THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Overruling her own political party, Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner today named a Hispanic attorney to the Franklin County Board of Elections.

Joseph L. Mas

Joseph L. Mas, 60, a Worthington Democrat, brings political experience to the job. He was the party's endorsed choice for county judicial races in 2002 and 2007.

A former chairman of the Ohio Hispanic Coalition, Mas has served on a dozen community boards. His family fled from Cuba in 1961 after the communists seized control when Mas was 12. He said he holds dear the importance of a valid vote to protecting democracy because of his family's experience.

"Such a gift, such a blessing, the American people have received," Mas said.

Brunner opened the process and screened eight applicants for the position after the Franklin County Democratic party flubbed the timing of its appointment. The party had selected its executive director, Zach Manifold, 27. But it voted before outgoing member William Anthony Jr. had technically resigned.

Some here might recall it was a Dem offical Bill Anthony who signed off (he deferred the decision to Matt Damschroeder-Republican?) on the allocation of voting machines in 2004. It's past time we get experience and independence over political hacks.

1. I like Jennifer Brunner!
She really worked hard to protect our election this time and many of us here in Ohio appreciate that.

I've heard that she may run for Voinovich's Senate seat when he retires.

2. I wish she would do something about 2004 fraud. So far, NOTHING at all!!
What a great disappointment given the evidence at hand.
