FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: CLARK LEE OCTOBER 20, 2008 909.702.5809 Statement of LA County Democratic Party Chair Eric C. Bauman On Republican Voter Registration Fraud The Democratic Party urges LA County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk to audit voter registration forms to protect voters against fraud LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles County Democratic Party Chair Eric Bauman today released the following statement on the arrest of Young Political Majors (YPM) voter registration consultant Mark Jacoby in connection to Republican voter registration fraud: “The arrest of California Republican Party voter registration consultant Mark Jacoby, owner of Young Political Majors (YPM), in connection with massive voter registration fraud marks one step toward bringing these criminals to justice. “We are glad that after weeks of voter complaints on voter registration issues we received and working with our counterparts and authorities, the voter fraud investigation has led to the arrest. But this is only the tip of the iceberg. “The Republicans are losing ground in California, even in the traditional “red” counties of the state, five of which have shifted from Republican to Democatic majority this year. They will stop at nothing and will do whatever is necessary to deceive voters and strip away their right to vote, even when it means “slamming” voters – fraudulently changing voters’ registration status and party affiliation. “I urge all registered voters in Los Angeles County to double check their registration status by using the online verification system at the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder’s website: www.lavote.net. “And, on behalf of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party, I request that Mr. Dean Logan, the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk, expand his audit and review of voter registration affidavits to include all voter registration affidavits turned in by Young Political Majors that specifically change voters’ party affiliation from Democratic Party or Decline to State to Republican Party, as a measure to protect voters from fraudulent registration. If necessary, we will seek a writ to enforce our request. “An individual willing to personally commit voter registration fraud would certainly feel no compunction about committing a widespread fraud affecting voters’ party affiliation. As I have always said, a citizen’s right to vote is the foundation of democracy and the cornerstone of democracy depends on the integrity of the voting process. We will take all steps necessary to protect the voters’ right to vote and bring voter fraud criminals to justice and ensu re every vote is counted, as cast.”
