Full 1984 Grand Jury Report Undermines Threat Of Voter Impersonation
Full 1984 Grand Jury Report Undermines Threat Of Voter Impersonation
Ryan J. Reilly | June 24, 2011, 10:40AM

An election law expert who is writing a book on the political wars over voting rights has ended his search for a report on a 1984 court case that involves the only known case of voter impersonation in the past several decades. The document appears to undermine the arguments of those who support tighter controls on voter ID laws.

The grand jury report lays out a scheme involving elections officials -- which couldn't have been prevented with voter ID laws.

Bush administration official Hans von Spakovsky, who cited the grand jury documentin a report he wrote on voter ID, did not respond to law professor Rick Hasen's request for his supporting material. But researchers at Hasen's law school were able to get a copy from the Brooklyn District Attorney's office. Hasen wants to know why von Spakovsky didn't turn it over to begin with.

"Perhaps the reason is that the way in which the fraud was done almost certainly could not happen today, thanks to basic safeguards put in place by election officials (such as checking the names and addresses of new registrants and ensuring greater security of voter registration materials)," Hasen writes. "And of course when election officials collude with those committing fraud, a voter i.d. requirement would not help in the slightest."

It's so obvious that these Voter ID laws being pushed by the GOP are nothing more than a way to suppress the Democratic vote for political reasons so why isn't the DoJ putting a stop toit?

2. Thanx for posting this
A friend from Pennsylvania just sent me an outraged email about that state's recent move to pass a voter ID requirement. I'm sure he'll like to see this.

3. No suprise but thanks for confirmation
this is standard operating procedure nowadays. They seem to be running an all out assault on democracy. this could spur a lot of people to action; but if it doesn't we could be in even worse trouble than we already are since then they will succeed.

4. Sure these laws couldn't have stopped the only known case
but then "Megan's Law" wouldn't have saved Megan Kanka either.

But once you have someone with an emotional-based law, especially if they have ulterior motives, truth will never stop them.
