NOTHING TO LOSE - Lee Child
I'm on page 94 (407 pp) and find myself getting annoyed because I can't get into caring about the main character, Jack Reacher, or any of the characters for that matter. I'll give it another 25 pages and then put it away for something more exciting or satisfying.

Sometimes the storyline is a bit thin, but if I like the characters, I stick with it. This storyline so far is not worth hurrying to get back to the book. I've read ten of Child's previous books and enjoyed several of them, but this one....

Maybe it'll pick up...

1. Those novels scare me
They're pretty well written, but Jack Reacher is a psychopath. I can't relate to the guy at all.

2. The Author, Lee Child, Came Through Denver Recently.

We went to the local bookstore and heard him speak; he was absolutely charming. He spoke of how he came up with the Reacher charcter, saying that he got tired of all the heroes in mysteries carrying around so many soap opera burdens, and he decided to create a character with a stripped down, no-bullshit existence. When asked who could portray Reacher in a movie, Child said the only guy he thought might be dead solid perfect is some English ex-soccer star (can't remember the fella's name, sorry). One other thing---before he started writing, Child was an executive with the old Granada television network, back when Granada turned out such classic series as "Jewel In The Crown."

Hey, the books aren't up there with Raymond Chandler or Dennis Lehane, but they're really entertaining. We got an autographed copy of "Nothing To Lose" and enjoyed reading it....

3. I got thru about 100 pages
If I had to read any more descriptions of the road and their directions and their spurs and descriptions of the complex I would have screamed.

Too much description, not enough action. I'd about had it after the sheriff lent him a car without asking if he had a license, and especially when the military police asked for car registration but didn't ask to see his license. That was really fiction.

I peaked ahead to see what the ending was about and thoroughly lost interet.

I really enjoyed the previous books, especially how he got started when he left the military, how he got left an expensive home that was bequeathed to him, etc.

4. Speaking of Denver....
You'll be very busy in August - the Dem convention AND, of all things, the UFO thingy led by Jeff Peckman. I see where they are going to try to get the Dems to do something or other about the ufo thingy.

Everyone will have fun.
