Tony Hillerman is dead - RIP

One of my favorite mystery writers, and writers in general.



I will sorely miss Leaphorn and Chee. :cry:

5. New reader here for Hillerman

I want to start the Hillerman series - where's a good place to start?

Try James D. Doss - all the cover reviews of his books compare him to Hillerman, that's why I want to try Hillerman. I'd like to meet Leaphorn and Chee, and you should become acquainted with Moon and Parris and Daisy.

9. I started with Dance Hall of the Dead

It's an early one, but it has one of the most original ways of dealing with an otherwise untouchable bad guy that I've ever seen.

10. I just finished SACRED CLOWNS and THE FALLEN MAN

I requested DANCE HALL OF THE DEAD and THE BLESSING WAY and should pick them up tomorrow.

I don't know how much I'll enjoy Blessing, it's 1977 and a paperback. I'm spoiled by hardcovers.

Something that helps is finding a map of the Navajo nation on the internet. Looking at the places like Shiprock and Aztec, and Window Rock helps follow the story. I'm going to read Blessings because it will give me a better understanding of the culture and ceremonies.

Oh, the serials don't interlock very much. In SACRED CLOWNS, widower Leaphorn was a police lt. in love with some Louisa Bourne...whatever, and the next book in the series, THE FALLEN MAN, he's retired and the woman is never mentioned...

I like the characters..
