This is one of MANY 'after the apocalypse' SF novels I've read, and as you know, with music/books/movies, sometimes the best stuff doesn't sell well and vice-versa. This book has long been out of print - came out in 1993, I believe (link to the Wik. page on the author below) - but you can probably find a copy if you troll a few used bookstores.
The reason I'm posting this is that I figure a number of you DU book-readin' people also like some near-future SF stuff where authoritarian govts. have taken over (yeah, like the Bush admin. :^ ) - like 'Handmaid's Tale', '1984', and many others, but you probably haven't heard of this one.
It's about a near or somewhat-near future CA that is run by a bunch of nutty authoritarian, rigid, paranoid fundamentalist types (or did I just repeat myself a lot?) who have literally built a wall around maybe the southern 2/3 of CA today, and they've told the populace that there is literally no one alive outside of their land (I forget what type of holocaust(s) allegedly happened to bring about the current state). People are told what to do, how to live, etc., but in addition, everyone is telepathic, so you can't even hide your thoughts. However, this ability doesn't manifest itself until you're around 16 or so. If you get much older, and you don't develop this ability, well then, darn it, the powers that be just have to 'cleanse' you, which uh, means being hung... because after all, you might have dangerous thoughts to yourself, and the Body or whatever the population is called just can't have that! :^)
I won't give away any more... but anyway, just thought someone might be interested.
