2. The sixth, and last, book of Maurice Druon's "Accursed Kings" series (13th-14C
France). The series has been out of print for years, but I've been able to track down all six books in used bookstores and on Amazon. The last one just came from Amazon yesterday. Druon died this April, so maybe his works will be reprinted, which would be ironic, after what I've gone through (and paid) to get them all!

7. Little Pink House by Jeff Benedict
It's the true story of a nurse who fought against eminent domain and the taking of private property by the government for economic development, all the way to the US Supreme Court.

Slow as I read it'll take me a month to finish it.

8. Reclaiming Religion from the Church by Frank Canatella
It is reframing of morality as a survival mechanism, that grows organically from human experience. The emphasis is on surviving together, and the divisive morality handed down from the church is debunked. The author's goal is an all-inclusive humanist morality that he feels that we are poised to evolve consciously, beginning with individual relationships and spreading.

I should point out that I knew the author before he passed away in 2007. I'm not trying to sell the book here. It is the honest answer to "what are you reading?"

11. Netherland by Jos. O'Neill
Edited on Mon May-11-09 10:26 PM by pscot
The Prez was reading it last month. Seemed like a pretty strong recommendation. Though I have to admit, I never did get around to My Pet Goat. I just finished the Archimedes Codex,, by Netz and Noel. It's the best thing I've read this year. You may have seen the documentary on PBS, but that didn't even begin to tell the story.

12. someday this pain will be useful to you
by Peter Cameron.

Actually, I finished it tonight. I was obsessively protective of James, who was myself, my children, and some of my students, as well. I had to travel alongside him to the last page.

13. Comprehending Columbine - Ralph Larkin.
So far, it looks like the book will put a lot of the responsibility for what happened on the culture at the school, although it does also give graphic descriptions of what happened which limits any sympathy for Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris.

14. Just re-read Kerouac's "On The Road"
Been listening to a lot of late 40s and early 50s jazz and thought I'd go back to see if it was as good as I remembered. It was. :wow:

Now about to re-read Ralph Ellison's "Invisible Man".

15. GREASING THE PINATA, Tim Maleeny
It's the 3rd book (2008) about Cape Weathers, San Francisco detective; the book got the "2009 Lefty Award for Most Humorous Mystery."

It's okay, but I didn't have any big laughs, just some smiles here and there. He's a fairly new author.

21. "Woodsburner" Debut novel by John Pipkin.
I am half-way through and it is really really good.

http://www.amazon.com/Woodsburner-Novel-John-Pipkin/dp/0385528655/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242415444&sr=8-1

This is one of those rare books that combines compelling storytelling with details to delight intellectual snobs like me.
