James Lee Burke movie coming out
Edited on Wed Feb-25-09 02:55 PM by MaineDem
Tommy Lee Jones will play Dave Robicheaux. I haven't read the book it's based on, "In the Electric Mist with Confederate Dead". Is it an early one?

Was it a direct to DVD movie or did I miss it in theaters?

Here's the link at IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0910905/

1. Thanks for that info
Electric Mist is one of his earlier books and I think the movie will be a new release. Alec Baldwin played Robi-chocks in a movie several years ago - Heaven's Prisoners. Tommy Lee Jones will be a great Dave. James will have a new book this summer but its not a Dave and Clete book. I've read every Burke book but one and I have that one on my bookshelf waiting to be devoured.

2. Chief: If I were to start with the Robichaux series which would you recommend?
Edited on Wed Feb-25-09 11:26 PM by Richardo
I was at B&N the other day looking at the JLBurkes (based on your recs I might add) and could not figure out which one to get.

Read them chronologically?

3. Neon Rain
would be a good starting point. Even though the books are a chronology of the life and times of Dave, each one is self-contained. He's a great character but I think his demons seemed more intense in his younger years. And reading Burke sometimes turns into a poetry bee. Amidst the murder and the mayhem his writing is sometimes downright lyrical.

I hope you enjoy and thanks for asking.

5. I'm going through
some old WEB Griffin series books and have been reading some old Vince Flynn. He's kinda right wingish but he does spin a good action yarn. Connelly is awesome. I'm meandering to my favorite musty old used bookstore tomorrow. A veritable candy store for me. And about 20 miles south of us a new Super B&N is under construction. Hope you enjoy Dave and his sidekick Cletus.

6. You got me hooked on Dave and Cletus
I've only been reading them for the past few novels. Love 'em.

I just got my first WEB Griffin book and I've read all of Vince Flynn's. I like David Baldacci, too.

7. I'm very happy you liked Burke's work
Now you should come down to New Orleans and New Iberia and see where they stir up all the mayhem. There are many great bookstores in the quarter including one in Faulkner's old living spaces right near St Louis Cathedral.

I read Griffin's series on Philly cops; now I'm starting his work on "Men at War."

8. I was in NO 6 months after Katrina
I worked with America's Harvest and some other food banks. Walked through the Quarter and spend some time with a small shop owner on Chartres St. I was the only one in the store. Hell, I was practically the only one on the street. We ended up crying together over the mess in the city. I found that with almost everyone I met. Shopkeepers, hotel workers, wait staffs. I fell in love with the city and can't wait to go back.

Of course I'll have to get over to New Iberia. I'm dying to see the Bayou.

9. Things
have come way back. NOLA just had the largest mardi gras in years and I always chat with the business folks and most are doing very well except for the Antique folks on Royal Street. The high ticket items aren't moving very well. New Iberia is a dumpy little town. Yet charming and Bayou Teche is very picturesque.

And God Bless You and thank you for your efforts down this way.

17. The Last Rebus
"Exit Music" is supposed to be the last Rebus book. Hopefully, he'll bring John back. Or maybe he's tired of the character and wants to move onto something else.

Andrew Vachss' "Another Life" is supposed to end the Burke series.

16. Please go to James D. Doss next
Edited on Tue Mar-10-09 08:25 PM by fadedrose
Get the first two novels and you'll be hooked. The first one is good, but not really representative of the following books as it has little but some humor. The others have at least one scene where you will cry with laughter..

Here's a link showing all his books:

10. It's about as close to straight to DVD as you can get: I think it opened
on very limited screens last week and goes to DVD this week. As near as I can figure out without having seen the film, it sticks very closely to the book and early viewers couldn't handle the convoluted story and the atmospherics. I also saw a review complaining that the lead character is an alcoholic! Talk about missing the point!

18. I saw the movie today
I liked it because I like Dave. But the story was a bit disjointed. Not nearly as good as the book. Few movies ever are.

But if you're a fan of the book series you'll notice a lot of discrepancies. Alafair was a young girl and they were talking about the aftermaths of Katrina, for example. This book was written long before Katrina struck.

20. No Clete and that disappointed me.
I didn't read the book. Was he in it?

Of course, I have my idea of what Clete looks like. And I listen to the audiobooks so I have his voice in my head already.

There's a new book out this summer.

21. Was he even in the book?
I thought that one skipped him, since it stayed mostly out of New Orleans.
