8/3 Voting News. Dominion takes New York? USPS to push Vote By Mail, TX county ditching paper, PA wants levers

Sequoia/Dominion has succeeded in getting its machines in most New York Counties. The National Association of Letter Carriers) wants the the Postal Service to aggressively pursue “vote-by-mail” initiatives. Aspen is holding a special election by mail only, the town's mayor worries voters will be caught unaware. A felon disenfranchisement case may head to the US Supreme Court... Galveston County Texas will ditch paper ballots, go to all paperless voting and hopes to cut polling places. The Mississipp GOP is pushing to get voter ID on the ballot.

Tennessee still fighting over paper ballot law. I just found a great video of a Tennessee lawmaker arguing the cost benefits of paper ballots vs. paperless. This is from June, but you need to see it. Sen. Herron (TN) rebutts alot of misinfo. In India, a group of NGOs sets out to prove the machines can be tampered with - a bit of déjà vu? In Afghanistan, 3,000 donkeys are transporting paper ballots to the polls. Other countries struggle.

CO. Aspen marketing officials prepare for bed tax ballot questionFriday, July 31, 2009
Pitkin County residents can only mail in their ballots, which will require a specific postage rate and a restrictive timeline for them to be received by the county clerk and recorder. That creates several issues, said Mayor Mick Ireland, adding he is not a fan of mail-in ballot elections because people who move a lot become disenfranchised and not all of them will receive their ballots at the correct addresses.Others caught unaware won't realize that they can't vote at their normal polling places.

* Let the state pick up the tab or put off referendum until next year, critics say.
August 2, 2009...The combined cost for the four northern Indiana counties having a referendum on transportation this November will easily top $1 million... It's not necessarily the ballot question they're outraged about. Rather it's the timing of the referendum that's at issue.

MA. Felon Disenfranchisement Issue Heading to the Supreme Court?
On Friday, a First Circuit Panel split 2-1 in Simmons v. Galvin, a case challenging the disenfranchisement of currently incarcerated Massachusetts felons under section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and the ex post facto clause... The majority, in an opinion by Chief Judge Lynch, rejected the arguments... This case could well go to the Supreme Court on an issue that Judge Sotomayor knows well.

Casorio has introduced legislation in the state House of Representatives calling on Congress to allow Pennsylvania counties to return to the use of mechanical lever voting machines. He said electronic machines -- particularly ones that do not produce a record of individual votes -- are especially susceptible to failure and fraud.

2. No, Pennsylvania DOES NOT want levers.

Be aware that the owner of the Tribune-Review is Richard Scaife and his paper often reflects his own views and agenda.

That said, in the past this paper has actually given us very decent coverage of news events and developments surrounding the unverifiable DREs used in 50 of our largest counties. Unfortunately this particular silly article is NOT news (the resolution it mentions was introduced months ago), is NOT what our state wants, and is NOT going anywhere.

4. sadly, PA's path is to ALL paperless computerized voting
Strategy wise, keeping the levers is a smart move.

PA has missed the boat - spent HAVA money on paperless machines.
PA has the deck stacked against paper thanks to an in state national anti paper computer "expert" and activists groups that disagreed on goals.
AND PA's got anti paper election officials.

So now, the HAVA money - isn't it all gone?

So which argument can PA win?

Which argument has the greatest chance of winning?
Which limits the damage to elections?

KEEPING THE LEVERS BUYS YOU TIME:
Time until either one of the 2 activist groups exits the scene, or until they unite in message,
Time until Shamos exits, the SOS is replaced by a pro paper SOS, or
Time until federal legislation passes (don't count on it).

Without a united front, the paperless advocates won.

It would be easier to win the argument to keep the levers - those that are still there,
unless federal legislation passes,or some other miracle occurs, forcing the hands of PA SOS etc.

5. AS I SAID, the levers DO NOT EXIST anymore. They have ALL been sold and destroyed for scrap.
Edited on Tue Aug-04-09 12:49 PM by demodonkey

Continued discussion of this only makes us all look really foolish.

I will not respond further on this board to your post other than to publicly say that your knowledge of the goings-on in my state (and perhaps others?) is just not as good as you think it.

Check your PMs.

8. If folks don't know what is happening in PA (except for news articles) is anyone writing about it?
Only source of info about PA voting is what I find in the news articles.

Are there any activists organizations who regularly write about PA or blog about PA?

If so, please send me a link to it and it can be in the news.

There is no news if NO ONE writes it.

9. Instead of PM'ing me, how about posting articles about PA voting issues?
Edited on Wed Aug-05-09 10:51 AM by WillYourVoteBCounted
you are a good writer.

Someone has to do it.

Otherwise, like I said in other post, the only news we get about PA comes from those
who generate it, like the lawmakers pushing for return to levers rather than use DREs.

6. Hmmph. Why doesn't Galveston just outlaw voting altogether,
eliminate its county board of elections, and ask their voting machine provider who wins each race. It would be more up front, and think of the money they'd save.
