Chaotic polling problems lead to calls for e-voting (BBC)

Voting electronically could prevent future problems at election polling stations, some experts claim.

The US is planning to introduce e-voting and India has already had it in place for some time.

However the British Electorial Commission has expressed concerns about the security of such systems.

The 2010 UK election was marred for those unable to vote within the designated time frame, due to long queues.

OH BLOODY HELL ... now they're starting in the UK ... and using the USA debacle as a **precedent** (of the WRONG sort).

2. it seems to be even weirder than that

Clearly internet voting is part of it -- and I guess one way to abolish long lines at polling places is to abolish polling places. :eyes: But the story also talks about "electronic voting machines." That's likely to make lines longer, not shorter, because it introduces another potentially scarce resource.

The article offers multiple facepalms of various kinds. You have to feel for the voter who is quoted as saying,

Sometimes I feel nervous about using the internet, but I would hope those introducing such a system would take care of the risk of fraud.

Not likely if they agree with Andy Williamson of the Hansard Society that "'a lack of desire to change' is a better explanation of any resistance to electronic voting than security concerns."

3. The author's journalism teacher should be embarrassed.

How does this guy conflate FL2000 with this election? He even brings up "chads". Next, what would electronic voting do...short of a paper-less touchscreen...to avoid such a mess. Perhaps he's pitching used ones. They've got a few of those now.

4. Yes, I think the UK could pick up quite a few out-of-service NEDAP machines lying around Europe...

...and the NEDAP is SUCH a good machine, lol.

And then, with a little realistic strategy and some hard work on this side of the pond we could have 18 states' worth of assorted paperless DREs ready to send them. Oh wait I forgot we need to keep our paperless touchscreens until their screens turn to mush because we have to wait for the perfect law and the perfect voting system to replace them. ;-)

Anyway we all know how good paperless touchscreens are at avoiding messes. Out of sight, out of mind.
