Has anyone read "An Instance of the Fingerpost" by Iain Pears?
I just finished it, as part of a set of readings for "Liberty and Tyranny in 17th-Century England." I really enjoyed it, and wonder if anyone else did.

1. Yes, several years ago. I recall that I liked it very much, but not the specifics. n/t

2. I just started it. About 75 pages in. Still a long way to go.
Have you read any of his other books? I have a link here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=208x17250

What were your impressions of Fingerpost, without giving away any spoilers? :hi:

3. It was a really fun read
Pears had excellent control of the narrative voices throughout the book. Very well done.

4. One of my favorite books
I loved the way the "truth" kept changing with each new narrator, as well as the ironic portrayals of 17th century England.

5. That book has the distinction of being a novel I've tried (and failed) to read more than twice.
Three times and then I gave up. Couldn't get past the first twenty pages without fogging out. I don't usually drop books cold, but I simply couldn't get into that one.

6. That's the way it goes with reading...
I found it difficult to put down, but I am just finishing a couple of semesters dealing with England during the 17th-Century, so I was kinda into it. :hi:

8. And it DOES help a lot to be familiar with European history
Otherwise, you wouldn't understand a lot of the characters' motivations.

9. Quite true...
I understood the whole patronage concept, but it really came to life in the book.
