Three More NY Counties Urge State To Keep Lever Voting System
Election Transparency Coalition Launches Website to Track Resolutions
Washington, Warren and Rensselaer Counties became the latest to pass resolutions urging the State to repeal the Election Reform and Modernization Act (ERMA) and allow counties to keep using their lever voting systems.
Nine of NY's county legislatures have now passed such resolutions: the three resolutions passed last week join those from Columbia, Dutchess, Ulster, Schuyler, Greene and Essex Counties. The Association of Towns has passed a similar measure, and more local governments are set to join the call in the coming weeks.
The resolution approved unanimously by the Warren County Board of Supervisors calls ERMA's requirement to change voting systems "unnecessary, inappropriate, and costly" to taxpayers. Counties are understandably concerned about what the resolution calls an "unfunded mandate" that would drain crucial funding from other budgetary priorities.
The Election Transparency Coalition (ETC), a non-partisan organization dedicated to transparent elections in New York, continues to encourage counties to stand up to the mandates of ERMA, which would force all counties to abandon their lever voting systems by next year.
The ETC today launched a new website to provide local legislators and their staff members, along with the press and interested members of the public, with information about the resolutions and the importance of maintaining the state's uniquely trustworthy voting system. The new site, www.nylevers.wordpress.com, includes links to the text of each county's resolution, background information about both the current voting system and the ERMA-mandated software-based systems, and guidance for communities and individuals wanting to take action.
"Once people fully understand the issues, they immediately see the importance of keeping our lever voting system," said the ETC's project director, Sally Castleman. "There's a lot at stake here: the sanctity of New York's elections, upholding the State Constitution, and the financial solvency of local governments. Fortunately, more and more county legislatures are coming on board to speak for their constituents. It's time for the State to listen."
