(BLACK PR WIRE) A popular saying claims that everyone has a book inside waiting to be written. Whether or not that is true, a book is just words on paper unless there is a reader to be impacted and give that work meaning. October is National Book Month, an event organized by the National Book Foundation. The foundation organizers are concerned that literary reading is on the decline in our society, particularly among young adults.
It may seem that books are less important in an era where people say, “I’ll wait for the movie version.” Ironically, so many great films would never have been made without the books they were based on. From “The Color Purple” and “Waiting to Exhale,” both based on fiction, to “The Pursuit of Happyness,” based on an autobiography, great films often follow the lead of great books.
One person determined to revitalize the popularity of reading is Charles Cush, founder of publishing company Joy Love Books. “I saw a void in the marketplace for books relating to African American children,” says Cush, who named Joy Love Books after Joy and Love, the middle names of his two daughters.
Cush himself authored "From Acorns to Oak Trees," Joy Love Books’ debut title. The book depicts a young African American girl and an acorn growing up side by side. The girl learns that just as a tiny acorn eventually grows into a giant oak tree, she too can grow up to be anything, even the president of the United States.
Cush states that the objectives of Joy Love Books go beyond promoting reading skills. “There are two primary goals with these books. One is to encourage children to read more and the other is to encourage parents to spend more bonding time with their children.” Joy Love Books has more titles planned for future release, including a boys’ version of "From Acorns to Oak Trees."
Like most lifetime habits, it is best if reading appreciation develops early in childhood. However, it is never too late for adults to grow in this area. Maybe everyone doesn’t have a book to write, but all of us have books waiting to be read.
