Al Gore on Hand Counted Paper Ballots

VICE PRESIDENT GORE

November 15, 2000

SNIP...This is a time to respect every voter and every vote. This is a time to honor the true will of the people. So our goal must be what is right for America. There is a simple reason that Florida law and the law in many other states calls for a careful check by real people of the machine results in elections like this one. The reason? Machines can sometimes misread or fail to detect the way ballots are cast, and when there are serious doubts, checking the machine count with a careful hand count is accepted far and wide as the best way to know the true intentions of the voters.

That is why there have already been partial or complete hand counts not just in two Democratic counties in Florida, but in six Republican counties as well.

We need a resolution that is fair and final. We need to move expeditiously to the most complete and accurate count that is possible. And that is why I propose this evening a way to settle this matter with finality and justice in a period of days, not weeks.

First, we should complete hand counts already begun in Palm Beach County, Dade County and Broward County to determine the true intentions of the voters based on an objective evaluation of their ballots. Observers and participants from both parties should be present in every counting room, as required under Florida law. The results of this recount would, of course, be added to the present certified vote total and the overseas absentee vote total. If this happens, I will abide by the result, I will take no legal action to challenge the result, and I will not support any legal action to challenge the result. I am also prepared, if Governor Bush prefers, to include in this recount all the counties in the entire state of Florida. I would also be willing to abide by that result and agree not to take any legal action to challenge that result. If there are no further interruptions to the process, we believe the count can be completed with seven days of the time it starts

Lets review: Al Gore says:

1) Machine count with a careful hand count is accepted far and wide as the best way to know the true intentions of the voters.

2) Settle this matter with finality and justice in a period of days, not weeks.

3) We need to move expeditiously to the most complete and accurate count that is possible.

If you take a look at

Bill Faulkner’s Answer to Fear and Loathing in the Voting Booth

a) optical scan counting and hand counting of optical scan ballot with

b) the hand counted paper ballots serving as the ballot of record.

Each process checks the other and the entire process serves as both a tabulation of votes and a simultaneous audit, conducted in the open by citizen’s not private concerns

If Bill Faulkner plan was in place in 2000, Al Gore would be President today.

4. You think so, kster? I think you may be right. A paradigm shift.
I've been thinking it will be a long hard slog to get back our right to vote. But so many things are happening all at once that point to the illegitimacy of the Bush Junta, that it becomes only a short step to seriously question how they kept power in 2004, and if you look into it, even superficially, the fraudulence of the vote counting system--its inherent fraudulence--its GLARING fraudulence--is apparent.

I've been following events in South America--and of course, I gravitate to information about the voting system. And I was amazed to find out that Venezuela, which has an open source code electronic system, handcounts FIFTY-FIVE PERCENT of the ballots, as a check against machine fraud. 55%!

While we who are inflicted with Bushite-controlled "trade secret" vote counting handcount ZERO percent, in some states, and a lousy 1% in the best states.

And our beloved Democratic leaders in Congress are proposing 2%. (--I presume because they don't want to get dis-elected by Diebold and ES&S, or they like Bush's war, or...?)

BUT....the times they are a-changin', as that great old '60s bard used to sing.

You been catching what's going on in Colombia? It turns out all the top people of Bush's big bud there, President Uribe--the head of the Colombian military, the former intelligence chief, and a bunch of congresscritters and others--have been involved with rightwing paramilitaries, major drug trafficking, mass murder, and a plot to assassinate Hugo Chavez. This is a military (and associated paramilitaries) upon which the Bush Junta has larded billions of our taxpayer dollars.

I don't know if you noticed, but Bush got publicly lectured by Latin American leaders, from Brazil to Mexico, on the SOVEREIGNTY of Latin American countries--in his recent jaunt--and completely failed in his "divide and conquer" mission. Something's up with this. I think the Bushites are stinky on this rightwing paramilitary connection in Colombia and its dreadful crimes and plots.

So, when I found your post this evening, I was thinking, yeah, something's different. Something in the wind. And it could all just suddenly...CHANGE. Even "trade secret" vote counting. Change like, people thinking "How could it ever have been?" Change like the '60s, when...suddenly, it seemed...war didn't make any sense any more. Why have war?

5. Not when you had corrupt people counting them
Edited on Tue Mar-27-07 05:31 AM by RestoreGore
And the fix already in with the Supreme Court. 2000 was a coup, and the counting didn't matter in the end. They would have found a way regardless...and they did. And they got away with it.

9. Is there any hope?
I'd be really excited to see Gore run again, especially since, in my opinion, Obama and Clinton are going to face voters unwilling to support them, simply because of their race/gender. I personally would vote for either, but I think Gore would have a better chance of winning.

10. Gore is not afraid to say HAND COUNT THE PAPER BALLOTS
The Establishment (Dem and Repub Politicians) and their super secret club will not say a word about Hand Counted Paper Ballots, and go so far as to make laws that prevent THE PEOPLE from Hand Counting even the optscan Paper Ballots.

So we go vote, we play out their Election Illusion, but atleast this time, WE ALL KNOW we have to wait and see, in reality, who the ESTABLISHMENT picked to be our next President.

The Politicians may fool all the people some of the time, they can even fool some of the people all of the time, but they cannot fool all of the people all the time.

I can't wait to see who they the (establishment) is going to pick!! You?

17. Except that he didn't say that
He said that the machine count and the hand count CHECK EACH OTHER. That's what Andy Stephenson always said that opscan audited by random hand counts was the best way to go for complicated ballots.

16. Al says "checking the machine count with a careful hand count.."
Isn't this from the introductory post?

"There is a simple reason that Florida law and the law in many other states calls for a careful check by real people of the machine results in elections like this one. The reason? Machines can sometimes misread or fail to detect the way ballots are cast, and when there are serious doubts, checking the machine count with a careful hand count is accepted far and wide as the best way to know the true intentions of the voters.

27. Regardless of whether or not the election was stolen...
There's no doubt that there are plenty of opportunities for election fraud and voter suppression, and any patriotic American will support efforts to fix this potential problem. (Unless, of course, you like election fraud.)
