the fund and running his firm -- a merchant bank makes investments using its own capital -- Factor is active in fund-raising for Republican political candidates.
>more

The case is Free Enterprise Fund v. Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, 06-217, U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
