The character Charles Strickland is such a complete asshole I would probably cheer the narrator if he murdered Strickland.
I know he's based on Paul Gauguin, but if Gauguin was like that in RL he was an "odious man," as the narrator said of Strickland.
I know geniuses in whatever field are sometimes difficult if not impossible to live with. I guess I can thank Maugham for reminding me of that.
