DANGEROUS GROUND by Larry Bond
Edited on Fri Apr-17-09 09:09 PM by fadedrose
I really really liked this book. Didn't understand the technical language, but there were plenty of relationships that made the book so good, plus the kind of high tension (near the end) that brought back memories of "Destination Tokyo," but without the sentimentality.

Something I never heard of: King Boreas initiates a blue-nose ceremony for warm bodies (people who never crossed the Arctic circle) - very interesting and fun to read - I wonder if this is a true part..

His next one (about Jerry Mitchell, LT-USN) was just released a few days ago and I intend to read it as well as his other stuff.

Here's a listing of all his stuff:

2. Yes, all on a sub
It's not easy to do a peacetime exciting sub story, but Bond managed to do it..

3. Wow! I'll pass the word. Thanks. I've been curious about this writer.
The vast majority of military fiction stinks, so I don't often read it.

5. His 2nd book, "Vortex", I've read a brazillion times
It's about conflict in South Africa. US gets involved, turns pretty messy.

He's not bad, although I never felt compelled to explore him past "Vortex" and "Red Phoenix".

James H. Cobb writes some seriously good stuff. "Choosers of the Slain" and "Sea Fighters" were both excellent books. I've be looking for those to re-read.

6. COLD CHOICES - sequel
Just finished COLD CHOICES and it's about subs too...

a sub rescue - some of the same characters as in DANGEROUS GROUND. If you liked the first book, you'll like the 2nd too. I enjoyed both.

4. Bond is a great writer. I used to read all his stuff, but missed a couple for some reason.
And yes, the "blue-nose" ceremony is a real thing. :)

He goes way back, and he's like Tom Clancy with talent (Bond can actually write characters. What does Clancy come up with? A character named Arnold Van Damm). Bond was one of the main developers of the Harpoon series of PC games as well. The guy knows his shit.
