A month ago, when I asked the DuPage County Election Commission to tell us how it is dealing with the known dangers of electronic voting, the number of letters I received from Naperville Sun readers was overwhelming.
A lot of them suggested that, if the commission failed to respond, I should ask them again. The local commissioners have not responded, so I am asking again.
It's not hard to see why our readers are so concerned. For one thing, the software that runs the voting machines is seriously flawed. This is hard to prove because, incredibly in my opinion, the code that tabulates our votes, the code that essentially decides who will lead this country, is considered a trade secret and we are not allowed to know how it works, or even if it does work.

Are, as election experts insist, all ballots transported in sealed containers with serialized, tamper-revealing seals? As ballots are processed, are representatives of both parties present during every step? Are the computer logs that tell who did what, and when they did it, available to observers on election night? Are the tabulation databases available after the election? And are observers welcome at every stage, including in the tabulation room?
